Summary
The Presto Precise 17-Quart Digital Pressure Canner is an electric countertop canner that regulates temperature instead of pressure, so it needs no altitude adjustment for pressure canning. Check who verified it before you buy: no agency or extension service has independently tested it, and Presto’s own FAQ says it is not USDA- or NCHFP-approved.
Strengths
- Automates the workflow: step-by-step LED prompts remove gauge-watching, and automatic venting handles the release.
- Needs no altitude adjustment for pressure canning, which stovetop dial-gauge canners do.
- Keeps jars warm before processing and holds temperature steady; owners call the process relaxing.
- Doubles as a boiling-water canner for high-acid foods.
- Fits quart jars in a countertop electric unit, up to 5 per batch.
- Presto sells service parts and the manual for this model.
Weaknesses
- No independent testing: Oregon State University Extension and SimplyCanning both say no one outside Presto has tested it.
- Presto’s own FAQ says it is not approved by USDA or the National Center for Home Food Preservation; all safety claims are Presto’s.
- It costs $450.99 direct from Presto (2026-10-20), a premium price.
- An r/Canning owner reports up to half a batch failing to seal across several foods.
- A Homesteading owner reports the green latch piece breaking after about 3 years.
- The unit is tall and bulky at 24.3 lb, so check your counter and storage space.

What it is and who it is for
The 02152 is an electric countertop pressure canner and boiling-water canner. Instead of a dial gauge or weighted regulator, it uses a temperature sensor, and Presto says it holds 240–250 °F automatically and adjusts for altitude during pressure canning. It runs on 120 V at 1485 W and holds a 17-quart (16-liter) removable pot. If you want to can without a stove and without watching a gauge, this is the machine built for that.
Capacity and the double-decking rule
Jar capacity depends on jar style and mouth. Presto’s chart lists 19 regular half-pints, 13 wide half-pints, 8 regular pints, 13 wide pints or 5 quarts for pressure canning, and 10 regular half-pints, 7 wide, 8 regular pints, 7 wide or 5 quarts for boiling-water canning. You have to double-deck to reach the maximum pressure-canning capacity, and Presto says not to double-deck for boiling-water canning. Quart jars fit, but they cut a pressure-canning batch to 5. A hands-on comparison with the 12-qt 02144 found the 02152 heavier and bulkier, worth choosing only if you have the counter and storage room.
The missing independent test
“Meets USDA guidelines” is not USDA approval. Presto’s own footnote states the USDA and NCHFP provide guidelines but neither agency certifies or approves home canning equipment. Presto’s FAQ says the canner has not been approved by USDA/NCHFP and that all safety claims rest on Presto’s own testing. Oregon State University Extension states that, as of its PNW 421 publication, Cooperative Extension had not conducted independent testing of the product. A 2021 Ask Extension answer said USDA, Extension and NCHFP were not recommending any electric pressure canner because none had been tested by an independent researcher, and that OSU Food Science was testing the Presto canner; no public results were located. Buyers are therefore relying on manufacturer-processed USDA timing.
Owner experience and failure modes
Owners who like it praise the automation: the step-by-step LED display removes gauge-watching, jars preheat automatically, and no altitude adjustment is needed for pressure canning. A SimplyCanning commenter who used it for about a year says it keeps temperature and pressure consistent, and another reports all jars sealing with little liquid loss, though jars prewarm for about 20 minutes and the step sequence is involved. One r/Canning owner reports up to half a batch failing to seal across potatoes, green beans, beef stew and ground beef. A Homesteading owner reports the green latch piece breaking after about 3 years. A WSU-hosted review lists error codes not documented in the manual and heavy siphoning with seal failure. These are anecdotes, not defect rates.
Maintenance, parts and running costs
Run a water test before first use (3 quarts of water to the fill line) and clean the parts. Replace the sealing ring, air vent/cover lock gasket and sensor gasket if they are hard, deformed, cracked or torn, and use only genuine Presto parts. Presto sells service parts and the instruction manual for this model; the printed manual is $5.99 (2026-10-20). Recurring costs are jars, lids and rings, electricity, and periodic genuine Presto gaskets. The unit is countertop-only.
Is it worth it?
Presto direct lists the 02152 at $450.99 with free shipping (2026-10-20). A third-party eBay reseller lists the same model at $365.50–$531.99. Its value is strongest for buyers who specifically want an electric, gauge-free, altitude-free pressure canner and accept the manufacturer-tested USDA timing. The newer hybrid digital canners 02153 (23 qt) and 02154 (16 qt) run at 1100 W in heavy-gauge aluminum and hold more jars per batch, but they are a different product line.
Which model this is
This page covers the Presto Precise 17-Quart Digital Pressure Canner, Stock No. 02152, a 17-quart electric digital pressure canner. Presto sells service parts and manuals under the longer model numbers 0215204 and 0215207, which are the same product line. The seven-digit model number is printed on a label on the back; Presto’s how-to videos for 02144/02152 apply to model numbers 0214408 and 0215204, while lower numbers use the older procedure. The Amazon listing for this model is ASIN B0DCDWGXCV. Do not merge it with the newer hybrid canners 02153 and 02154 or the 12-qt 02144.
