Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

The Original Prusa MINI+ is a compact open-frame FDM printer with a 180 × 180 × 180 mm build volume and a Bowden extruder, aimed at beginners who want long-term support. Check the bundle before buying: Wi-Fi, the filament sensor and an enclosure are optional, and prices vary by channel.

Strengths

  • Reliability and consistency over long use; routine failures are typical FDM issues rather than Prusa-specific defects.
  • Beginner-friendly setup with detailed documentation.
  • PrusaSlicer is free and carefully tuned, and Prusa Connect is a mature remote-monitoring platform.
  • Long-term firmware support, including the Input Shaping update.
  • Full repairability and open-source design with spare parts sold directly by Prusa.
  • Active, knowledgeable community.

Weaknesses

  • Slower than modern CoreXY competitors (practical 80–120 mm/s).
  • Limited material range without an enclosure; high-temperature materials are not a base capability.
  • Bowden extrusion limits flexible filament such as TPU.
  • No enclosure included in the base price.
  • Higher price relative to raw specifications (“Prusa Tax”).
  • PTFE tube requires periodic replacement (6–12 months).

Speed and materials

Practical speeds land at 80–120 mm/s, against 200–300 mm/s for modern CoreXY competitors, because the MINI+ lacks a high-flow hotend and CoreXY kinematics. The Bowden path limits flexible filament such as TPU, and ABS, ASA, Nylon and PC need an enclosure and better temperature management that the base configuration does not include.

Reliability and maintenance

Owners and reviewers report thousands of hours of printing with only routine FDM failures such as clogs, loose belts and bed-adhesion problems. Maintenance is periodic: nozzle checks and replacement, occasional belt tensioning, keeping the PEI sheet clean, and replacing the PTFE tube in the heatbreak every 6–12 months. Spare parts are sold directly from Prusa, and the open-source design allows third-party or self-printed parts.

Warranty and ownership costs

Prusa’s manual states a 24-month warranty for end customers and 12 months for businesses, with wear-and-tear components and consumables excluded. A US reseller lists a 1-year standard manufacturer warranty, and Prusa sells a +1 year extension purchased only at the same time as the product. Verify the term on the actual order. Ownership costs beyond the printer include 1.75 mm filament, consumables such as nozzles, PEI sheets and the PTFE tube, an optional Wi-Fi module, an optional enclosure, and a possible warranty extension.

Store prices vary by bundle and channel. Prusa’s product page lists the semi-assembled printer with enclosure bundle at $508.33. PrintedSolid lists $639 for the kit and $669 assembled. A 2026 review article describes kit and semi-assembled units starting around $349 and $449, in a $400–$450 band.

Is it worth it?

At or below about $350 for the kit, value is strong for a beginner or print-farm buyer who wants Prusa’s documentation, ecosystem and repairability. Between $351 and $450 it is good value, especially for education and long-term ownership. From $451 to $550 it is fair; compare against faster CoreXY alternatives and verify bundle contents such as enclosure and filament sensor. Above about $550 without an enclosure bundle it is weak unless the Prusa ecosystem, open-source repairability and firmware support are specifically required. The premium buys long-term firmware support, free PrusaSlicer and Prusa Connect, spare parts and a decade-long support track record; it does not buy speed.

Which model this is

This page covers the Original Prusa MINI+, the current hardware platform that replaced the Original Prusa MINI in November 2020. The MINI+ added a SuperPINDA mesh-bed-leveling probe in place of the earlier MINDA sensor; the filament sensor is an optional extra. A September 2023 firmware update added PrusaConnect remote management and Input Shaping without hardware changes. The printer is sold as a kit or semi-assembled unit, sometimes bundled with an enclosure. Do not confuse it with the predecessor Original Prusa MINI.
