Razer Barracuda X: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-19

Summary

A 250g multi-platform wireless gaming headset whose USB-C 2.4GHz dongle works with PC, Android, Switch and PlayStation without drivers, and whose current 2021+ revision adds Bluetooth 5.2, the Razer Audio app and a 50-hour battery. The recurring complaints are about what is missing or fiddly: no carrying case, a dongle that protrudes from phones and the Switch in handheld mode, a notch-less headband that fits users inconsistently, and no wireless support for Xbox consoles. There are no running costs beyond charging; the optional THX Spatial Audio upgrade is a one-time purchase.

Common problems and fixes

Parts and consumables

No replaceable parts or consumables reported.

Yearly running cost

There are no recurring costs: no subscription is required for basic functionality and charging is just household electricity from occasional USB-C top-ups. The only optional spend is the THX Spatial Audio upgrade at about $10 promotional or $20 regular, a one-time purchase. The 50-hour battery on the current revision means charging is infrequent; the original 2020 revision was rated at about 20 hours. [1][2]

When it is a good buy

Razer’s US product page listed the Barracuda X from $99.99 in the October 2026 research pass; Tom’s Guide listed it at $99 from Razer and $69 from Newegg at the time of its review. At $70 to $90 it is a strong value for multi-platform wireless gaming, especially for Switch, PS5 and PC users who want one headset. At $90 to $110 (MSRP) it is fair but faces competition from headsets with better audio or ecosystem integration. Above $120 it is weak value unless the USB-C dongle feature is essential. [1][3]
