Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

Prusament PLA Jet Black is a 1 kg spool of 1.75 mm PLA for everyday FFF printing, sold with a measured filament diameter and a traceable spool code. Check your printer and your budget before you buy: it costs more than basic black PLA, and owners have reported clogs and feed loops on some spools.

Strengths

  • Measured ±0.02 mm filament diameter and a documented color recipe give batch-to-batch repeatability for visible parts.
  • Low warping and strong cooling suit large flat prints and fine detail without an enclosure or hardened nozzle.
  • Prusa calls Jet Black a glossy deep black; owners report sheen shifts with temperature and print speed.
  • 3D Printer World finds the spool history and finish may be worth paying for on visible work.
  • A refill exists at $26.99 (Printed Solid, SKU 016627564603) for compatible older refillable spools.

Weaknesses

  • Owners report underextrusion and nozzle clogging on some exact Jet Black spools, including failure after 6–7 hours.
  • A December 2025 batch was reported in 2026 to clog and run at PETG-like temperatures; the cause is unconfirmed.
  • Feed loops and blocked filament were reported on two Prusa machines in May 2026.
  • First-layer adhesion trouble on smooth PEI was reported in April 2025 (single case).
  • Small-feature finish can be rougher than some other PLAs; mild stringing persists for some users.
  • PLA heat resistance is 55 °C and it is UV-sensitive and relatively brittle.

Printing and finish

Prusa lists Jet Black at 215 °C nozzle and 50–60 °C bed, while the material sheet gives 210 ±10 °C nozzle and 40–60 °C bed with 100% part cooling and speeds up to 200 mm/s. The 0.4 mm brass nozzle is the recommended starting point, and neither a heated bed nor an enclosure is required. Owners report that gloss varies with extrusion temperature and speed: glossy layers around 215 °C, more matte around 190 °C, and a nearly matte look at 150+ mm/s. Alternate fast infill with slow perimeters and the same part can show different sheen, so run a small appearance test when finish matters.

Clogs, tangles and first-layer issues

A Prusa forum thread starting July 2022 collects exact-Jet-Black clog reports: stopped extrusion, extruder clicking, temporary relief after cold pulls, and one failure after 6–7 hours, with drying not fixing the first report. Spools dated December 5, 2022 and August 2023 drew similar complaints, and one owner found speed reduction helpful. A spool manufactured December 20–21, 2025 and bought February 2026 reportedly clogged and ran better at temperatures ordinarily associated with PETG; owners speculated mislabeled material, but no manufacturer confirmation or chemical identification was found. In May 2026 a Reddit owner reported snapped or stuck filament on two Prusa machines and a strand caught under another winding; other commenters diagnosed a trapped loop, and Prusa explains that letting the free filament end slip can itself create a crossed-over loop. An April 2025 owner reported poor smooth-sheet adhesion with Jet Black and silver on a Prusa MK4, improving on satin, but one case cannot establish a line-wide adhesion defect. A September 2020 owner found Jet Black rougher on fine detail than eSUN PLA+ at similar settings. No representative dataset gives an exact-Jet-Black batch failure percentage, median time to clog, or warranty claim rate. A reported faulty Galaxy Black PLA 2026 batch is a different color and must not be projected onto Jet Black.

Prusa’s US listing shows $29.99 for the 1 kg Jet Black spool (checked October 2026); the official materials color page shows the same $29.99. Printed Solid lists a made-in-USA 1 kg refill at $26.99 (SKU 016627564603), with an unconfirmed collection-page sale at $21.59, and states that refill is incompatible with Prusa NFC spools. Prusa’s 2 kg spool is $49.99, about $25.00/kg. Printed Solid advertises free domestic shipping over $50, so a single roll’s delivery charge must be checked. Alternatives at lower prices: ELEGOO PLA Black at $13.99/kg, ELEGOO PLA Pro Black at $16.99/kg, and Jessie Premium PLA X Black at $24.99/kg (all October 2026, US). Their black pigment and finish are not guaranteed to match Jet Black.

Running costs scale with grams printed, not with time. At the verified $29.99 per 1 kg spool: 1 kg/year = $29.99, 3 kg/year = $89.97, 5 kg/year = $149.95, before tax and shipping. A printer using 2 kg spools at $49.99 lands at $25.00/kg. Drying when needed takes 45 °C for six hours; no annual electricity estimate is possible without dryer power draw and cycle count. These figures exclude printer electricity, labor, failed prints, nozzles, storage gear and shipping.

Support terms: Prusa allows no-reason returns within 60 days after delivery, but opened or used filament spools are not eligible for ordinary change-of-mind returns. Prusa’s warranty page lists filament among limited consumables with a term of “After opening or 1 year,” while exempting defects in materials or workmanship. Printed Solid advertises a 1-year standard manufacturer warranty for its brand and normally follows the manufacturer’s policy on non-Printed-Solid brands, with unopened or unused packaging required for ordinary returns and a possible restocking fee on some opened-unused cases. Owners with clog complaints should contact support with invoice, spool code, printing settings and evidence before discarding packaging; no exact-Jet-Black support resolution time or replacement percentage was published.

Is it worth it?

At $25.00/kg or less, the exact full 1 kg spool is a good buy if shipping is reasonable. At the regular $29.99 it is a deliberate premium purchase for spool traceability, a particular color and finish, or repeatability. The 2 kg spool at about $25.00/kg suits users committed to the same black who can mount the larger roll.

Which model this is

This page covers Prusament PLA Jet Black, 1.75 mm, 1 kg, product IDs 17704 / 3414. The manufacturer sells this shade as ordinary Prusament PLA Jet Black; “Premium” in the queue title describes the brand’s quality positioning, not a separate formula. Jet Black is a plain glossy black, not the glitter-containing Prusa Galaxy Black and not Prusament PETG Jet Black. Spools redesigned from October 2025 carry an OpenPrintTag NFC tag, and a full spool and a refill are not interchangeable SKUs. The refill (Printed Solid, SKU 016627564603) is made in the USA and explicitly incompatible with Prusa NFC spools.
