Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A compact plug-in fountain for cats and small dogs: 60 oz capacity, a stainless bowl and tower, a soft bubbling flow and dual carbon + foam filtration. Check your pump before you buy — no independent lab has tested this exact model, and owners who keep them long term report the motor as the part that gives out.

Strengths

  • The stainless parts are top-rack dishwasher safe, which most plastic fountains cannot match.
  • The soft bubbling flow suits shy or timid cats, and owners report their cats take to it quickly.
  • The footprint is small for a 60 oz fountain, so it fits a corner rather than a shelf.
  • The pump is a user-removable, user-cleanable unit, better serviceability than sealed-pump designs.
  • Replacement filters and a replacement pump are sold directly by PetSafe.
  • Several animals can drink from the tower and bowl at the same time.

Weaknesses

  • Pump longevity is the recurring owner complaint: an owner who bought eight units reports the motor burns out, and others call replacement pumps poor.
  • Noise is unverified and contradicted — at least one owner says the pump is too loud to leave running at night.
  • Slime and biofilm build up fast enough that PetSafe keeps a dedicated support article for this model.
  • PetSafe has not published a measured flow rate, noise figure or pump-life number for it.
  • No independent lab has tested this exact model; the guides located do not recommend it.
  • The US page does not print the replacement part numbers inline, so match them by number before ordering.

Cleaning and running costs

Maintenance is the real job. Wash every part before first use, take the pump apart and clean it every two weeks, and replace the carbon filter every 2-4 weeks and the foam filter every 1-2 months. The owner’s manual says not to attempt repairs on the pump, so a dead motor means a replacement rather than a fix.

Ownership cost is filters first, pump second. PetSafe sells the foam filter 2-pack PAC00-13711 at $6.99, a 12-pack of carbon filters PAC00-16151 at $13.99, and the replacement pump PAC00-13206 at $20.99 (PetSafe US, 2026). A replacement pump is sold by PetSafe and is a genuine plus for long-term ownership, even if some owners are unimpressed with the ones they bought.

Noise and flow

PetSafe markets the Seaside as quiet and publishes no decibel figure. The owner reports split: some say it is quiet enough to leave on, and at least one says it is too loud to run at night and unplugs it after dark. Treat the noise claim as unverified rather than settled.

PetSafe’s own troubleshooting lists low water level, a poorly seated tower gasket, pump and impeller film buildup, and dirty filters as the reasons the flow weakens or stops. That is a first-party admission that flow problems are routine, not exceptional, so plan on top-ups and pump cleaning.

Leaks and slime

A good share of reported leaks turn out to be pet splash, not a seal failure. PetSafe’s article first checks for energetic drinking, then the rubber cap on the bowl stem and cord, then real damage. Check the splash pattern before you look for a crack.

Biofilm is the other familiar issue: PetSafe maintains a dedicated “Seaside Stainless Fountain is Slimy” article for this model, which says the buildup is recognised and common. It is why the pump and filters get their short cleaning intervals.

Is it worth it?

At about $44 direct from PetSafe (2026), with some US retailers listing it lower, it is a fair mid-range compact fountain for cats and small dogs. Above roughly $50 it gets weak unless the compact 60 oz footprint and the stainless construction specifically matter to you, since competing stainless fountains have longer owner histories and more independent coverage. The strongest practical case for it is not quiet — that is unverified and contradicted — but the compact size, dishwasher-safe stainless parts and parts you can actually buy.

Which model this is

This page covers the PetSafe Seaside Stainless Pet Fountain, US model number PWW00-17099, sold for cats and small dogs. Regional variants of the same design carry different model numbers and part numbers — PWW17-17182 in Canada, PWW19-17100 in the Netherlands, PWW17-17330 in Australia. The US/Canada replacement numbers are carbon PAC00-13906 and foam PAC00-13711, and the US replacement pump is PAC00-13206; buy the numbers that match your market. Do not confuse it with the similarly named Drinkwell Seascape, a 70 oz ceramic fountain. The Amazon listing is ASIN B088RLTP1Q.
