Summary
A Wi-Fi pellet grill and smoker with about 1,665 square inches of cooking space over three levels and a 40 lb hopper, built for backyard cooks who feed a crowd. Check your patio and your power before you buy: the grill weighs 218 lb assembled, needs 18 in of clearance behind, on both sides and above, and needs a GFCI outlet.
Strengths
- Heat is steady where it counts: WIRED’s cook saw no more than a 7°F spread between the center and edge of the middle grate.
- Smoke is strong below 250°F; WIRED found heavier smoke rings at 225°F than from a Traeger Woodridge Pro used for comparison.
- The 40 lb hopper and three-level chamber handle long cooks for a crowd without constant auger attention.
- The front knob sets the temperature, so a Wi-Fi outage does not stop the cook.
- Stainless grates and firepot plus a cast-iron deflector wear better than thin painted steel.
- Six years of residential warranty on defects in material and workmanship.
Weaknesses
- 218 lb with a high lid and bullhorn handles; the manual calls for two people to raise the body.
- Grease drains into two buckets, and WIRED found keeping both of them clean is a chore.
- Smoke fades above 500°F, where the grill turns into a convection oven that burns pellets faster.
- One owner measured the grate 50–70°F above what the display showed.
- Another owner reported flames reaching the pellets in the hopper after a cook above 500°F.
- Wi-Fi pairing fails on some networks, and the app has sent preheat alerts when the grill was not heating.

Heat, smoke and the app
WIRED cooked on the Flagship 1600 in March 2026 and measured no more than a 7°F difference between the center and the outer edge of the middle grate. That is one cooker’s measurement, not a certified evenness spec for every shelf at every temperature. Smoke is the stronger argument: WIRED found more pronounced smoke and heavier smoke rings at 225°F than from a Traeger Woodridge Pro the same tester used for comparison, and liked the results on pork belly, chicken and salmon.
Above 500°F the grill stops behaving like a smoker. It works as a convection oven, burns pellets faster and needs more grease management. Heat zones exist: an owner in May 2026 described a hot patch at the front-right corner, while WIRED measured even temperatures on the middle shelf of a different cook.
The app is optional, and that matters. The front knob sets the target temperature, so you can cook without Wi-Fi and without notifications. Pairing is the weak part: an October 2025 owner had to turn off all but one 2.4GHz access point and pair from a tablet, and owners in March 2026 still struggled on dedicated 2.4GHz networks. The notifications are worse than the setup. WIRED saw push messages saying the grill was preheating to 400°F when it was not. Check the display before you trust the phone.
A new owner reported reaching 425°F while set to 400°F on the first burn-in. Other owners said an overshoot while heating up may settle after preheat, and nobody has measured how long that takes.
Safety, clearances and first burn-in
This grill is for outdoors. The manual asks for 18 in of clearance from combustible construction at the back, both sides and above, no combustible overhang, level ground and a noncombustible surface. It runs on 110V and needs a working GFCI outlet. The body weighs 218 lb, and the manual explicitly asks for a second person at the step where you raise it.
The first cook is a burn-in, not dinner. Wash the grates, fill the hopper at least halfway, drop a quarter cup of pellets into the firepot for that first setup only, and hold 400°F for one hour after you reach it. Routine lighting does not involve filling the firepot by hand; the two instructions cover different stages.
Grease is the fire risk that catches people out. The manual is unusually blunt about it: after a long greasy low-and-slow, clean the grease residues off before the next cook, especially above 350°F, because accumulated grease can ignite. The warranty excludes damage that follows from improper cleaning and maintenance. Clean the firepot every 3–5 cooks or 16 cooking hours, inspect the smokestack, wipe the grates after every use, keep pellets dry (wet pellets swell and clog the auger) and empty the hopper after six weeks or more without use.
If flames do reach the hopper, get people away and call the local emergency services. Do not reach into a hot hopper, do not pull burning pellets out of a hot auger and do not use a diagnostic mode as a fire response.
Running costs, parts and upkeep
Fuel is the real running cost. The advertised figure is 40 lb for up to 40 hours, which works out to roughly 1 lb an hour in favorable conditions. High heat, cold weather, frequent lid opening and the pellet species all push the rate up, and nobody has published an independent burn curve for this exact grill, so treat the 40-hour claim as a best case.
