Summary

A compact 42.3 lb tabletop pellet grill with a two-tier 256 sq in cooking area, a 5 lb hopper and a slide-plate Flame Broiler for direct-flame searing. The name is the trap: Pit Boss sells several different “150” tabletop grills, and only the 5 lb hopper identifies this one.

Strengths

  • The two-tier grate makes a small cooker behave like a bigger one, and the upper rack adds real space.
  • The Flame Broiler slide plate gives direct-flame searing that most pellet grills this size lack.
  • Pit Boss backs it with a documented 5-year parts and electrical warranty.
  • Exact-model replacement parts are easy to find, including the lid handle.
  • At 42.3 lb it is light enough to move and small enough for a patio or tailgate.
  • Automatic start-up and cool-down cycles keep everyday use simple.

Weaknesses

  • No instrumented test of this exact model exists; the nearest independent tests covered 7 lb-hopper or battery siblings.
  • Exact-model owner evidence is thin: a couple of forum anecdotes, not a failure rate.
  • The heating element sits lower in this chassis than in full-size Pit Boss grills, and owners say pellets in the auger can ignite.
  • The “150” badge is shared by at least six different Pit Boss tabletop models, so listings are easy to mix up.
  • The only readily available manual is the EU/UK edition rated 220–240 V; the US wattage is not published.
  • One owner reports the meat probe was not in the box, against the manufacturer’s parts list.

What it is and how it cooks

The PB150PPS is the small end of Pit Boss’s tabletop line: 24.7 × 19.1 × 14.9 in, 42.3 lb, with a latch-locking lid, two side handles and 256 sq in of porcelain-coated steel grate split between a main grate and an upper rack. The upper rack is what makes a small cooker act bigger; testers of the 7 lb sibling fit a full rack of ribs plus sausages on it.

A dial-in digital control board covers 180–500 °F, a fan forces convection, and start-up and cool-down are automatic. The Flame Broiler slide plate opens the fire pot for direct-flame searing that Pit Boss rates to 1,000 °F. Nobody has measured that number on this unit, and nobody has measured this unit’s heat-up time, hold accuracy or pellet burn rate either. Pit Boss itself says a +/- 25 °F swing around the set point is normal controller behavior, and the igniter stays hot only for the first five minutes. Prime the auger on first use and whenever the hopper empties, or the igniter times out before pellets reach the fire pot.

Which model this is

This page covers the Pit Boss Mahogany Series 150PPS Tabletop Wood Pellet Grill, Pit Boss SKU 10697, also sold as model 10786 / 10-786 and as Best Buy SKU 6509441. Pit Boss sells at least six distinct “150” tabletop grills that share the same 256 sq in cooking area and 180–500 °F range: the 5 lb PB150PPS here, the 7 lb PB150PPG Copper Series, the 7 lb FB2 Series 150 with a meat probe and cover, the Pro Series II Portable 150, the battery-powered PB150PPB / PB150PSB, and the Portable Pit Stop 150 Onyx Edition. The 5 lb hopper is the one spec that isolates this model, so match on PB150PPS plus the 5 lb hopper before buying. The Amazon listing referenced for this product is ASIN B08Y66479M.

Pellets, parts and upkeep

Pellets are the consumable and they are not in the box. Pit Boss sells its own 20 lb Freedom Blend hardwood pellets at $12.99–$19.99, and humidity-degraded pellets expand and jam the auger, so keep the hopper dry. Grease-pan liners for tabletop Pit Boss grills run $3.49–$4.99 for a 6-pack. A replacement lid handle is $42.49 aftermarket, down from $49.99. A meat probe, if the box lacks one, is an extra purchase.

Maintenance is simple but real: clean or check the burn pot before every cook, prime the auger whenever the hopper runs dry, clean the temperature sensor, and disconnect power before any service. The failure mode documented across the brand is hopper smoke-back and auger burn-back, driven by pellet dust, by shutting down from a high set temperature without ramping down, by an unlevel unit and by a degraded firepot. The cheap mitigations: keep the hopper full and its lid closed, ramp the dial to 200 °F for a few minutes before shutdown, keep the unit level or canted so the firepot sits below the auger, and clear dust from the auger.

One exact-model caution is the low heating element, which owners say can let pellets sitting in the auger ignite; the forum fix is to raise the hopper side about 1/2 inch, though the owner who relayed it admitted they did not know if it was correct. Pit Boss’s warranty page grants 5 years on all parts and 5 years on electrical, with proof of purchase required, while the manual disclaims any performance warranty. What owners report about warranty turnaround is negative at the brand level.

Is it worth it?

Under $130 it is strong value: nothing else at that level pairs a 256 sq in two-tier pellet grill, direct-flame searing and a 5-year all-parts warranty. Between $131 and $180, including the $176 street reference for this SKU, it stays a good buy for a first pellet grill, a patio cooker or a tailgate unit. At Pit Boss’s own $219.99 it is fair, and at Best Buy’s $259.00 it is weak, because a larger 7 lb-hopper sibling costs less at Menards after rebate ($249.99, or $222.49 with the 11% rebate). Above $260 there is little reason to pick it over the rest of Pit Boss’s line. Sifty shows the tabletop Pit Boss class from $210.99 across four sellers, and a Canadian retailer snapshot shows $113.25, so street prices for this SKU have been wide.
