Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A split-chamber pellet grill with a small direct-heat side that recteq claims reaches 700°F and a much larger indirect smoker side, both fed by one 70 lb hopper. Check the direct side’s real estate and the front shelf (sold separately) before you buy.

Strengths

  • Two independently controlled chambers replace a smoker plus a sear grill in one footprint.
  • A 70 lb hopper and a 700°F direct side cover low-and-slow cooks and high-heat searing.
  • 304 stainless grates, firepot and drip pan, with a cast-iron heat deflector.
  • Cold start to 700°F averaged 13 minutes in the Outdoor Life field test.
  • Four meat probes and dual-band Wi-Fi to the recteq app, with onboard controls when the app is not wanted.
  • A 6-year warranty with US-based phone support.

Weaknesses

  • The direct side is small: recteq quotes 302 sq in and Outdoor Life measured about 247 sq in of usable grate.
  • The front folding shelf is optional and sold separately at this price.
  • One owner reported no rope gaskets, smoke leakage between chambers and an open hole on the direct side.
  • Forum reports describe auger-feed jams on both chambers and a few controller or power-supply failures on new units.
  • The inset, overhung LCD is hard to read from a normal standing height.
  • A 27 × 70 in footprint needs a permanent spot, and pellet choice matters to some owners.

Two chambers, one hopper

recteq positions the DualFire 1200 as the only all-wood-pellet grill with two separate chambers, in contrast to pellet/gas or pellet/charcoal hybrids. Each side has its own power button, knob and independent shutdown: the direct side is the high-heat searing chamber, the indirect side is the smoker. Both feed from one 70 lb hopper, and the app is optional — push-button start and knob controls work without Wi-Fi.

Cold start and temperature control

The best independent evidence is a two-month Outdoor Life field test. A cold start to 700°F averaged 13 minutes over three cooks. A 250°F brisket held within 5°F of set point through changing ambient conditions, and a 600°F fish cook held consistently at 600°F. Searing left distinct grill marks and strong Maillard browning on steaks and carne asada. The same tester flagged one quirk: raising the set point mid-cook from 425°F to 450°F produced a large plume of white smoke, so they stopped adjusting temperature mid-cook afterward. No instrumented lab test of this exact model was found.

Owner reports and reliability

Owner sentiment is broadly positive. The caution signals come from forums. A 2025 thread documents recurring auger-feed jams on both chambers that the owner cleared by tapping the auger tunnel, with recteq techs recommending loosening the auger-cover screws about 1–2 mm. One new owner reported smoke leaking between chambers, no rope gaskets and an open hole on the direct side. Two Reddit owners report controller or power-supply failures on near-new units. Wi-Fi dropouts after firmware updates appear across recteq forums generally. None of this supports a failure-rate estimate.

Running costs and maintenance

Expect to buy pellets and, if you want it, the front folding shelf. recteq’s manual estimates premium hardwood pellets at roughly 8,200 BTU/lb with under 1% ash, and warns against heating-grade softwood pellets and damp storage. One owner reported buying Costco pellets at $13.99 for 40 lb against roughly $35 from recteq. The optional cold-smoking attachment and pizza oven are owner-added extras.

Maintenance is straightforward. recteq’s manual recommends checking and cleaning the firepot regularly, using only dry premium hardwood pellets, storing pellets in a dry area, never unplugging the grill to turn it off, and covering it with a recteq cover. The first cook is a 400°F, one-hour burn-in with the lid down after placing about 1/4 cup of pellets in the firepot.

Is it worth it?

At the sale price, the feature set and 6-year warranty are easy to justify for a serious backyard cooker. At full list price, compare better-tested single-chamber pellet grills, because the independent test base here is essentially one hands-on review and the forum record includes feed and electronics issues. recteq lists the DualFire 1200 at $1,849.99, and its homepage shows a $1,359.99 sale against a $1,599.99 reference. SCHEELS, Northern Fire and Barbeques Galore list it at $1,849.99. Engadget reported a $1,799 launch price in October 2023.

Which model this is

This page covers the DualFire 1200, model RT-1200DF, the split-chamber pellet grill in recteq’s 1000-series line. The US retail listing is ASIN B0CKJ8YZ94. Do not merge it with recteq’s single-chamber Flagship 1100, Bull or Backyard Beast 1200, or with the newer X-Fire Pro 825, which is a different dual-mode pellet/gas design.
