Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A compact single-serve brewer that takes both K-Cup pods and ground coffee, with four brew styles, a built-in frother and a 56 oz removable reservoir. Check the price before you buy: SharkNinja lists the black PB051 at $89.99, reduced from $129.99, while owner-style reviews describe typical retail of $129.99 to $169.99.

Strengths

  • Takes both K-Cup pods and ground coffee in one compact brewer.
  • Taste of Home named it the favorite single-serve brewer among 14 machines tested.
  • Four brew styles, including iced coffee and a 4 oz specialty concentrate.
  • Built-in fold-away frother handles hot or cold milk.
  • 56 oz removable reservoir and up to 8 in of travel-mug clearance.
  • SharkNinja sells replacement parts such as the pod adapter, reservoir and filter.

Weaknesses

  • Specialty mode is concentrated coffee, not pressure-extracted espresso.
  • The frother is a motorized whisk, not a steam wand; foam quality varies with technique.
  • Brewing is moderately noisy.
  • Several removable parts need regular cleaning; descaling runs 15 to 20 minutes.
  • The reservoir can seat poorly; reseating usually fixes it.
  • Overfilling the ground basket or using too fine a grind risks overflow.

Brew sizes and styles

Pod brews top out at 12 oz while ground-coffee brews run up to 24 oz, so the larger travel-mug sizes need grounds. The Specialty setting makes a 4 oz concentrate for milk drinks; it is not espresso and no pressure spec is given. In Taste of Home’s lab test, a 10 oz K-Cup brew poured a strong, consistent stream with little splash-back and a smooth taste, and a 10 oz iced brew using grounds looked darker and richer. The 4 oz Specialty brew reached 134°F before ice.

Iced coffee and milk drinks

The frother is a motorized whisk that folds away; it makes foam for hot or cold milk but is not café-grade. Taste of Home’s tester saw air bubbles in the foam, possibly from technique. An owner-style review claims café-style foam. The frother can be self-cleaned by running it in water.

Cleaning and running costs

Daily maintenance is rinsing the permanent filter, wiping the frother wand and emptying the drip tray; deeper cleaning uses the built-in cycle with descaling solution about every 3 months, or more often with hard water, taking 15 to 20 minutes. A maintenance reminder light signals descaling. An owner-style review reports a 2-hour auto-off; the manufacturer page does not state it. Ongoing costs run about $0.50 to $1.00 per cup for pods, $0.20 to $0.40 per cup for grounds, no paper filters thanks to the permanent filter, and $10 to $15 of descaling solution every 3 to 6 months. SharkNinja sells accessories and replacement parts including the pod adapter, brew basket, water reservoir, permanent filter, nozzle, cup tray, de-clog tool and storage bin.

SharkNinja lists the black PB051 at $89.99, reduced from $129.99, with free shipping on orders of $99 or more. The owner-style review describes typical retail of $129.99 to $169.99 and occasional sales below $100 during major events. Taste of Home listed it at about $100 at the time of its review. At about $90 to $100, PB051 is strong value for a beginner or small kitchen because of dual pod and grounds brewing, four brew styles, iced coffee, specialty concentrate, integrated frother, 56 oz tank and compact footprint. At $100 to $130 it remains good value, especially where the frother and iced function replace café purchases. Above about $130, compare it against pod systems and small espresso machines on brew quality and support; at $130 to $170 the price advantage narrows. The differentiator is the combination of pod and grounds flexibility, frother and iced and specialty modes rather than any single spec. If you want true espresso rather than the 4 oz Specialty concentrate, the Ninja Espresso and Coffee Maker Barista System CFN601 is the better choice; if you want carafe brewing in addition to single-serve, the Ninja DualBrew GP161.
