Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A compact 6-inch greyscale e-reader with physical page-turn buttons, a microSD card slot and broad format support, aimed at readers who want to sidestep format lock-in. Check the price first: it sits close to its own sharper, waterproof sibling, the Verse Pro, which reviewers prefer.

Strengths

  • The microSD slot takes cards up to 128 GB, which no Kindle in this class offers.
  • It reads 25 book and graphic formats without conversion, including AZW3, CBR, CBZ and Adobe DRM EPUB and PDF.
  • Reviewers single out the page-turn buttons for build quality and rare accidental presses.
  • The SMARTlight frontlight lets you shift colour temperature, warmer at night.
  • Around 50 preloaded fonts, pinch-to-zoom sizing, contrast and saturation controls and extensive key-mapping customization.
  • A system-wide dark mode arrived through a firmware update.

Weaknesses

  • The 212 ppi Carta panel is not Carta 1200, so text is less crisp than on the Verse Pro’s 300 ppi screen.
  • The base model has no Bluetooth, no speaker, no text-to-speech and no audiobook support.
  • It is not waterproof, unlike the IPX8 Verse Pro.
  • The Linux interface is dated, and the review notes it can feel sluggish.
  • The interface supports a fixed set of apps; there is no app installation.

Storage and formats

The microSD slot is the reason to look at this reader. It accepts cards up to 128 GB, and the device handles 25 book and graphic formats without conversion: ACSM, AZW, AZW3, CBR, CBZ, CHM, DJVU, DOC and DOCX, EPUB with and without Adobe DRM, FB2, HTM and HTML, MOBI, PDF with and without DRM, PRC, RTF and TXT, plus JPEG, BMP, PNG and TIFF images. Adobe DRM support means books bought elsewhere and public-library loans loaded through Adobe Digital Editions open on the device. Comics work too, in CBR and CBZ.

The PocketBook Store itself is a much smaller catalogue than the Kindle or Kobo stores, and regional pricing can differ. PocketBook can change a device’s store region on request using its serial number.

Screen, frontlight and page-turn buttons

The 6-inch Carta panel runs at 758 × 1024 and 212 ppi with 16 levels of greyscale. Good e-Reader’s writer reports the display is Carta but not Carta 1200, which shows up as lower font clarity than the Verse Pro’s 300 ppi panel. Nobody has published a side-by-side sharpness test of this exact model, so treat the resolution figure as the deciding number rather than a measured verdict.

The frontlight is SMARTlight with adjustable colour temperature, so you can warm the light up in the evening. Reviewers praise the physical page-turn buttons as the best in the business, noting good build quality and rare accidental presses, while also mentioning that their bottom-bezel placement takes some getting used to.

PDFs, comics and the app

PDFs are the weak spot. There are also no system-wide speed modes. If your reading is mostly long documents, this is the wrong device.

Ebook reading fares better, and the settings go deep: around 50 preloaded fonts, pinch-to-zoom font resizing, adjustable contrast, saturation and brightness, extensive key-mapping customization, and a system-wide dark mode added by firmware update. The reviewer says these settings features are not matched on other non-Android e-readers.

What the Verse cannot do

The base Verse is a reading-only device in practice. There is no Bluetooth, no built-in speaker, no text-to-speech and no audiobook support, and Good e-Reader gives audiobooks a zero for exactly that reason. The Verse itself has no waterproofing, which the review flags as a clear con. The operating system is Linux with a fixed set of apps, and no apps can be installed.

Reliability and repairs

The Verse is a sealed e-reader with no user-serviceable parts. No repair or parts channel was found for this model, and there is no published failure rate for the reported glitches, so treat them as an annoyance rather than a defect. PocketBook publishes warranty terms and a firmware and support page for the device. Measured battery life under typical reading load and real charge times have not been published.

Is it worth it?

Good e-Reader listed the PocketBook Verse at $129.99 at the time of its review, and US retailer listings observed for both colour variants showed $139.00. At that level the Verse sits close to the Verse Pro, which adds a 300 ppi Carta 1200 screen, IPX8 waterproofing, Bluetooth, audio and 16 GB of storage on the same dual core 1 GHz platform. That reviewer’s verdict is that the Verse Pro is the better buy.

The honest case for the Verse is narrower: 186 g, genuinely good page-turn buttons, a microSD slot, broad format support including Adobe DRM and comics, and a frontlight with adjustable colour temperature. Buy it for card expansion and format freedom. If you want screen sharpness, waterproofing, audio or better PDF handling, spend more or buy differently.

Which model this is

This page covers the base PocketBook Verse, the 6-inch greyscale reader announced in 2023, sold in the US as Misty Grey and Bright Blue. The US listing for the Misty Grey colour is ASIN B0CGVWV9Z2. Do not confuse it with the Verse Pro, the Verse Pro Color or the Verse Lite: they differ in screen, storage, waterproofing and connectivity, and this page does not cover them.
