Summary
A glitter-filled black PLA for display parts, props and organizers, with ±0.02 mm diameter tolerance and per-spool manufacturing records. Check the spool’s production date before buying: Czech-made rolls from March 13 to May 13, 2026 may clog, while US-made rolls were not affected.
Strengths
- Glitter particles give a metallic shimmer under direct light and can hide layer lines on display parts.
- Per-spool manufacturing records (diameter, ovality, weight, length) are published via QR code.
- In-house pellet production supports color consistency across batches.
- Works on non-Prusa printers accepting 1.75 mm filament.
- No enclosure required; prints with a standard 0.4 mm brass nozzle.
Weaknesses
- Czech-made spools produced March 13 to May 13, 2026 may clog or under-extrude from an incorrect masterbatch.
- Glitter can highlight ghosting and vibration ripples on some printers.
- Matte or rough surface finish at higher speeds unless outer-wall speed stays low.
- PLA softens around 55-60 °C, so parts fail near heat or in cars.
- Premium price over budget PLA for draft volume.

Print settings and nozzle choice
Prusa’s product page lists 215 °C nozzle and 50-60 °C bed with a 0.4 mm brass nozzle. The Prusa KB gives 215 °C first layer and 210 °C other layers at 60 °C bed, while the material guide gives 210 ± 10 °C and 40-60 °C bed with 100 % part cooling. All overlap; start with the product-page profile and tune from there. No enclosure is needed. The manufacturer rates max volumetric speed at up to 25 mm³/s, but an independent measurement on a stock hotend landed at ~17-19 mm³/s, so expect to slow down for clean surfaces.
The March-May 2026 masterbatch issue
On June 16, 2026 Prusa acknowledged that a limited number of Galaxy Black spools made in the Czech Republic between March 13 and May 13, 2026 contained an incorrect masterbatch that can clog nozzles. US-made spools were excluded. Prusa offers free replacement spools to affected owners who contact support with the spool code; production date comes from the spool QR code or box, not the order date. The notice is a targeted quality issue, not evidence that all Galaxy Black is unsafe, and Prusa did not publish an affected percentage.
Surface finish, speed and small nozzles
Glitter can disguise layer lines but may highlight ghosting from printer vibration. Owners report matte or rough surfaces at higher speeds on Bambu printers unless outer-wall speed stays below ~30 mm/s. Tiny nozzles raise clog risk: 0.4 mm is the published default, and 0.2 or 0.25 mm nozzles are discouraged with glitter. A 0.6 mm nozzle can be tried but does not guarantee a fix.
Heat, storage and running costs
PLA softens around 55-60 °C, so Galaxy Black suits indoor display parts, props and organizers, not heat-exposed or outdoor load-bearing parts. Storage life is one year from manufacture in a dry, cool place at 5-30 °C. Filament is the dominant cost: at the Prusa US listing of $25.49 per kg, 100 g costs $2.55 and 250 g costs $6.37; at the Printed Solid listing of $37.99 per kg, the same amounts cost $3.80 and $9.50. A 3 kg year costs $76.47 at $25.49 or $113.97 at $37.99. No enclosure or special nozzle is required, and no subscription applies.
Is it worth it?
At $23.99 on sale from a $29.99 regular price on Prusa direct, it is a reasonable buy for display parts where appearance and consistency matter. At $25.49 direct it is justifiable for the finish and per-spool data, especially on a tuned Prusament setup. Choose Prusament PETG Galaxy Black at $25.49 if the part needs more heat or toughness; it uses different settings.
Which model this is
This page covers the standard Prusament PLA Prusa Galaxy Black, 1.75 mm, 1 kg spool, made by Prusa Polymers. It is not PETG Galaxy Black, PLA High Speed Galaxy Black, a 900 g refill, a 2 kg spool, or solid Jet Black. Hardware model identifiers on the Prusa page are IDF 17702 and IDS 3402. Spools shipped from October 2025 carry an OpenPrintTag NFC tag; older spools may lack it. The Amazon listing for this filament is ASIN B07M8GWZBS.
