Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A 1.75 mm silk-finish PLA filament in 36 colors, sold in 1 kg spools, with a published dimensional tolerance of +/-0.02 mm and a detailed technical data sheet. Check print settings and dry storage before buying: owners report stringing, mid-print clogging and first-layer adhesion problems, and the glossy blend is too brittle for functional parts.

Strengths

  • Glossy, mirror-like finish hides layer lines without post-processing.
  • Good color saturation, including dual-color angle-dependent shift.
  • Vacuum-sealed packaging with desiccant; arrives dry.
  • Neat spool winding; many users report no tangles.
  • Works reliably on common FDM printers when settings are dialed in.
  • 36 color options including gradients and UV-reactive.

Weaknesses

  • Persistent stringing even after drying.
  • Mid-print clogging or jamming, especially on Bowden and high-speed machines.
  • First-layer adhesion problems; peeling without a hotter bed.
  • Moisture sensitivity: popping, bubbling, more stringing in humid air.
  • Brittleness; thin features snap; not for functional parts.
  • Some colors differ from listing photos.

Full research notes and sources

OVERTURE Silk PLA is a decorative filament whose main selling point is a high-gloss surface that hides layer lines without post-processing, available in 36 colors including gradients, dual-color co-extruded and UV-reactive variants. Its TDS (v5.1) is unusually detailed for a consumer filament, reporting density 1.19 g/cm3, melt index 12.8 g/10 min, melting point 153 C, tensile strength 55.2 MPa (X-Y) and 18.9 MPa (Z), elongation 3.5%, and notched Charpy 2.87 kJ/m2, measured at nozzle 205 C, 60 mm/s, bed 40 C, 100% infill. The Z-direction tensile strength being about one-third of X-Y shows the anisotropy typical of silk blends; the additives that create the gloss reduce layer adhesion and increase brittleness, so this filament is not suited to functional or load-bearing parts. Slower speeds and a hotter nozzle give more gloss; faster speeds give a more matte finish.

Stringing, clogging and adhesion

Owner reports are mixed but consistent in theme: the finish is praised, while stringing, mid-print clogging or jamming, first-layer adhesion problems and moisture sensitivity recur. One Prusa MK4 owner dried filament 8 hours at 55 C with little improvement in stringing; a Prusa MK3 owner cleared jamming by improving hotend cooling (heat creep). Vacuum sealing and winding quality are generally praised, with occasional bind reports on high-speed printers.

Moisture and storage

Silk PLA absorbs moisture quickly. Owners describe popping and bubbling and increased stringing after exposure to humid air; drying at 45-50 C for 4-6 hours is commonly recommended, and the TDS specifies 50 C for 7 hours. Store the spool in an airtight bag with desiccant; vacuum sealing and winding quality are generally praised. The spool is cardboard.

Durability and value

Silk additives make filament and prints more brittle; thin features snap, and the filament is not suitable for functional or structural parts. It is also not recommended for outdoor or UV-exposed parts, except the UV-reactive colors, which glow under UV. At roughly $17-20 per 1 kg spool from the manufacturer, with a 30-day warranty and a broad color range, OVERTURE Silk PLA is reasonable value for decorative printing, provided the buyer accepts careful calibration and dry storage. Manufacturer (overture3d.com) lists Silk PLA at sale prices in the $16.99-$19.99 range per 1 kg spool, with compare-at prices up to $21.99-$26.99 depending on color; dual-color and gradient variants are typically priced higher, for example $18.69-$24.99 on the manufacturer site. Recurring costs are drying electricity and time, storage such as a dry box and desiccant, and replacement nozzles if clogs occur; there is no subscription or vendor lock-in. No earlier price records beyond current listings were found, and prices are dynamic and vary by color and seller. The warranty is 30 days from date of receipt, covering defects in materials and workmanship, with exclusions for excessive wear, abuse or neglect, improper use, attempted repair, unauthorized reseller purchase, and claims outside the 30-day period; contact service@overture3d.com with order number, product name, quantity and batch, description, photos and shipping address.

Which model this is

This page covers OVERTURE Silk PLA filament, brand OVERTURE, a PLA-based silk-finish 3D printing filament sold in 36 color variants (single colors, gradients, dual-color co-extruded, UV-reactive). The Fresh Red single-color 1 kg variant is ASIN B0BN8R9FSN. Do not merge with Overture’s standard PLA, Matte PLA, Shimmer PLA, PLA+ or PLA Professional lines, which have different formulations and TDS values. Manufacturer is Overture 3D Technologies LLC, Houston, TX.
