OVERTURE Silk PLA: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-25
Summary
OVERTURE Silk PLA is a 1.75 mm silk-finish PLA filament in 36 colors with a published tolerance of +/-0.02 mm, sold in 1 kg spools. Owners report recurring stringing, mid-print clogging and first-layer adhesion problems, plus moisture sensitivity; the glossy blend is too brittle for functional parts. At roughly $17-20 per 1 kg spool from the manufacturer with a 30-day warranty, it is reasonable value for decorative printing if you accept careful calibration and dry storage.
Common problems and fixes
- Stringing — owners report persistent stringing even after drying; one Prusa MK4 owner dried filament 8 h at 55 C with little improvement. Workaround: increase retraction by 0.5 mm and lower temperature after the first layers, with slower speeds. Not covered by the 30-day warranty when caused by settings. [3][4][5]
- Mid-print clogging or jamming — filament stops extruding mid-print on Ender 3 v2, Prusa MK3 and Neptune 4 Plus; one owner resolved it by improving hotend cooling (heat creep). Cold pulls and a clean nozzle help. [5]
- Moisture sensitivity — popping and bubbling with increased stringing after humid air exposure. Drying at 45-50 C for 4-6 h is commonly recommended; the TDS specifies 50 C for 7 h. Store in an airtight bag with desiccant. [3][5][7]
- Brittleness — silk additives make filament and prints more brittle; thin features snap. Not suited to functional or structural parts, or outdoor/UV-exposed parts (except UV-reactive colors). [3][7]
- High-speed spool binds — occasional feed issues on Bambu A1 and similar high-speed printers. [3]
Parts and consumables
No replaceable parts or consumables reported.
Yearly running cost
A typical owner’s annual cost is not quantified in the sources. Recurring costs are drying electricity and time, storage such as a dry box and desiccant, and occasional replacement nozzles after clogs; there is no subscription or vendor lock-in. Not enough data for an annual dollar figure.
When it is a good buy
Manufacturer site lists Silk PLA at sale prices of $16.99-$19.99 per 1 kg spool, with compare-at prices up to $21.99-$26.99 depending on color (October 2026). Dual-color and gradient variants run $18.69-$24.99 (October 2026). [1]
