Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

Polymaker PETG is a 1.75 mm, 1 kg PETG sold in a color queued as Army Green, with a manufacturer-rated high-speed formula suited to brackets, fixtures and weather-exposed parts. Check the color name and the formula before you buy: the official US store lists Dark Green, not Army Green, and PETG needs dry storage and careful tuning.

Strengths

  • Designed for higher flow and better layer adhesion than old PolyLite PETG, with usable fan cooling, lower warping and no heated chamber.
  • TDS documents functional-part strength and water, oil and grease resistance rated “good” in its limited chemical-resistance chart.
  • Mixed but positive feedback includes an owner on an independent forum saying the new formula printed beautifully; a store review for new-formula Dark Green reports easy printing.
  • Hardened-edge cardboard spools aim to reduce material-station rolling problems without requiring a plastic spool.
  • No proprietary nozzle, cartridge or filter is specified for ordinary non-filled PETG.

Weaknesses

  • Moisture can cause stringing, popping, surface roughness or weak layers; drying may be needed even from a recently opened pack.
  • Surface pits and zits after drying reported; one user improved results by lowering retraction toward 0.4 mm and nozzle to 245 °C.
  • Thermal deformation reported after 8 hours at 65 °C, consistent with the TDS heat-deflection value near 65 °C under higher load.
  • Color and batch variation reported on new-formula Dark Green: changed gloss, muted brownish shade, different flow, support friction.
  • Cardboard spool edge damage and AMS problems reported by some owners; others report trouble-free use.
  • No food-safe certification for printed end-use parts.

Printing and tuning

Polymaker rates the material up to 300 mm/s, with the Wiki claiming over 500 mm/s on a high-flow nozzle and volumetric flow up to 22 mm³/s on stock Bambu hardware and 32 mm³/s on a high-flow E3D hotend. Those are setup-dependent supplier claims, not independent verification. Starting settings are 240–260 °C nozzle, 60–70 °C bed, 20–60% fan, with PC or textured PEI build surfaces and no enclosure. Retraction guidance is 1–3 mm at 20–40 mm/s, with direct-drive setups sometimes needing lower values if surface pits appear. One November 2025 user reported improved surfaces by moving retraction from about 1 mm toward 0.4 mm and lowering nozzle temperature to 245 °C; another August 2026 user reported persistent bubbles on silver even after extensive drying. Slicer flow, cooling, nozzle temperature and retraction interact, and very high advertised speeds will not be reachable on every stock hotend.

Moisture and storage

PETG absorbs moisture in storage and can need drying even from a recently opened pack, producing stringing, popping, surface roughness or weak layers. Polymaker’s moisture guide explains the symptoms and recommends dry storage. Drying guidance conflicts: TDS v2.0 says 55 °C for 6 hours, while the current product page and Wiki say 60 °C for 6 hours. Follow the specific spool or package instructions and dryer safety limits, and do not treat 55 and 60 °C as one unambiguous setting. A March 2026 owner reported PETG High Speed accessories warping during eight hours in a dryer set to 65 °C, consistent with the TDS heat-deflection value near 65 °C at higher load. Keep PETG away from hot cars, dryer hardware and heat-loaded applications near the rated HDT.

Color and batch risk

The queued product is called Army Green, but the official US Polymaker PETG store lists Dark Green (#223622) and Green, not a PETG color named Army Green. The company’s Army Green listing seen on the official promotional page is PLA Pro, a different polymer. Partsbuilt independently lists the new PETG as Dark Green 1 kg. No independent manufacturer SKU or UPC equivalence for Army Green versus Dark Green was verified. A new-formula Dark Green buyer reported changed gloss, a muted brownish shade, different flow behavior and difficulty obtaining support without extra photos and batch evidence; the manufacturer replied that replacement and QC investigation were appropriate. That report is relevant to the suspected color family but is not proof that the listed Army Green roll shares that batch. Confirm the formula and shade on the packaging and UPC before relying on a color match, and do not silently substitute Army Green PLA or ASA for PETG.

