Summary

The RGB-equipped refresh of Razer’s Barracuda X wireless gaming headset: 285 g, 40 mm TriForce drivers, dual 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth 5.3 wireless, and 70-hour battery life with the lights off, for PC, PlayStation, Switch and mobile. Check the fine print before you buy: the 70-hour figure drops to about 30 hours with RGB on, and the 3.5 mm jack is gone, so wired audio is USB-C only.

Strengths

  • At 285 g with breathable memory foam cushions, it stays comfortable through long sessions, and reviewers say the extra weight over the 2022 model is not noticeable.
  • Battery life survives independent measurement: SoundGuys logged 72 h 43 m with RGB off and Wccftech about 71 h.
  • Dual wireless covers PC, PlayStation, Switch and mobile at the same time, and SmartSwitch moves between them quickly.
  • The HyperClear Cardioid mic draws consistent praise for clarity and background noise reduction.
  • Fifteen minutes on USB-C adds about six hours of play.
  • Sound is balanced out of the box, the Music preset suits most games and music, and positional cues are accurate.

Weaknesses

  • The 3.5 mm jack is gone; wired audio is USB-C only, a step back from the 2022 Barracuda X.
  • Bluetooth is SBC only, with no AAC, aptX or LDAC support.
  • The volume wheel is imprecise and spins when you lean back.
  • Xbox consoles are not supported at all.
  • With RGB on, battery life drops from 70 hours to about 30.
  • The lighting is invisible to the wearer; it exists for on-camera looks, and owners are split on mic quality.

Comfort and fit

Comfort is the strongest part of this headset. At 285 g it is 35 g heavier than the 250 g Barracuda X 2022, a difference owners attribute to the RGB hardware, and How-To Geek’s reviewer did not notice it in use. The padded headband and breathable fabric memory foam cushions carry through long sessions with minimal heat buildup. The trade-off is padding thickness: TechRadar found the earpads thin enough that the drivers contact your ears slightly. The volume wheel sits where your head meets the chair, and both TechRadar and How-To Geek report it turning when you lean back. The detachable mic has a keyed shape but can still be difficult to seat firmly.

Sound and surround

Reviewers describe the tuning as balanced and clear, with the Music preset the sensible default. How-To Geek calls it good for gaming, music and videos, with accurate positional cues; Wccftech likes the lively balance but finds the mids somewhat subdued, with higher frequencies getting lost in the low end. TechRadar says the 7.1 surround adds fullness but introduces airiness in the highs. SoundGuys’ panel scoring came in below average against other tested gaming headsets: the Music EQ follows their house curve more closely than the 2022 model, with more sub-bass and a treble peak at 7 kHz that may annoy some listeners.

Battery life and charging

Razer claims 70 hours with the lights off and 30 hours with them on, and the independent numbers agree. SoundGuys measured 72 h 43 m with RGB off, Wccftech about 71 h off and about 30 h on, and TechRadar only reached 54% after several days of varied use. A full charge takes about 4 hours, though TechRadar got from 50% to full in about 2.5 hours, and the 15-minute quick charge adds about 6 hours. One Reddit owner reports 16 days of use before dropping below 10%, while another reports severe overnight drain. Keep the lights off if you want the headline figure.

Software and reliability

The 7.1 surround sound is not enabled out of the box: it needs a software activation code and registration, and owners say it complicates setup. PC Gamer scored the headset 82/100, praising upgrades “worthy of a bigger fish” but noting key features are locked to the PC app. On Razer Insider, multiple users report the headset turning off or not being detected after Synapse 4 updates in January 2025; one fixed it by closing Synapse, others could not. Another user reported robotic, distorted audio specifically in games in May 2025 and returned the headset. Long-term data does not exist for the Chroma yet: it released in October 2024. Owners of the older Barracuda X are mixed — one had a 2021 unit RMA’d for 3 quality issues, another says their 2022 model has been fine over about 4 years. These are anecdotes, not defect rates. There is no user-replaceable battery and no parts catalog for the Chroma; the ear cushions and mic are the wear items to watch.

Is it worth it?

Razer’s MSRP is $129.99. TechRadar saw it at $99.99 from Best Buy and $103.20 from Walmart in February 2025, with Newegg and Razer at $129.99; Windows Central listed $129.99 at Best Buy and $98.99 at Walmart in December 2024. At under $100 the value is strong, at MSRP it is fair, and past $135 it gets hard to recommend. The case for paying extra over the non-Chroma Barracuda X comes down to RGB aesthetics, the upgraded mic and the battery improvement; that sibling lists at $99.99 and often sells for about $70, with the same core audio and comfort. There are no subscriptions and no required extras — the 7.1 surround is included — though Razer sells an optional Chroma base station for $79.

Which model this is

This page covers the Barracuda X Chroma, model RZ04-0522, Razer’s RGB refresh of the Barracuda X (2022, model RZ04-04430), announced in October 2024. Retailers use different SKUs for the same hardware, for example RZ04-05220100-R3U1, and it ships in Black, Phantom White and Phantom Green. It is not the 2022 non-Chroma Barracuda X, the Barracuda Wireless or the Barracuda Pro, and it does not work with Xbox consoles. The US Amazon listing is ASIN B0DJF1K8JN.
