Polymaker Fiberon PPS-GF20: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-25
Summary
Common problems are filament snapping on the spool under tight bends, abrasive nozzle erosion, excessive first-layer adhesion on some build plates, weak layer bonding below the 310°C minimum, dimensional change during the required 130°C/10 h anneal, and Z-direction weakness. Running cost is material-driven: $59.99 per 0.5 kg at the observed in-stock B&H price, or $119.98 per kg, plus an unquantified nozzle and purge allowance; there is no subscription. It is a defensible buy at $51–$60 per 500 g for an already-equipped high-temperature printer, and a poor buy above $70 per 500 g against the documented $59.99 option.
Common problems and fixes
- Filament snaps while feeding — the manufacturer states PPS-GF20 is brittle on the spool and can break under tight bends. This is a feed-path or material-handling failure rather than proof that the final heat-treated part is equally brittle. Fix: keep loops large, avoid excessive friction, and route directly from a drybox or holder; test the specific AMS or feed path rather than presuming automated operation. Incidence and spool-age distribution are unknown. Warranty coverage is not documented for consumed filament. [2][7]
- Abrasive nozzle erosion — the TDS warns brass-nozzle abrasion occurs frequently, which can enlarge the effective orifice and affect surface texture, extrusion dimensions and tolerance before total failure. Fix: use a correctly sized wear-resistant tip and recheck extrusion calibration when changing from brass. No defensible kg-per-nozzle replacement schedule for this exact material was located. Warranty coverage is not documented. [3][12]
- First-layer overadhesion or damaged build surface — a self-reported 2026 PPS-GF20 user said the filament stuck excessively on bare textured PEI, while an engineering plate improved removal; another owner reported an initial adhesion failure resolved by changing slicing parameters. These are different configurations, not proof that every print will damage a plate. Fix: test small specimens and follow the plate maker’s release-film or adhesive guidance. Warranty coverage is not documented. [9][11]
- Dimensional changes from annealing — the manufacturer’s own 40 mm test specimen shrank measurably, from 39.86 mm to 39.81 mm in XY and 39.76 mm to 39.56 mm in Z, with a 10 mm hole moving from 9.95 mm to 9.89 mm. A real thin or constrained component may warp more than that cube. Fix: print oversized qualification coupons, keep the annealing process uniform, and assess final fit after, not before, heat treatment. No population-based distortion rate was found. Warranty coverage is not documented. [3]
- Small-geometry impact or Z weakness — Z elongation of 1.1% and Z tensile strength of 22.9 MPa on annealed samples can make layer-oriented small tabs or snap features a poor use case. Treat the printed product as anisotropic; it is not inherently equivalent to machined PPS stock. Warranty coverage is not documented. [3]
- UL and ESD labeling risk — UL94 V-0 at 1.5 mm describes a manufacturer-reported specimen test and does not certify a whole electrical enclosure. Surface resistivity above 10^12 ohms does not establish ESD-safe discharge. Buying this filament alone does not make a safety-critical or ESD-controlled design compliant. Warranty coverage is not documented. [1][2][3]
Parts and consumables
- Fiberon PPS-GF20, Gray 0.5 kg (FM02001) — $59.99 at B&H, in stock with free standard shipping; $59.99 direct from Polymaker but sold out or backordered. Replenish proportional to print mass, failed prints, supports and purge. Six 0.5 kg rolls would cost $359.94 before tax and shipping if each is available at that price. [4][5]
- Fiberon PPS-GF20, Gray 3 kg — $289.99 at MatterHackers, with estimated rather than confirmed stock. Same material and diameter family, but check large spool fit and feed. Replace when consumed. [13]
- Wear-resistant nozzle example: Phaetus Tungsten Carbide PS (V6) — $20.80 promotional headline, 550°C maximum nozzle rating, sold out when captured. Example only for a genuine V6-shaped hotend; it will not fit every printer, and the machine’s other components must also be rated for 310–350°C. The seller’s “lasts a lifetime” claim is not evidence of measured PPS-GF20 wear life. Replace only when worn or defective; no predictable duration established. [12]
- Bambu H2D hardened-steel hotend or nozzle — $20.99 in its H2D-compatible listing, maximum 350°C, with a restock or notify notice. Relevant only to the specified Bambu H2D printer, not to Prusa, V6 or QIDI mounts. Manufacturer recommends a 0.6 mm hardened tip for particulate-filled materials to reduce clogging or abrasion. Replace as damaged or worn, not yearly. [18]