Official US store shows $19.99 for new-formula Dark Green 1 kg (October 2026); the official PETG product page also shows the color and variant choices. Partsbuilt 3D lists Polymaker PETG Dark Green 1.75 mm, 1 kg at $25.99, but that listing carries mixed PolyLite series metadata, so verify that a shipped roll is new-formula PETG. Polymaker advertises free US economy shipping over $49, while ELEGOO’s displayed terms indicate free US shipping over $50; verify checkout for a single roll. ELEGOO Rapid PETG and ELEGOO PETG Pro are listed at $13.99/kg from ELEGOO’s US shop; PETG Pro offers an Olive Green option, not a guaranteed shade match. Bambu Lab PETG Basic 1 kg is displayed at $13.99 via NEX3D with refill and spool choices; confirm the selected version and final price, since a refill is not a complete spool.

Good buy at $19.99 or less per kg for a confirmed new-formula Dark Green or Army Green-equivalent roll from a reliable retailer, before unusual shipping charges. Poor buy above $25.99/kg unless a specific Polymaker shade or performance characteristic is essential.

Running costs scale with printed volume, not with time. Illustrative annual material spend at the checked $19.99–$25.99 per kg references: 1 kg/year = $19.99–$25.99, 3 kg/year = $59.97–$77.97, 5 kg/year = $99.95–$129.95. This includes filament only, assuming purchased kilograms are used; it excludes waste and supports, shipping, sales tax, printer depreciation, electricity, dryer operation and any optional $79.99 dryer. Drying requires about six hours per manufacturer cycle (55 °C per TDS, 60 °C per Wiki); no defensible annual electricity estimate is possible without the dryer model, power consumption and number of cycles. The optional Polymaker PolyDryer dryer plus storage box, SKU PX01002_A, is listed at $79.99 in the US store; buy once only if not already equipped.

Support terms: Polymaker’s written US direct-store refund policy (updated April 2026) provides 60 days from delivery for unused, unopened returns with proof of purchase; for a defective or incorrect opened roll, contact support first. For a suspected defect, email support@polymaker.com with order number, problem, printing settings, pictures of the spool and batch number. The published policy says verified defective items receive a refund or replacement, normally without returning the spool unless instructed, and the shipping policy says support aims to reply in 1–2 business days. The product and store promotional badges separately say 40-day return, an unresolved inconsistency; the written policy is more specific, but confirm current terms with Polymaker before relying on either number. A Dark Green owner’s complaint documents friction with requested photographic proof; a brand representative publicly offered replacement and QC review. That is one reported experience, not a support-resolution-rate statistic. For purchases from a reseller, the direct-store refund window does not automatically apply; verify the seller’s separate policy. No specific multi-year manufacturer’s warranty for the filament itself was found in the checked terms.

Is it worth it?

At $19.99/kg or less, a confirmed new-formula roll is a fair-to-good buy for functional PETG parts. Between $20 and $25.99/kg it is reasonable if a specific Polymaker shade or the documented flow characteristics matter. PETG is a sensible choice for brackets, fixtures and weather-exposed accessories, provided operating temperatures stay well below the load-dependent heat-deflection values and the filament is kept dry. Buyers who need a muted green and do not require this exact shade can consider ELEGOO PETG Pro Olive Green at $13.99/kg.

Which model this is

This page is queued as Polymaker PETG Filament 1.75 mm Army Green 1 kg, but the official US PETG choices do not clearly use the Army Green name. The closest documented shade is Dark Green #223622. Confirm whether the roll is new formula and match the shade and UPC against manufacturer records before reordering. The official Army Green listing seen is PLA Pro, a different polymer; do not substitute Army Green PLA or ASA for PETG. No ASIN or GTIN was verified in the checked sources.
