Summary

A 2024 Android flagship that pairs a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with a 6.82-inch QHD+ 120 Hz display and a 5,400 mAh battery, still a strong buy at a discount.

Strengths

  • Battery life is genuinely excellent: PCMag measured 18 hours 10 minutes of looping video and Consumer Reports a 45.5-hour lifespan.
  • The 6.82-inch QHD+ panel runs at 1–120 Hz and stays bright; GSMArena measured about 1,155–1,253 nits in bright auto conditions.
  • The 3x periscope telephoto is the lens many owners reach for most and adds reach the OnePlus 11 lacked.
  • Wireless charging returns after its absence on the OnePlus 11, and 80W wired charging refills the phone quickly.
  • The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 keeps day-to-day performance quick, with Geekbench 6 multi-core near 6,810 in PCMag’s test.

Weaknesses

  • IP65 is not IP68, so submersion protection is not guaranteed.
  • The cameras trail the Pixel 8 Pro and Galaxy S24 Ultra, especially in low light.
  • Four OS upgrades and five years of security updates are shorter than the seven years Google and Samsung offer.
  • Android Central measured 58% stability under stress testing, a sign of sustained-load throttling.
  • Green-line OLED faults have been reported on the OnePlus 12, and the “lifetime display warranty” is applied inconsistently.
  • Out-of-warranty repairs are expensive: screen $200, mainboard $410–$433, plus $17.05–$76.77 labor.

Battery and display

PCMag measured 18 hours 10 minutes looping a YouTube video at maximum brightness, Consumer Reports measured a 45.5-hour battery lifespan, and CNET’s three-hour YouTube test ended at 95% remaining. GSMArena’s Active Use Score was 14:11 h, with web browsing and video playback near the top of its charts. Runtime varies with how you use it, but the battery is the part most owners praise.

The display is bright enough for outdoor use. GSMArena measured about 1,155 nits (Natural) and 1,253 nits (Vivid) in bright auto conditions, 794 and 845 nits in manual mode, and a 1.9-nit minimum. PhoneArena measured a 1,120-nit maximum and a 1.8-nit minimum. OnePlus’ 4,500-nit figure is a peak HDR marketing number, not normal-use brightness.

Cameras

The 50MP LYT-808 main, 64MP 3x periscope and 48MP ultrawide are capable in good light, and the 3x optical reach is a clear step up from the OnePlus 11. Only 3x is optical; the higher zoom levels are in-sensor or digital crop.

The low-light results are where the phone gives ground. CNET called the cameras disappointing, with dark night shots and hit-or-miss optical zoom; Tom’s Guide flagged underexposed low-light photos; PCMag rated image quality below the Pixel 8 Pro and Galaxy S24 Ultra. Buyers who shoot a lot after dark should weigh this carefully.

Repairs and running costs

OnePlus sells a 12-month limited warranty with a 15-day return window. Out-of-warranty, the parts are priced in US dollars: screen $200, mainboard $410 for the 12 GB / 256 GB model and $433 for the 16 GB / 512 GB model, main camera $73, ultrawide $27, front camera $25, battery $29, battery cover $50 and adapter $34, with labor from $17.05 to $76.77. A major repair can approach the phone’s discounted price. The battery is non-removable, so replacement is a service job, and there is no microSD slot to add storage later.

A OnePlus-specific caveat is the green-line display defect, reported on the OnePlus 12 in several OnePlus Community and Reddit threads. OnePlus has publicized a “lifetime display warranty” for it in some regions, but reports indicate coverage is applied inconsistently and at least one owner was declined help for an end-of-life model. Verify the policy for your region and model before you rely on it. Owners who depend on eSIM should also confirm their exact variant, since eSIM behaviour varies by SKU.

Is it worth it?

The OnePlus 12 launched in February 2024 at $799.99 for the 12 GB / 256 GB model and $899.99 for the 16 GB / 512 GB model, a $100 increase over the OnePlus 11’s $699 launch price. By 2026 it is a previous-generation phone, superseded by the OnePlus 13, and PCMag’s live buy box listed the 16 GB / 512 GB model at $639.99 via Walmart, well below its launch price.

At roughly $600 or below for the 16 GB / 512 GB model, it is strong value: the battery, display and performance still hold up. Around $650–$750 it is fair if you want the large battery and fast charging and do not need the best camera or the longest support window. Approaching its original $799–$899 pricing it is hard to justify against the OnePlus 13, a discounted Pixel or a Galaxy S-series phone, which offer better cameras and longer support.

Which model this is

This page covers the US OnePlus 12, model CPH2583, in 12 GB / 256 GB and 16 GB / 512 GB, in Flowy Emerald and Silky Black. The North American variant has dual nano-SIM plus eSIM. The global variant is CPH2581.

The Amazon listing for the US model is ASIN B0D2D54Q5M.

Do not merge it with the OnePlus 12R, which shares the “12” name but has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, no wireless charging and a different camera set.
