Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A mid-range iO handle with a color in-handle display, a three-color pressure sensor and Bluetooth app tracking, built on the same motor as the rest of the iO line. Check the charger before buying: the supplied unit runs on 110-130 V only and takes up to 12 hours, and it is not compatible with Oral-B’s magnetic fast charger.

Strengths

  • The color in-handle display makes mode changes obvious and is the feature the specialist tester calls out for day-to-day usability.
  • The three-color pressure sensor shows when you press too hard, and the brush eases off automatically.
  • Cleaning is on par with the rest of the iO range, which shares this motor.
  • Bluetooth pairs with the Oral-B app for six-zone position tracking.
  • The box includes a hard travel case, and a 30-day money-back guarantee backs the purchase.

Weaknesses

  • The supplied charger is slow at up to 12 hours, and it runs on 110-130 V only, so it is not a travel charger for 230 V countries.
  • Position tracking is coarse at six zones, so the app will count a zone as cleaned even if you stay on one surface.
  • The tester suspects the display wakes on nearby movement and drains the battery.
  • The UK review found no automatic shut-off at the end of a mode’s timed cycle.
  • Some owners report needing firm pressure to turn the sensor’s pressure light green.

What the modes actually do

All iO models except the entry iO2 share the same brush motor and clean equally, and the specialist tester says brushing time and technique matter more than the mode you select. Intense mode will not necessarily remove more plaque, and the daily clean mode can whiten teeth. So the iO6’s case over the cheaper iO3 is the display and the app feedback, not cleaning power. Relative to the iO5, the iO6 swaps Super Sensitive for Gum Care, so Sensitive is the gentlest mode here.

Charging and travel

The supplied charger is the older 2-pin adapter hardwired into the base, good for 110-130 V only, and it takes up to 12 hours to fill the handle. Oral-B states the iO6 is not compatible with the magnetic fast charger, which arrives with the iO7 and does the job in about 3 hours on 100-240 V. If you travel abroad or want a quick turnaround, that is the reason to step up a model.

Brush heads, running costs and reliability

Heads are meant to be replaced every 3 months, and Oral-B lists the iO Ultimate Clean at $29.99 for two, $49.99 for six and $64.99 for nine (Oral-B, 2026-10-04), with Subscribe & Save 20% available. That works out to roughly $60 a year and about $180 over three years at the two-pack price. The specialist site puts the approximate three-year iO6 cost at $357. Oral-B’s own direct price for the handle was $159.99 against a $240 list and a $192 typical selling price quoted by the specialist (Oral-B, 2026-10-04).

Warranty is 2 years from purchase with free replacement of a defective product, and a faulty unit goes back to Oral-B as a whole-unit service including the handle, charger and cord; no user-replaceable battery or parts channel was found. A couple of owners on r/oralbtoothbrush report needing more pressure than expected to get the sensor’s green light, and Oral-B keeps a support page for iO 6-10 brushes that will not connect to the app. Charging and battery faults reported by owners on the subreddit concern iO3 and iO5 units, not the iO6, so they are not evidence about this model.

Is it worth it?

Buy it for the display and app feedback, ideally below Oral-B’s own direct price. The cleaning is the same as the cheaper iO3, so if you do not want the screen, drop down a model; if fast charging or international voltage matters, step up to the iO7. No instrumented test of the exact US iO6 was found, and the one long-form review of the “iO 6” is of the UK-market brush, which faulted it for not switching off by itself at the end of a cycle.

Which model this is

This page covers the Oral-B iO Series 6, ASIN B095FTK7ZY, sold in Black Lava, Grey Opal and Pink Sand. It is not the iO5, which uses Super Sensitive where the iO6 uses Gum Care, and the iO7 and above add the magnetic fast charger, 100-240 V support, more brush heads in the box and, on the iO9 and iO10, 16-zone tracking. The researched US colorways carry UPCs 069055131121 for Black Lava and 069055131053 for Grey Opal.
