OVERTURE Matte PLA: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-25
Summary
Owners most often report moisture-related popping and stringing on wet spools, brittleness in thin sections, and feeding trouble with the cardboard spool in enclosed systems. Filament runs about $17/kg direct, so annual cost scales with usage plus storage and drying gear. It is a good buy for cosmetic and display prints at or below about $17/kg direct, less so for functional parts under load.
Common problems and fixes
- Moisture sensitivity / popping, stringing and gaps on wet spools — matte PLA is reported as more humidity-sensitive than standard PLA; drying at 50 C for 7 or more hours resolves most cases, and longer drying may be needed for wet matte spools. Store the spool in a vacuum-sealed bag with desiccant between uses. Covered by warranty only if a material defect is shown; storage-related damage is excluded. [1][7][10][11][13]
- Brittleness in thin sections — thin printed sections can be more brittle than other PLAs, a material characteristic rather than a defect. Work around it with thicker walls or a tougher filament for load-bearing parts. [3][10]
- Cardboard spool feeding in enclosed systems — the cardboard spool may not feed smoothly in systems such as Bambu AMS, sometimes requiring adjustment. [3]
- Batch-to-batch variation — one Prusa owner found a second spool behaved better than the first; matte white is reported as stringier and less consistent than matte black. [7][11]
- Uneven winding and damaged packaging on delivery — some batches are reported with slightly uneven winding, and occasional damaged packaging on delivery. [3][6]
- Warranty terms conflict — the warranty policy page states 30 days from receipt, while a third-party listing claims 2 years on the Matte line and the site promotes lifetime 5-star support. Rely on the 30-day policy unless your order page states otherwise. [6][8]
Parts and consumables
- Filament (1 kg spool) (no part number published) — $16.99 on sale against a $20.99 compare-at price (Overture, 2026); consumed per print, with no fixed replacement interval. [1]
Yearly running cost
Not enough data for a single typical yearly total. Filament is about $17/kg direct, so annual cost scales with usage; desiccant, an optional dryer and storage containers are extra and are not priced in the sources. [1][6]
When it is a good buy
At about $17/kg direct, with published ISO mechanical data and an included magnetic build plate, it is good value for cosmetic and display work where surface finish matters. Value drops for functional parts under load or in humid storage. Multi-pack pricing works out near $15-16/kg. [1][6] Better choices in specific cases: Polymaker PolyTerra PLA when matte finish and humidity tolerance matter more; standard PLA or PLA+ for functional parts under load. [1][6][7]
