Summary
Prusament Premium PLA is a polychromatic PLA filament whose Mystic colors shift with nozzle temperature, layer height and viewing angle, built on the same resin as standard Prusament PLA. Check your printing temperature and layer height before you buy: the Mystic effect only appears between roughly 210 and 230 °C, and with layer heights above 0.3 mm.
Strengths
- Manufacturer-guaranteed diameter tolerance of ±0.02 mm against the common ±0.05 mm industry standard.
- Per-spool QR code links to an individual manufacturing report with diameter and weight data.
- No abrasivity, so no special hot end is required.
- Mystic polychromatic colors shift with nozzle temperature, layer height and viewing angle.
- In-house production on Prusa’s own line.
Weaknesses
- No independent instrumented test of Prusament Premium PLA was found; evidence is manufacturer specifications and in-house tests.
- PLA is brittle with average toughness and is not ideal for outdoor or high-temperature use.
- Parts soften above about 60 °C, so it is unsuited to warm environments.
- Shipping costs from Prague drew complaints in manufacturer blog comments.
- 3D-printed PLA parts are not recommended for repeated food contact.

Which model this is
This page covers Prusament Premium PLA, the polychromatic Mystic tier, sold in 1 kg NFC spools in colors including Mystic Green and Mystic Brown. It is not Prusament rPLA, Prusament PLA blends, Prusament PETG, ASA, PC or PA, or Prusa Basic PLA. The Amazon listing for this product is ASIN B07R1CZ9VL.
Printing and the Mystic effect
Mystic optical properties change rapidly between 210 and 230 °C nozzle temperature, with higher temperature producing a glossier surface. Increasing layer height makes the color more vibrant, with best results from a larger nozzle and layer heights above 0.3 mm. Varying the viewing angle produces polychromatic streaks across the part. PLA material itself is food-safe, but 3D-printed PLA parts are not recommended for repeated food contact because layer grooves can harbor bacteria; a food-safe coating is suggested. PLA is biodegradable only in specialized composting facilities above 80 °C, not in home compost. Wet sanding is recommended for post-processing PLA to avoid local melting from friction. Prusa recommends increasing the number of perimeters rather than infill percentage for strength.
Tolerance and traceability
Prusa guarantees ±0.02 mm diameter tolerance against the common ±0.05 mm industry standard, which the manufacturer says can produce up to 11.4% flow-rate variation. Every spool carries a QR code linking to its individual manufacturing report with weight, length, diameter, standard deviation, ovality and a diameter graph. The spool uses Prusa’s own design, stated to require 50% less plastic than commonly used spools. The ±0.02 mm tolerance is a manufacturer guarantee; no independent instrumented test of Prusament Premium PLA was found from established test outlets. Evidence consists of manufacturer specifications and manufacturer-conducted in-house tests such as tensile strength, Charpy impact, melt flow index and moisture absorption. The per-spool QR-code diameter data is manufacturer-generated and not independently verified.
Running costs
Filament is a consumable, so ownership cost is replacement spools. Refill spools are offered for some colors at lower prices, for example $26.99. Keep the filament dry and avoid moisture; drying instructions are in the Prusa article. Clean the print surface with isopropyl alcohol or warm water and dish soap. Spool physical dimensions and packaging weight were not published in the sources read. Warranty terms specific to filament were not found in the sources read; general Prusa terms and conditions apply.
Is it worth it?
Prusa lists Mystic Green at $23.99 on sale against a $29.99 list price, and Printed Solid lists it at $35.99. Prusa’s 2018 launch price was $24.99. At $23.99 or less the filament is strong value; at $26 to $32 it is fair; above $32 it is weak unless the Mystic effect is wanted. The main value differentiator is verified tolerance plus per-spool traceability, not the PLA material itself, which is common. At $23.99 the package is a strong value for a buyer who wants verified tolerance and traceability; at $29.99 list it remains competitive for buyers wanting the color effect and traceability; at $35.99 US retailer pricing the value is fair to weak unless the Mystic polychromatic finish or Prusa sourcing is specifically required.
