Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A capsule brewer that reads the barcode on a Vertuo pod, picks the brew recipe, and ejects the spent capsule on its own — one button, no grinding, no tamping, and a body narrow enough for a crowded counter. Before you buy, read the leak and error-light reports below and price out the proprietary capsules: a daily coffee costs more per year than the machine does.

Strengths

  • Drop a capsule in, lock the head, press one button; the machine reads the barcode and chooses the recipe.
  • 5.5 in wide, so it fits a counter where a grinder and a full-size brewer would not.
  • Ready to brew in about 24 seconds from cold in Tom’s Guide’s test.
  • Ejects the used capsule and runs its own rinse cycle, so there is no grinding, tamping or pod pulling.
  • Drink formats reach 18 oz, larger than most capsule machines.
  • Owners who keep the head and outlet clean report two to four-plus trouble-free years.

Weaknesses

  • Repeated exact-model reports of leaking from the head, capsule area or base, sometimes followed by the machine refusing to brew.
  • Orange and red light states, and brews that fail outright, recur across the same owner threads.
  • Capsules are proprietary, and a daily coffee costs more per year than the machine itself.
  • No built-in frother, so anything with milk needs a second appliance.
  • Measured peak noise of 72 dB from the capsule spin, and an average beverage temperature of 147°F.
  • Warranty length is unsettled: retailer listings for this model say one year or two, depending on the seller.

Capsules and what they add up to

Vertuo pods are a closed ecosystem. OriginalLine capsules and generic K-Cups do not fit, and the size range has shifted with capsule availability over the years. Nespresso USA lists common Vertuo capsules at around a dollar or more each, with the standard 7.77 oz coffees at the top of that range. One coffee a day therefore costs more over a year than the machine does, and descaling solution adds a small recurring cost. Judge the machine against the capsules, not against the sticker price.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are for updates, status and configuration. They do not turn this into a coffee maker you can start from your phone.

Drink quality and noise

Independent testing puts real numbers on the experience. A single espresso took about 53 seconds, a double about 75 seconds. Average beverage temperature measured 147°F, and peak noise hit 72 dB. Energy use was 0.005 kWh for an espresso alone and 0.011 kWh including a cold start. Tom’s Guide liked the one-button simplicity but found the foam bubbly instead of the dense crema of a conventional espresso machine. TechRadar’s Vertuo Next test praised ease of use, smooth coffee and low mess, while criticizing capsule cost, the need for a separate frother and recycling friction.

Some owners say the coffee is not hot enough. The 147°F measurement is fair context, but this is a pod machine that pushes water through a spinning capsule, not a machine brewing at nine bars.

Leaks, error lights and upkeep

Leaking is the strongest exact-model signal. Independent r/nespresso and r/NespressoVertuo threads from 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 describe water or coffee coming out of the head, the capsule area or the base, sometimes followed by an electrical or control failure. Some owners went through several replacements, and current retailer reviews of this model still include 2026 leak and error-code reports.

Nobody has published a failure rate, so treat this as a known annoyance rather than a proven defect — and note that other owners, including several in mid-2026, report two to four-plus years with no faults. Some leaks are maintenance: owners report that clearing coffee grounds from the outlet or cleaning the capsule-head seal stopped the leaking. That does not explain every case, since some machines reportedly leaked almost immediately.

Routine care is rinse and clean cycles, wiping the capsule head and outlet, emptying the bin, and descaling when prompted. Opening the machine is not a realistic fix; owners seeking internal spindle, gasket and valve parts report difficulty sourcing them. Nespresso support commonly troubleshoots by phone or video, and owners report repair or replacement offers, which is useful evidence about service but not a promise.

Warranty length is genuinely unsettled for this model: Dillard’s and Everything Kitchens state one year, ABT states two years of parts and labor. Read the written warranty that ships with your unit.

Is it worth it?

Buy it on a promotion, and only if you already want Vertuo capsules. At a deal price it is a fair machine for someone who wants one-button brewing, a narrow footprint and large coffee formats. At full price, look at the current Vertuo machines on sale instead — the machine cost is small next to a year of capsules, and this model’s leak history makes the case harder.

Which model this is

This page covers the standalone dark-gray De’Longhi Vertuo Next, hardware code ENV120GY, sold in the US as ASIN B084GY7284. It is not the Aeroccino bundle, not the Breville BNV520, and not the Vertuo Pop, Vertuo Plus or newer Vertuo Up. The machine-only listing does not include a milk frother.
