Nespresso Vertuo (original round-head): problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-12

Summary

The original Nespresso Vertuo is the rounded, dome-headed capsule machine sold in the US as the Breville BNV220 and the De’Longhi ENV135B. It can run seven to ten years, but owners also report coffee leaking near the pod-head seal, coffee exiting down the front instead of the spout, and noisy spinning or a loosening lock after years of use. Running cost is dominated by Vertuo capsules at $1.08 to $1.40 each; one daily 8 oz coffee plus descaling is about $532.98 a year.

Yearly running cost

One daily Melozio at $1.40 a capsule is $511.00 a year in capsules; add four descaling packets (two kits at $10.99) for $21.98 and the total is $532.98 a year. One daily Voltesso at $1.08 is $394.20 a year plus $21.98 descaling, or $416.18. Two Melozio cups a day reach $1,043.98 a year with descaling. These are calculations from disclosed assumptions, before tax, delivery, milk, electricity and wasted pods. No verified annual electricity cost exists for this model.

When it is a good buy

Nespresso USA lists the original Vertuo Matte Black and Chrome at $219.99 (October 2026); Breville USA listed the BNV220 black at $219.95, out of stock. Best Buy showed the BNV220 Chrome at $299.99, unavailable, and Williams Sonoma listed a Vertuo plus Aeroccino bundle at $269.95. At $130 or less new from a seller with returns it is a good price; from $131 to $165 it is reasonable only if the classic design matters. Above $165, the Vertuo Pop+ at $99.99 sale or $129.99 list is better value and supports five cup sizes; above $220 the original makes sense only if you strongly prefer the round-head construction. The Vertuo Next is listed at $125.99 promotional or $179.99 list, and the OriginalLine Essenza Mini at $189.99 for espresso-only drinkers who want third-party capsule compatibility.
