Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A very soft 90A TPU filament for direct-drive printers, aimed at flexible parts like gaskets, grips and bumpers. Check your extruder path and drying setup before buying: it needs a geared direct drive, slow speeds, and 70 C drying, and Bowden setups are not recommended.

Strengths

  • Softer than the 95A class for compliant and anti-slip parts.
  • TDS mechanical values and four ISO 10993 reports back the material.
  • Can work on common direct-drive printers with tuning.
  • Manufacturer publishes legacy printer profiles for this material.
  • B&H listed the black 1.75 mm spool at $39.99 in October 2026.
  • Owners report good results and color consistency after dialing in.

Weaknesses

  • Bowden and long feed paths are not recommended.
  • Stringing and slow speeds are common; tuning is required.
  • At least one owner reported poor spool winding that snags.
  • Strong layer adhesion makes support removal difficult.
  • Drying guidance conflicts between the store page and the TDS.
  • No independent instrumented test of this exact filament was found.

Printing requirements and compatibility

PolyFlex TPU90 is a soft strand that deforms easily between the drive gear and the melt zone, so the feed path matters as much as the printer. Polymaker strongly recommends a geared direct-drive extruder and warns that Bowden setups will be difficult. Recommended conditions are a 210-230 C nozzle, 25-60 C bed, fan ON, 30-70 mm/s print speed (tips suggest 30-60 mm/s), 3-6 mm retraction at 40-60 mm/s, and 70 C drying for 8 h, with no enclosure. The material is UV resistant and carries four ISO 10993 biocompatibility test reports, but those reports do not certify a finished printed part for food or medical use. Shore hardness is only an indication of printed-part flexibility; infill, wall count, top and bottom layers, and layer height also control the final feel.

Common failures and annoyances

Owners report intermittent extrusion loss and filament buckling, especially on machines that handle harder TPU fine, along with stringing, internal blobs, and travel marks. Wet filament can worsen surface quality, yet drying for long periods does not fix every problem. Repeat prints can vary, and one owner saw better results at 230 C after drying for 15 h. Spool winding issues and difficult support removal also recur. There is no measured failure rate for any of these; the reports span first prints to repeat jobs.

Cost and ownership

The manufacturer lists $39.99 for the 1.75 mm variants, and B&H listed the black 1.75 mm spool at $39.99 in October 2026. That is $53.32 per kg by arithmetic. Filament scenarios at that price: 0.75 kg per year is $39.99, 1.5 kg per year is $79.98, and 3.0 kg per year is $159.96. An optional PolyDryer is $79.99, and drying equipment is a one-time purchase rather than a recurring cost. There is no subscription. The 2.85 mm variants are being discontinued, black 1.75 mm was backordered direct, and wholesale stock was marked final sale.

Is it worth it?

At $39.99 for 750 g, PolyFlex TPU90 is reasonable for direct-drive owners who need 90A softness and can dry filament. It is weaker value for Bowden owners or anyone who cannot manage slow speeds and drying. If 95A is sufficient, the $29.99 PolyFlex TPU95 and lower-cost 95A alternatives are economically stronger.

Which model this is

This page covers Polymaker PolyFlex TPU90, a Shore 90A TPU filament in the Covestro Addigy family, 1.75 mm diameter, 0.75 kg net weight, black SKU PD02001. The line also comes in White, Grey, Polymaker Teal and Clear, and in 2.85 mm, which is being discontinued. Do not confuse it with PolyFlex TPU95 or PolyFlex TPU95-HF, which are different shore hardnesses.