- Optional Polymaker PolySupport for PA12 (PW01001, 0.5 kg) — $39.99 direct from Polymaker; its direct page indicated unavailable. The PPS-GF20 TDS suggests it as a support interface material. Its own normal nozzle range of 270–300°C means toolhead, toolchanger and interface conditions must be validated before claiming safe shared-nozzle compatibility with PPS-GF20’s 310–350°C print requirement. [3][19]
Yearly running cost
No subscription is necessary to use the filament. Material cost depends on kilograms consumed, rejected prints, supports and procurement channel. At $59.99 per 0.5 kg, consuming 0.5 kg per year costs $59.99, 1 kg per year costs $119.98 and 3 kg per year costs $359.94 before tax and shipping. A separately procured 3 kg reel at $289.99 would reduce a 3 kg bill by $69.95 before added handling or availability costs, if it can actually be purchased at that listed price. An illustrative 1 kg per year service scenario totals $140.78 before tax, transport, equipment or electricity: two 500 g rolls at $119.98 plus one $20.80 Phaetus nozzle at its listed promotional price if restocked and fitting the printer. A compatible hardened nozzle may already be installed and need no replacement; real nozzle wear frequency is not established. Energy: a 10-hour, 130°C annealing cycle and an occasional 10-hour, 100°C drying cycle do not define electric power draw. An example appliance averaging an assumed 200 W for 10 h uses 2 kWh, or $0.40 at an illustrative $0.20/kWh; neither the wattage nor the rate is a measured PPS-GF20 owner statistic. Printing power depends on actual hotend, bed and chamber cycle, time and printer; measured kWh at the wall is required for real annual electricity cost. Not enough data for a universal annual total, and no independently sampled average annual total, grams wasted per kilogram printed or hardened-nozzle failure distribution could be verified.
When it is a good buy
Observed US offers, October 2026, before tax unless noted: B&H Photo, an authorized dealer, at $59.99 for genuine FM02001 Gray 500 g, in stock with free standard shipping; Polymaker direct at $59.99 for FM02001 Gray 500 g, sold out or backordered; Prusa at $67.50 for gray 500 g, in stock with 1–3 business days preparation, with final US landed total, VAT or duties and international shipping not verified; MatterHackers at $289.99 for a gray 3 kg variant with estimated restock rather than confirmed immediate availability; a dated August 2026 catalog compilation citing $279.99, or $93.33/kg, for the 3 kg reel, with the live manufacturer page not unambiguously confirming a purchasable current 3 kg variant price; Polymaker wholesale at $44.99 per 500 g, a 25% discounted business price requiring a $1,000 minimum order, with the selected product backordered; Voxel Factory at $81.99 for gray 500 g, marked four units available, but a Canadian seller with price currency, duties and US delivered total not substantiated. [4][5][8][13][14][15][16]
Editorial thresholds: at or below $50 per 500 g is attractive for a user already equipped for PPS-GF20, though a currently available US retail $50 offer was not verified; $51–$60 per 500 g is the normal defensible US buy zone, with the $59.99 B&H offer as the verified immediate-purchase benchmark; $61–$70 per 500 g only if the seller’s delivery or support is materially better, and compare PPS-CF10 at $69.99 per 500 g only if electrical insulation is not needed, because its carbon-filled behavior changes the use case; above $70 per 500 g is generally poor value against the documented $59.99 in-stock B&H option unless there is substantial added service or lead-time value. [4][17]
Named alternatives:
- Polymaker Fiberon PPS-CF10 — black 0.5 kg at $69.99 on the official US catalog. Better when the engineer prioritizes a carbon-filled PPS’s stiffness or finish and does not require electrical insulation. Its manufacturer-reported post-anneal HDT is 252.5°C at 0.45 MPa versus PPS-GF20’s 236.3°C, but do not infer better performance under every load; thermal tests and print process differ. It still requires 310–350°C-class equipment and a wear-resistant nozzle. [2][3][17]
- Polymaker Fiberon PET-CF17 — black 0.5 kg at $24.99 on the official catalog. 17% carbon-filled PET; its official specification recommends a 270–300°C nozzle and approximately 70–80°C bed. Better for a buyer with a 300°C ceiling or a budget-sensitive jig or fixture that does not need PPS-GF20 electrical insulation and 236°C-class low-load post-anneal heat performance. Verify actual hardware and post-anneal specifications for this different material. [17]
- Polymaker Fiberon PA6-GF25 — gray 0.5 kg at $29.99 on the official catalog. Glass-filled nylon intended for mechanical engineering tasks at less initial material expense, but moisture handling and its temperature and strength profile differ; it is not a certified electrical-insulating PPS drop-in. A better option when high PPS chemical or heat resistance is not required and a user is already equipped to dry nylon carefully. [17]
