Summary
A baby monitor bundle that pairs a 1080p Owlet Cam 2 with the FDA-cleared Dream Sock pulse oximeter, built for parents who want vitals tracking alongside video. Check your Wi-Fi first: the system runs on 2.4 GHz only and will not join a 5 GHz network.
Strengths
- The Dream Sock is the only baby-monitor component with FDA De Novo clearance as a Class II device.
- Silent noise cancellation keeps the monitor near-silent at 36 dBa with sound activation.
- Core monitoring works without a mandatory subscription.
- Baby Gear Lab ranked it first of 13 video monitors with 86/100.
- Two-way talk, picture-in-picture and room sensors are all included.
- HSA/FSA eligible.
Weaknesses
- The camera has no remote pan or tilt.
- There is no dedicated parent display; monitoring is phone-only.
- Connectivity problems recur across reviews, from QR setup to dropped alerts.
- The sock and base station connect over Bluetooth with a range of only about 100 ft.
- A baby’s fidget can shift the sock and trigger a false alarm.

What the Dream Sock does
The Dream Sock is the piece you cannot get elsewhere: an FDA De Novo cleared Class II device for over-the-counter use, fitting healthy infants 1-18 months and 6-30 lbs. It streams pulse rate and oxygen readings to the base station and the Owlet Dream app; when a reading leaves a preset range the base flashes red and sounds an alarm.
Alerts are the weak point. Its expected-reliability score was 7.8/10, and owners on r/NewParents describe difficulty readings, the charging base blasting lullabies for no reason, and alerts triggered by a baby’s fidget.
Camera and app
The Cam 2 shoots 1080p HD through a 130-degree wide-angle lens with 4x zoom and auto-adjusting night vision. Baby Gear Lab rated daytime video better than average with accurate colors, sound quality 9.0/10, and noise cancellation at 36 dBa ambient, topping out at 103 dBa. Night vision improved over the first Cam but keeps a bright center spot and darkened edges.
There is no parent display, so everything runs through the Owlet Dream app on iOS 14+ or Android 7+. Picture-in-picture, two-way talk, room temperature and humidity sensors, sound activation and crying detection are built in. Reports from the App Store note a flaky app and pop-ups about a child being too old for the sock.
Setup and connectivity
The system needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and will not join a 5 GHz network; it also cannot connect to open or public networks, so hotel and travel use is impractical. The sock talks to the base station over Bluetooth at roughly 100 ft, which is the limit for most homes.
Setup complaints recur. Metro found the QR-code setup frustrating and the connection too unreliable, while Baby Gear Lab called connectivity the main reliability culprit. A Best Buy owner could not get the camera to read the QR code at all. Nobody has published a failure rate, so treat the connection trouble as a known annoyance rather than a defect you can predict.
Running costs and value
Baby Gear Lab lists it at $400, and Consumer Reports puts it at $399-400. Core monitoring needs no subscription, and the optional Owlet360 tier runs $0-$9.99 a month.
The Cam 2 is sold separately at $129.99 for video-only monitoring, and CHOICE lists the Cam 2 at AUD $249 in Australia. It is HSA/FSA eligible, carries a 2 year warranty and a 90-day refund or replacement policy.
