Nespresso VertuoPlus: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-19
Summary
The VertuoPlus is a barcode-reading capsule brewer, and its main recurring problem is water and coffee leakage across machines of different ages. Every drink also locks you into Vertuo capsules: one 8-oz coffee a day costs $532.98 a year with quarterly descaling, two a day $1,043.98.
Common problems and fixes
- Water and coffee leakage — the most common complaint: a July 2025 secondhand owner found about a quarter of each brew collecting in the waste area, a January 2026 Plus Deluxe owner saw rear leaks during every brew despite cleaning, descaling and checking the reservoir seating (support could not resolve it over video chat), and a February 2026 owner traced a bottom leak to a water-sensor area. A 2020 teardown owner found coffee grounds on the brew-chamber gasket, and wiping the accessible gasket surfaces with a soft damp cloth helped; if cleaning and reseating the tank do not stop an external leak, stop use and contact support. [14][17][15]
- Motorized head jam — a February 2025 VertuoPlus Deluxe owner got a stuck capsule holder, loud noises and refusal to close after a spring popped out, and was quoted $65 for a roughly two-week mail-in repair or a 35% replacement discount; Tom’s Guide’s tester saw capsule handling jam when the cycle was interrupted midway. [18][7]
- Brew degradation over years — a January 2025 Breville owner reported thinner crema and watery espresso after nearly 3 years despite descaling and rinses; July 2026 reports describe inconsistent strength after 4 years and harsh spinner noise on a 2017 machine. [16][19]
- Capsule lock-in — every drink needs a Vertuo capsule; there is no manufacturer-approved reusable basket, and OriginalLine, Keurig or loose grounds will not brew. [2][5][7]
- Fiddly maintenance menus — descaling runs about 20 minutes with red, green and orange lamp patterns, a service menu and a do-not-interrupt warning, and the monthly rinse cycle can take up to five minutes. [2]
- Heat-up claims differ — the manual says about 40 seconds while a Nespresso starter-kit page advertises 20, and the 9-minute auto-off means a warm-up wait for a second drink. [2][25]
Parts and consumables
- Vertuo capsules — required, one per drink; Melozio 7.77-oz coffee at $14.00 for 10 capsules ($1.40 each) and Voltesso espresso at $10.80 for 10 ($1.08 each), per the Nespresso US Pro catalog accessed October 2026. [5]
- Descaling kit — $10.99 for two sachets, one sachet per operation with 0.5 L water, every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first; quarterly service means two kits a year, $21.98. [6]
- Drip grid and capsule container — genuine GCB2 parts are listed by Nespresso Korea at ₩1,000 and ₩3,000 (foreign-market prices); a US Etsy seller offers an aftermarket PETG replacement drip tray at $14.95 and up. [23][24]
Yearly running cost
Capsules are the whole bill. At one 8-oz Melozio coffee a day: 365 capsules × $1.40 = $511.00 a year, plus two descaling kits × $10.99 = $21.98, for $532.98 before tax, shipping, milk and electricity. Two coffees a day: 730 × $1.40 = $1,022 plus the same $21.98, for $1,043.98. Espresso only, on Voltesso at $1.08 per capsule: 365 × $1.08 = $394.20 plus $21.98, for $416.18. Above roughly 1,200 capsules a year the 300-capsule descale trigger can force more frequent service; no verified annual electricity cost exists in the sources.
When it is a good buy
Listed prices at US stores, October 2026: Breville USA asked $199.95 for the BNV420 standard machine (shown out of stock), Best Buy asked $179.95 for the white BNV420WHT1BUC1 (shown unavailable) and $199 for the De’Longhi ENV155B Deluxe, Williams Sonoma asked $199.95 for the silver Deluxe and $249.95 for the Deluxe with Aeroccino bundle, and Nespresso’s legacy landing page listed the Deluxe Black at $219; asking prices cluster around $180–$220. The research thresholds: $125 or less new is good if the motorized head matters, $126–$160 is plausible for a returns-backed unit, and over $170 is hard to justify on cup economics. The Nespresso Vertuo Pop+ at $99.99 (promo; $129.99 regular) is the better budget pick if you accept a 25.4-oz tank and a manual lever. The original Vertuo Matte Black at $219.99 is the better choice only if you want the larger body and would rather skip the motorized head. The De’Longhi ENV155B Deluxe at $199 with a 60-oz tank beats the $199.95 standard Plus if you want fewer refills — same family, not a reliability upgrade. [1][3][8][9][10][11][12][13][25]
