Razer Kraken V4 X
Check the surround activation before you buy: the 7.1 mode needs product registration and a downloaded activation code, not plug-and-play.
Key specifications
- 40 mm TriForce drivers
- 310 g weight
- USB Type-C and Type-A wired cable
- 7.1 surround sound
Pros and cons
Pros
- Stereo sound is not hollow for the price, with accurate instrument staging and a touch of warmth.
- The wired USB-C connection with USB-A adapter covers PC and PS5 with no battery to charge.
- Logo-only Chroma RGB keeps the Razer look without paying for the V4's 9-zone lighting.
- Up to 2-year warranty, with 14-day risk-free returns on direct RazerStore purchases.
Cons
- Treble-heavy out-of-box tuning with weak sub-bass even after EQ, and only passable sound separation.
- The 84-inch cable is non-detachable, so cable damage means a warranty claim, not a swap.
- The mic retraction mechanism is awkward and hard to pull out.
- In r/razer, one owner calls the V4 X "the worst purchase I have ever made," citing sound and mic performance.

Sound and surround
Lowyat (December 2024) found the stereo image "not as hollow as expected," with accurate instrument staging and a touch of warmth, though front audio spreads to the sides in movies. The 7.1 mode "opens up" the sound, according to Lowyat, but is not as accurate as THX Spatial Audio and is not recommended for full-time use. An r/razer thread about the wireless V4 (same family) has an owner saying "I can't hear any bass which is weird for how much the v3 had" — weak bass is a family sore point.
Comfort and build
The hybrid fabric-and-leatherette memory foam cushions earn recurring praise for comfort and clamping force, and passive noise isolation is strong. Stream Tech Reviews rated comfort C+ all the same, so fit likely depends on head shape.
Software, activation and cable
The 7.1 surround is not plug-and-play. You register the product at razerid.razer.com, receive an activation code by email, and download the software from razer.com/7.1-surround-sound; Lowyat's first code was ineligible and activation failed until they got another. The 84-inch USB-C cable is non-detachable: if it fails, that is a warranty claim or a replacement headset, not a quick swap.
Is it worth it?
At its $79.99 launch MSRP (Q3 2024), the V4 X is a reasonable budget buy for wired PC and PS5 gaming with Razer comfort, Chroma RGB and software surround. Above $100 the value thins fast — you pay more than launch price for a plastic build, a cardioid mic and a cable you cannot replace. For reference, the wireless Kraken V4 launched at $179.99, and Razer lists the Sensa HD Haptics variant of this same headset at $99.99. JB Hi-Fi in Australia lists the standard V4 X at AUD $149 and a Pikachu/Eevee edition at AUD $179; Malaysian pricing was RM399 at launch. One r/razer owner sums up the line: Razer's "X" products are "budget versions made cheaply."
Which model this is
This page covers the wired Kraken V4 X, model RZ04-05180100-R3M1 — the budget wired entry in the V4 family, launched in Q3 2024 at a $79.99 MSRP.
Do not confuse it with the wireless Kraken V4, the V4 Pro, the V4 X Sensa HD Haptics, or the older V3 models — drivers, mics and lighting all differ. It works with PC and PS5, not Xbox.
