Summary
Nespresso’s smallest and most affordable Vertuo capsule machine for the US, brewing five cup sizes from 1.35 oz espresso to 12 oz XL. Check the brew temperature before you buy: testing measured 150–172°F, lukewarm by coffee standards, and Wirecutter tested it and declined to recommend it.
Strengths
- A 30-second heat-up means the first cup lands about half a minute after switch-on.
- Five cup sizes from 1.35 oz espresso to 12 oz XL cover most daily drinks.
- The 8.6 × 14 × 10.4 in body suits small kitchens and office counters.
- Quiet in operation, according to Tom’s Guide’s week-long hands-on test.
- The 2-minute auto-off saves energy between drinks.
- The capsule container takes 8 espresso or 5 mug pods before it needs emptying.
Weaknesses
- Brew temperature runs lukewarm: 150°F average in Consumer Reports lab testing, 172°F in Tom’s Guide’s week.
- About 30 seconds of post-brew dripping leaves the drip tray needing frequent emptying.
- The manual lid is stiff and fussy, and locking it takes real force (Wirecutter).
- It only takes Vertuo-line capsules, which cost more than Original pods.
- Mugs taller than 5.5 in do not fit without removing the drip tray.
- There is no 18 oz carafe size, and the milk frother (Aeroccino) is sold separately.

Brew quality and temperature
The Pop+ brews by spinning the capsule and reading its barcode to set the parameters, so there is no brew-strength control and no grind or dose to adjust. The thick crema is aeration rather than true espresso emulsion — Wirecutter reports some people found it luxurious, others unappealing. Tom’s Guide called the coffee “very dark-roasted” with a “heavy-handed cereal note” and said it cannot rival authentic espresso. Both labs agree on the bigger issue: heat. Consumer Reports averaged 150°F with somewhat inconsistent temperature from cup to cup; Tom’s Guide measured 172°F and called it “a little on the cold side”. If you drink your coffee properly hot, that gap matters more than the color of the machine.
Lid, dripping and daily upkeep
The lid is the part Wirecutter could not forgive: it “needs to be manually pushed down and locked shut”, was “extremely finicky” and required “an uncomfortable amount of force”. Expect the same small ceremony every morning. After brewing, the machine keeps dripping for about 30 seconds, so the drip tray wants regular emptying. Routine upkeep is a monthly cleaning cycle, washing the capsule container and drip tray with mild detergent, and a descaling every three months — Nespresso’s own recommendation — using descaling solution the company sells separately. The descaling alert is an orange triple-blink, and the cycle runs about 20 minutes and cannot be paused. For storage, the system should be emptied to protect it from frost. On the plus side, Nespresso ships free recycling bags for the aluminum capsules in the contiguous US, and its technical hotline offers lifetime assistance.
Capsules and running costs
This machine only accepts dome-shaped Vertuo-line capsules, whose barcode the machine reads; Original-line pods do not work. Nespresso patents the system, so pods come from Nespresso alone — Starbucks is the only licensed third-party vendor, and Wirecutter found its capsules “much less palatable”. Wirecutter reports Vertuo espresso pods at about $0.20 more than Original pods, and coffee pods at about $1.25 each; a daily mug habit adds up at that rate. The machine lists at $189, but Tom’s Guide has never seen it retail above $129 and reports typical street prices around $100 (2026); Consumer Reports tested a $99 unit. Around $100 the Pop+ is reasonable; at the full list price it is not.
Is it worth it?
At its typical $100 street price, the Pop+ makes sense for a single household or a small office that wants espresso and mug coffee without thinking about it — compact, quiet, fast to heat, and sold in colors like Coconut White, Lilac and Pistachio. The $189 list price makes little sense: Wirecutter notes the VertuoPlus at about $110 from Walmart with more features, and it preferred the VertuoPlus over the Pop+. Skip this machine if you want authentic espresso, milk drinks without buying the separate Aeroccino, or carafe brewing. The verdict tracks the price: a bargain around $100, poor value at full list.
