Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A budget 65% mechanical keyboard with tri-mode wireless, hot-swap sockets and RGB lighting. Check which variant you are buying: the Pro uses Outemu red linear switches, while the Pro SE ships different custom switches.

Strengths

  • Fast 2.4 GHz latency reported as suitable for gaming.
  • Hot-swap 3-pin and 5-pin sockets allow switch swaps without soldering.
  • Bright RGB with 20 presets and on-board controls.
  • Compact 65% layout keeps dedicated arrow keys.
  • Review-era listings ran $51.99 to $60 for the Pro.

Weaknesses

  • Thin plastic case flexes and creaks; no metal backplate or dampening foam.
  • Outemu switches have side-to-side wobble; stabilizers are inconsistent.
  • Software is limited (3 profiles, no sleep timer) and detects the board only over a wired connection.
  • Auto-sleep after 2 minutes in wireless mode, with no setting to change it.
  • Firmware and software mismatch can brick the keyboard; Redragon publishes recovery steps.

Battery life

Redragon rates the battery at 120 h with RGB off and 30 h with RGB on. One owner measured about 115 h off and 26-27 h on. The 1600 mAh pack recharges over USB-C with a red/green indicator, and the board auto-sleeps after 2 minutes in wireless mode with no option to change that. Charging before deep discharge and keeping the USB-C port clean is the only maintenance the manual calls for.

Build and typing feel

The case is thin translucent plastic with no metal backplate and no interior foam, so it flexes and creaks and bottom-out is harsh. Switches show side-to-side wobble, and stabilizers are inconsistent, with the shift key feeling softer than the spacebar. Keycaps are ABS, double-shot, shine-through, in OEM profile. Modders report successful switch swaps (Akko CS Cream Yellow) plus lubing and foam mods, and one owner rated the K631 better built with better stabilizers than the K530, with stock reds feeling better than browns. High Ground Gaming scored build quality 75%, performance 90%, features 70%, value 85%, overall 4.0.

Software and firmware

The Redragon “Castor” software handles remapping, macros, lighting and profiles, but only detects the keyboard over a wired connection; 2.4 GHz wireless is not detected. A firmware and software mismatch can brick the board, and Redragon published a recovery guide. One Reddit thread reports a TS68 firmware misflash making a K631 register as a different model. One owner reported a board that would not recharge and had wired-mode issues.

Repairs and warranty

The manual states an 18-month repair guarantee for failures due to electrical circuit problems, excluding disassembly, hard impacts, water, improper voltage and natural disasters. No published parts or repair channel for the K631 was found; repairability is limited to switch and keycap replacement through the hot-swap socket. Standard keyboard care applies beyond that.

Is it worth it?

At $55 or less, the board is strong value: tri-mode connectivity plus hot-swap at a low price, if you accept the flex and short battery. From $56 to $70 it is fair, and Royal Kludge RK68-class boards become the comparison. From $71 to $90 it is weak to fair, mainly the Pro SE with its custom switches and colorways. Above $90 it is generally weak against better-built or longer-battery alternatives unless the translucent look or the Redragon ecosystem is specifically wanted. The main value differentiator is tri-mode connectivity plus hot-swap, not switch quality or build. Review-era prices: the manufacturer page listed $54.99 sale and $67.99 regular with a sold-out, EU-only shipping note at fetch time; High Ground Gaming listed $51.99 in June 2023; Funky Kit listed $59; Seer of Souls listed $71.98 for the Pro SE; The Gaming Setup listed $60 for the Pro SE; and a Funky Kit listing showed $55 to $89.

Which model this is

This page covers the K631 family; the researched variant is the Pro wireless board: 68 keys, tri-mode, Outemu red switches. The wired-only Castor (no wireless) and the K631 Pro SE (custom quiet linear switches, box stem, 1.8 mm travel, 37 g actuation) are different variants despite the shared family name, and listings sometimes label both “red switches”, so confirm the variant before buying. The manufacturer page’s single “Connectivity: USB-C” line is incomplete; the board also has Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz. Revisions are reported by owners and modders (foam sometimes present, sometimes not; the SE adds clear-housing switches), but Redragon has not documented a mechanical revision.
