Summary

The OXO Brew 8-Cup (SKU 8722000) is a drip coffee maker with BetterBrew temperature, volume and time control, a Rainmaker showerhead and an in-box podless single-serve accessory, poured into a glass carafe on a smart-timed warming plate. Check the carafe before you buy: this glass-carafe model is not the thermal-carafe 8-Cup that independent testers measured, so its brew numbers are unproven.

Strengths

  • BetterBrew controls temperature, volume and time, targeting the SCA-preferred 194 F to 205 F range.
  • The Rainmaker showerhead and integrated bloom cycle spread water evenly over the grounds.
  • The podless single-serve accessory is in the box, for 2-4 cup brews into the carafe or a mug.
  • Family owners call it quick and convenient, with coffee that tastes good and can brew straight into a mug.
  • A two-year warranty and a documented descaling routine back the machine.
  • The compact body is designed to fit under cabinets when not in use.

Weaknesses

  • The glass carafe and warming plate replace the older model’s vacuum thermal carafe, so coffee slowly degrades the longer it sits.
  • No instrumented test of SKU 8722000 exists; the brew numbers people quote belong to the older 8718800.
  • Some owners report uneven extraction, and TechGearLab saw visible holes where water contacted the grounds.
  • There is no programmable or delay-brew start.
  • The filter basket does not sit flat on a counter, making one-handed filling awkward.
  • The glass carafe is more fragile long-term than stainless.

Which model this is

This is SKU 8722000, the glass-carafe 8-Cup with the podless single-serve accessory and a warming plate, ASIN B0FG8HNWYJ. It is not the older SKU 8718800, the 2020 thermal-carafe 8-Cup that CNET, TechGearLab, Serious Eats and Wirecutter tested. The two look similar on the shelf but differ most in the carafe: 8722000 uses glass on a hot plate, 8718800 a double-wall vacuum thermal carafe with no warming plate. OXO also sells a 9-Cup (8710100) and a 12-Cup with podless single-serve, neither of which is this product.

Brewing and test evidence

Everything measured about “the OXO 8-Cup” was measured on the older thermal-carafe 8718800, not this glass-carafe model. CNET timed a full pot at 6 min 8 s and traced ground temperatures from 189.4 F at two minutes up to 199.3 F at four minutes, with extraction yields of 25% at 64 g of coffee and 19% at 69.6 g; its thermal carafe held coffee above 150 F for 3 h 45 min. TechGearLab measured an average brew temperature of 193.6 F, an average brew time of 5 min 22 s and a 1400 W power draw, and ranked the older machine 74 overall. None of that transfers cleanly to 8722000, which has a different heating and holding design. OXO’s 194 F to 205 F figure for this SKU is a claim, not a measurement.

Warming plate and heat retention

The move from a vacuum thermal carafe to a glass carafe on a hot plate is the biggest functional difference from the tested model. OXO’s own copy for the older machine concedes a heating element under the carafe can sometimes produce a bitter, burned or condensed brew, and Coffee Gear HQ makes the same point: a warming plate slowly degrades flavor the longer coffee sits, which the thermal carafe avoids. The glass carafe is also described as more fragile long-term than stainless. In practice the plate runs two hours after a half carafe and four hours after a full one, and you can extend it by pressing the full- or half-carafe button after it shuts off.

Filters, descaling and running costs

The family uses flat-bottom basket filters in the carafe and a Kalita Wave filter for the single-serve accessory; sources disagree on the Wave size, with 185 in CNET and OXO’s 8-Cup manual and 155 in Seattle Coffee Gear’s guide. Descaling is not optional: the clean-button light comes on every 90 cycles, the clean cycle runs about 25 minutes, and the manual states plainly that the machine will not work properly if it is not descaled regularly and that the warranty is voided if descaling is not carried out as instructed. Regular ownership costs are those filters, OXO’s descaling solution (14 fl oz, enough for 3 uses), coffee, and a burr grinder if you grind fresh.

Is it worth it?

OXO lists SKU 8722000 at $179.99 and Walmart shows it at $179.97 (October 2026). That is only $40 below the older thermal-carafe 8718800 at $219.99, and you give up the vacuum insulation that every instrumented test of the family was run on. Around $140 or below this becomes reasonable; at $166 to $180 it is weak, because you are paying for a machine whose temperature and brew-time claims no outlet has tested. Above $180 the 8718800 is the safer buy. If single-serve out of the box matters more to you than how the last cup tastes two hours later, this machine makes sense; if you brew full carafes and care about heat retention, spend the extra on the thermal model.
