Summary
A mid-range smart electric toothbrush with five brushing modes, a three-color pressure sensor and Bluetooth app coaching, for buyers who want Oral-B’s iO cleaning action without paying for a display. Check the brush-head cost before you buy: iO heads cost more than standard Oral-B heads and need replacing every three months.
Strengths
- Five modes, including Intense Clean, which first arrived on the iO5.
- Real-time pressure coaching and Position Detection that guide you zone by zone.
- Bristles are softer than the Oral-B Pro 1000, which helps with sensitive gums.
- Quieter motor than the Pro 1000 in CNET’s testing.
- The app tracks how and where you brush as you go.
- A hard travel case comes in the box.
Weaknesses
- CNET’s testing found battery life got worse with use: “the more I used this brush, the more I had to charge it”.
- Smart-toothbrush apps tend to be buggy, per Wirecutter’s testing of the category.
- Replacement heads cost more than standard Oral-B heads and need changing every three months.
- No interactive display, Gum Care mode or Smart Adapt Mode — those start higher in the line.
- The junction between the brush head and handle needs cleaning daily, a complaint some reviewers raise.
- Battery life is an Oral-B design estimate, not a measured guarantee.

App and position detection
The iO5 is the first iO model to connect to the Oral-B app over Bluetooth, and the app tracks how and where you brush in real time across six zones. Position Detection reports up to 94% average coverage. The handle shows modes with LED icons rather than a full display, so if you want a screen on the brush you need to move up to the iO6. Wirecutter’s testing of the similar iO6 found position detection “accurate in our limited test runs” and the pressure sensor more effective than the Pro 1000’s audible version, but it also warns that smart toothbrush apps “tend to be buggy”, so do not buy this only for the app.
Battery life
Oral-B rates the battery at about two weeks of twice-daily, two-minute brushing, and the iO4/5/6 are meant to be charged overnight. CNET’s review flagged the opposite direction over time: “the more I used this brush, the more I had to charge it”, a sign of battery degradation rather than a measured failure rate. Nobody has published charge-cycle data, so treat the two-week figure as a design estimate.
Brush heads and running costs
Every iO head fits every iO handle, but iO heads do not fit the older Oral-B Pro or Genius handles. Oral-B says to change the head every three months, or sooner if the bristles fray, and the indicator bristles fade when it is time. That is the real ownership cost: a two-pack of iO Gentle Care heads is $29.99 from Oral-B, CNET lists a two-pack at $37.50, and Wirecutter puts iO heads at about $7 each in 8-packs, up to $15 each. Changing every three months works out to roughly $60–120 a year. Wirecutter notes iO heads cost more than double standard Oral-B Pro heads. Some reviewers also say you need to clean the junction between the head and the handle daily, a design shared with the iO6.
Is it worth it?
At Oral-B’s $119.99, the iO5 is the least expensive route into an app-connected iO brush. The iO3 and iO4 sell for around $90–100 and clean the same way without Bluetooth, so the premium buys the app, Position Detection and Intense Clean mode. Above about $130 the iO6, at around $160, adds an interactive display and Gum Care mode, and Wirecutter calls it the better value in the line. Trusted Reviews reported the iO5 at £79.99 in December 2025, down from £280, which shows how far it discounts outside the US.
Which model this is
This page covers the Oral-B iO Series 5 (iO5), the US model sold in Matte Black and Matte White. The iO lineup runs from the iO2 through the iO10, and this is the first model with Bluetooth and the Intense Clean mode; it has no interactive display, Gum Care mode or Smart Adapt Mode. All iO brush heads are cross-compatible with all iO handles, but iO heads do not fit the older Oral-B Pro or Genius handles. The US listing is ASIN B0B5HR8HX8. Do not confuse it with the iO3 or iO4, which share the cleaning action without the app.