Bag costs differ a lot. A 40 lb bag of recteq Ultimate Blend pellets is $34.99 ($0.875 a pound) at recteq in October 2026, a 40 lb bag of Pit Boss Competition pellets is $14.97 at Walmart in October 2026 ($0.374 a pound), and the Tractor Supply store-brand 40 lb BBQ Blend bag was $12.99 in October 2026 ($0.325 a pound).
Run the math yourself on that 1 lb an hour rate. Fifty cooking hours a year is 50 lb of pellets: about $43.74 with recteq pellets, $18.71 with Pit Boss and $16.24 with Tractor Supply. A hundred hours a year is 100 lb, or roughly $87.48, $37.43 and $32.48 respectively. Those are illustrations built on the advertised rate, not measured annual bills.
Electricity stays unquantified. The controller, auger motor, blower and igniter all need AC, but the factory materials list no running or ignition wattage and no independent kWh measurement turned up, so any annual figure would be invented.
The consumables are modest. recteq bucket liners for Flagship buckets start at $7.99 for a five pack, and with two buckets you can go through two liners per service. Disposable drip pan liners come in large sizes in 5- and 10-packs with family pricing of $17.99 to $29.99, though the exact large pack for this model was not confirmed. Heavy-duty aluminum foil over the drip pan works as long as the grease slope stays clear.
The parts you might need later are where it gets awkward. recteq quotes 100,000+ lighting cycles for the HotFlash ceramic igniter, but no confirmed part number, price or failure interval has surfaced for the RT-1600FS igniter, the RTD probe, the auger motor, the blower, the controller, the fuses or the two wired meat probes. The six-year warranty mostly replaces covered parts, so it can cost less than a paid repair. There is no external pellet dump either, so switching wood blends means burning the hopper down and vacuuming it once the grill is cold and unplugged. The optional Smokebox accessory adds three stainless secondary racks for cheese, fish and jerky at $299.99, and it is not part of the base grill.
Warranty, support and owner reports
The warranty is specific. The Flagship 1600 carries six years of limited residential coverage for defects in material and workmanship in normal use. The remedy is repair or replacement of covered parts after recteq examines the grill, not a free replacement grill. recteq excludes paint, grill covers and rust or corrosion for any reason, and it excludes commercial use, misuse, changes and improper installation or maintenance. Suspect parts have to go back freight prepaid, with shipping, labor and export duties on you. Keep the receipt, the model and serial number, the date and a description of the problem.
Support does not require a phone call. recteq lists support@recteq.com, live chat from 9am to 7pm ET on weekdays and 9am to 3pm ET on Saturdays, and a 24/7 online ticket form.
Owner experiences with support are mixed, and nobody has published a claims rate for this model. A September 2025 buyer said recteq honored a $250 discount after the order went in. An owner who bought the grill in May 2026 reported that support diagnosed an auger problem quickly. A July 2026 respondent had been waiting two weeks for meaningful help. Another July 2026 owner heard the auger creaking on a second cook, and a commenter said support found a fastener too tight on their unit. None of these is a representative sample, and a failure on one grill says nothing about the next one.
Is it worth it?
recteq lists the Flagship 1600 at $1,599.99 on its own store in October 2026, with estimated 1–2 week shipping and free shipping over $99 within the lower 48 states. Abt lists the same RT-1600FS at $1,599.99 in October 2026. An older official promotion of $1,349.99 ($250 off) was seen in March 2026; treat that as a temporary promotion rather than the everyday number.
$1,250–1,350 new from an authorized seller is strong value if you really need this much cooking room and have the outdoor space for it. $1,350–1,500 is reasonable for heavy entertaining. At $1,599.99 the six-year warranty and the sheer size are the main arguments, and above $1,650 without extras you are better off comparing the alternatives or waiting for an official bundle. Those are judgment calls, not transaction averages.
The alternatives are close. The recteq Backyard Beast 1200 is $1,199.99 and gives up some area (1,220 sq in against 1,665) but keeps the 180–700°F range and a 30 lb hopper. The Traeger Woodridge Pro is $1,149.99 for 970 sq in and is easier to set up and to clean; WIRED used both and still preferred the recteq’s heat distribution and smoke flavor. The Weber Searwood XL 600 was promoted to $1,199.00 from $1,299, tops out at 600°F and sears over direct flame.
This page covers the Flagship 1600, model RT-1600FS. Do not mix it with the Flagship 1100 or the Flagship XL 1400, and do not read the Backyard Beast 1200’s numbers into it.
