Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A 1.75 mm PLA filament formulated for a frosted matte finish that hides layer lines on visible prints. Check your storage before you buy: matte PLA is more moisture-sensitive than standard PLA and needs drying before use.

Strengths

  • Frosted matte texture scatters light and hides layer lines on visible parts.
  • Strong bed adhesion across common printers and surfaces.
  • Reliable, tangle-free spooling with low warping and minimal clogging.
  • Recyclable cardboard spool.
  • Works with standard PLA profiles on Ender 3, Bambu P1S and similar machines.
  • Published ISO mechanical and physical data in TDS v5.1.

Weaknesses

  • More moisture-sensitive than standard PLA, with popping and stringing on wet spools.
  • Thin printed sections can be more brittle than other PLAs.
  • Cardboard spool may not feed smoothly in enclosed systems such as Bambu AMS.
  • No RFID for smart filament systems.
  • Matte white reported as stringier and less consistent than matte black.
  • Warranty terms conflict between a 30-day policy and a 2-year marketing claim.

Surface finish and printing

The matte formulation’s main advantage is cosmetic: it scatters light and hides layer lines, so parts look more like finished prototypes than typical glossy PLA prints. Owners report it prints cleanly on Ender 3, Bambu Lab X1C and Prusa MK4 with little tuning, and one Bambu forum owner ran roughly a dozen spools without issues. The TDS lists nozzle 190-230 C, bed 50-70 C, speed 60-300 mm/s, plus retraction distance 1-3 mm and retraction speed 30-60 mm/s.

Moisture and storage

Overture Matte PLA is reported as more humidity-sensitive than standard PLA, with popping, stringing and gaps on wet spools. Drying at 50 C for 7 or more hours resolves most issues, and longer drying may be needed for wet matte spools. Keep the spool in a vacuum-sealed bag with desiccant between uses and store it away from humidity. Shelf life is 1 year for unopened spools with proper storage.

Durability and thin sections

Thin sections can be more brittle than other PLAs, and matte white has been reported as stringier and less consistent than matte black. The cardboard spool may not feed smoothly in enclosed systems such as Bambu AMS, sometimes requiring adjustment. Batch-to-batch variation is also reported, with one Prusa owner finding a second spool behaved better than the first.

Warranty and support

Overture’s warranty policy page offers a 30-day warranty from date of receipt covering defects in materials and workmanship, excluding wear, abuse, improper use, unauthorized resellers and items outside the 30-day period. Contact service@overture3d.com with order number, product name, quantity, batch number, description, photos and shipping address. Rely on the 30-day policy unless your order page states otherwise.

Overture sells 1 kg of Matte PLA for $16.99 on sale against a $20.99 compare-at price, with 2-packs at $32.99 and 4-packs at $59.99 (Overture, 2026). At that price, with published ISO mechanical data and an included magnetic build plate, the filament is good value for cosmetic and display work where surface finish matters. Value drops for functional parts under load or in humid storage, where brittleness and moisture sensitivity matter more. Polymaker PolyTerra PLA is a community alternative mentioned by owners for matte finish.

Which model this is

This page covers OVERTURE Matte PLA, 1.75 mm, 1 kg spools, sold in 30+ colors including a Carbon Fiber Black color. The TDS is version 5.1, dated July 2024 / August 2024, and contains two data blocks: a standard Matte PLA block and a Carbon Fiber block. The product page does not state which block applies to the Carbon Fiber Black color, so treat the standard block as the default for plain Matte PLA colors. Do not confuse it with Overture High Speed PLA, Easy PLA, Rock PLA, Silk PLA or Matte PLA Gradient. Manufacturer is Overture 3D (Overture 3D Technologies LLC, Houston, TX).
