Summary
A three-piece carbonized-bamboo prep and serving set — 15 × 10, 12 × 8 and 9 × 6 inches — with beveled side handholds and perimeter juice grooves. These boards are hand wash only, and owner reports of splintering straight out of the wrapper mean you should inspect every face before the first meal.
Strengths
- Three coordinated sizes cover a lemon, vegetable prep and serving, instead of one thick slab.
- Grooves and beveled grips reduce mess when cutting juicy produce or presenting a cheese tray.
- The carbonized-brown finish looks distinct from pale bamboo; both faces work if kept clean.
- The maker publishes care instructions and a one-year warranty with a written claim path.
- Bamboo resists water uptake and scarring better than some unfinished blocks, if hand washed promptly.
Weaknesses
- Owner reports describe visible splinters right after unwrapping and worsening after a first wash.
- A December 2025 Walmart purchaser reported glue joints splitting after about 12 uses despite hand washing and never a dishwasher.
- Hand wash only; a dishwasher can split the lamination and voids the warranty.
- Juice grooves collect runoff and minced food and need brushing, not just a wipe.
- Bamboo is hard on fine knife edges compared with softer woods.
- Country of origin and the exact food-contact coating are not documented for the brown set.
Verified specifications
| Product | ROYAL CRAFT WOOD Cutting Board Set of 3, Bamboo, Brown; carbonized bamboo, a heat-and-colour treatment, not solid walnut or maple. |
|---|---|
| Sizes | large 15 × 10 in, medium 12 × 8 in, small 9 × 6 in. Nominal one-face areas are 150, 96 and 54 sq in, 300 sq in combined across three separate pieces. |
| Thickness | 0.6 in on the large board. The brown set weighs 4.11 lb; the natural set lists 4.34 lb. |
| Features | beveled side handles and perimeter juice grooves; both faces are usable if clean, undamaged and sanitized. |
| Finish | the maker describes a protective coating against scratches and stains; one Target listing calls it a resin lacquer top coat. |
| Care | hand wash only — mild soap, warm water, dry promptly, stand upright so both faces air-dry; oil with food-grade mineral oil before first use and about monthly. |
| Knife suitability | the maker calls it knife-safe, but bamboo is hard and knife specialists warn it can dull fine edges faster than maple, walnut or hinoki. |
| Included | three bamboo boards only — no oil, applicator, storage rack, nonslip feet or sharpener. |
| Food safety | USDA advises separate boards for raw meat and ready-to-eat food, washing after use, and discarding a deeply grooved board that is hard to clean. |
| Warranty | one-year limited manufacturer defect warranty requiring an order ID and photos; dishwasher, humidity extremes, modification and commercial use are excluded. |
| Returns | 30-day unused return with a free prepaid US label on direct orders. |

Splinters, splitting and what to inspect
Separately, a December 18, 2025 verified Walmart purchaser of item 2649648213 said the adhesive joints split after about 12 uses, and specifically that the boards were hand washed and never put in a dishwasher. No factory repair data, failure rate or independent lab test exists for this set, so treat these as real possibilities rather than a percentage. Visible fibers in food are a reason to stop, photograph the defect close up and request a replacement instead of serving food with splinters. The Target listing’s handful of ratings skew negative, so read the current reviews and the retailer’s return terms for the listing you buy from.
Before first use, examine all six main faces, the grooves, handles, laminated seams and edges in raking light; rub a cool, dry surface with a clean fingertip for raised fibers; and set each board on a flat counter to check for rocking. Photograph any flaw before oiling.
Cleaning, oiling and running costs
There is no electricity, subscription or filter cost. Wash each board with mild soap and warm water, dry it promptly and stand it upright so both faces ventilate. The maker says to oil with food-grade mineral oil before first use and about monthly, about 3 to 4 teaspoons (roughly 15 to 20 mL) for a typical board, left to absorb for about 25 minutes and then wiped. Oiling does not disinfect; follow USDA cleaning and sanitizing advice separately.
Budget illustration, not a measured absorption rate: 15 mL per board each month across three boards is 45 mL a session, 540 mL a year, about 1.8 bottles of the maker’s 300 mL oil at $16.97 — an allocated $30.55 a year, or $33.94 for two bottles. A thinner 5 mL per board each month is 180 mL a year, about $10.18. The maker’s oil and wax applicator is a one-time $15.97; a lint-free cloth does the same job. Over a hypothetical three years the $50.91 brown set allocates about $16.97 a year, while the $21.97 marketplace set allocates about $7.32 a year, though that cheap listing is not confirmed as the carbonized-brown set.
Knife edges and food safety
Bamboo is a hard, silica-bearing material. Knife specialists interviewed by Serious Eats and Epicurious warn it can dull or microchip fine, polished edges more than softer maple, walnut or hinoki, though neither article measured this exact Royal Craft set. For a serving platter that gets light knife contact that matters less; as a primary vegetable board for good knives it is a compromise.
On food safety, the manufacturer’s antimicrobial wording does not replace basic practice. USDA says to keep separate boards for raw meat, poultry and seafood versus ready-to-eat produce and bread, wash after use, sanitize where appropriate, and discard a deeply grooved board that is hard to clean. Deep juice grooves can trap particles, and oiling wood does not make bacteria disappear.
Is it worth it?
Royal Craft Wood lists the brown set at $50.91 and the natural set at $40.97, a $9.94 gap (Royal Craft Wood, October 2026). The brown page also shows a back-in-stock form, so stock is ambiguous and immediate dispatch is not promised. Marketplace pricing is all over the map: Target TCIN 89843714 at $39.99 from seller Argo Brands, Target’s Premium listing at $21.97, and Walmart item 2649648213 at $16.90 from seller MarketNova, while Walmart item 695096359 sat at $24.97 out of stock. Those cheap listings often turn out to be the natural set or a third-party variant — the $39.99 Target set carries UPC 850009397027, which matches the natural set, not the brown one — so verify the selected colour, the seller and the return terms. A single 15 × 10 board from Royal Craft Wood is $18.87 if one grooved board is enough.
Against this, the Home Depot Elama three-piece set is $35.30, and Target’s larger Totally Bamboo three-piece set is $49.99. The buy bands that fall out of these offers: under $22 for a genuine brown set with warranty is outstanding, $22 to $29 is good, $30 to $38 is reasonable if the finish and seller check out, $39 to $45 makes sense only if the brown look matters, and $46 to $55 — the maker’s own figure — is poor value next to the natural set or the larger alternatives. Above $55, pick a better-designed larger hardwood or a washable nonslip board.
Which model this is
This page covers the ROYAL CRAFT WOOD Cutting Board Set of 3, Bamboo, Brown, a three-piece carbonized-bamboo set. The record has no GTIN, UPC or MPN for the brown SKU; the natural three-piece set carries UPC 850009397027. Do not confuse the brown set with the natural set, the separately sold single boards, or the Premium three-piece sets, which are different listings with different sellers.
