Summary
A wireless Dolby Atmos home-theater system — a 58.1-inch soundbar, two wireless surrounds and two dual-opposing 8-inch subwoofers, 31 drivers in total — for buyers who want receiver-free surround and will calibrate by hand. Check the feature list before you buy: there is no Wi-Fi streaming, no room calibration, and no automatic setup.
Strengths
- Immersion: six up-firing drivers and bipolar surrounds; TechRadar says the effect surpasses any other soundbar system it has heard.
- Dialogue clarity: What Hi-Fi? never had a dialogue problem even amid effects, and owners praise the AMT tweeters.
- Bass scale: the dual-opposing 8-inch subs give deep, full bass and even out bass performance across the room.
- HDMI for gaming and film: three HDMI 2.1 inputs pass 4K120/8K60, Dolby Vision and VRR.
- Owners report no distortion at any volume, though these are self-selected testimonials.
- Nakamichi’s concierge support fixed a subwoofer connectivity issue on one call, according to an owner.
Weaknesses
- No Wi-Fi of any kind: Bluetooth aptX HD is the only wireless streaming, which What Hi-Fi? calls puzzling at this price.
- Manual calibration only: no microphone, no room correction, no automatic setup; entering distances and levels by hand takes time.
- Hot default tuning: RTINGS measured elevated high-bass at the 200Hz default crossover and recommends 120Hz; TechRadar calls the sound aggressive and treble-forward.
- Subwoofer extension is disputed: an r/Soundbars thread claims the subs cannot truly reach 20Hz and bottom out on deep content.
- No stands or mounts ship in the box, and partial returns are not accepted — you cannot later swap the 8-inch subs for 12-inch ones.

Sound quality and tuning
Reviewers agree where it matters. Dialogue stays clear and anchored, bass is punchy and controlled near moderate settings, and the six up-firing drivers produce height effects that Sound & Vision found competing with traditional AVR and speaker packages. The consistent criticism is tonal: What Hi-Fi? calls the sound hard and overbearing, TechRadar finds it aggressive and treble-forward, and RTINGS measured an elevated high-bass range with the default 200Hz subwoofer crossover, recommending 120Hz instead — advice owners in r/Soundbars echo with 120-150Hz.
Setup, remote and firmware
There is no microphone, no app-based auto setup and no room correction: you enter speaker distances and levels through the on-screen display, which What Hi-Fi? calls arguably more accurate but laborious, and the 43-key remote offers 2,000-plus combinations of modes, EQ and Adaptive Height Dispersion. Day-one owners in r/Soundbars found setup easier than expected and recommend the Movie 1 EQ preset with a center-channel boost for dialogue. The surrounds are wireless for audio, but each one must be plugged into a wall outlet. Firmware has meaningfully expanded the system: a 2026 update added AHD Ultra processing and modular 12-inch subwoofer pairing, and systems bought from the official store after April 2026 ship with it, while older units need a USB update.
Subwoofers: what owners say
Owners split. Nakamichi’s own testimonials and r/Soundbars posts praise the physical scale of the dual-opposing 8-inch subs, and one AVS Forum owner calls his unit almost bug-free. A vocal minority argues the opposite: a thread titled “Lies - Updates - Subwoofer scandal” claims the subs cannot truly reach the promised 20Hz and bottom out with an unpleasant noise on deep content, and an AVS Forum owner graded the subs B and B- against the bar and surrounds, calling the issues a dealbreaker. RTINGS’ elevated high-bass finding is consistent with a system tuned hot in the bass region. No reliability statistics exist for this model — treat these as anecdotes, not defect rates.
Support, warranty and running costs
The warranty is one year parts-and-labor in the US, and direct purchases include a 45-day return window with free return shipping; international buyers must ship to Nakamichi in California at their own expense for warranty service. Nakamichi runs a California concierge support line (10:00-18:45 PST on weekdays, shorter weekends), and an owner reports a same-call fix for a sub connectivity issue. There are no subscriptions and no required accessories; the running extras are speaker stands at $399 a pair, surround wall mounts at $45 a pair and a soundbar wall mount at $79. Up to four sub cabinets can be paired, though some mixed configurations are unsupported, and What Hi-Fi? reported the $3,900 US list price becoming about $5,300 delivered to the UK.
Is it worth it?
Nakamichi launched the system at $3,499 in 2023, held a $3,900 list price through early 2024, and TechRadar tested it at $2,999.99 in February 2025; a day-one owner reports paying $2,800, and Nakamichi’s US page listed it at $2,288 in October 2026 against a $3,299.99 compare-at. At $2,288 it is a coherent choice for a buyer who specifically wants wireless surrounds plus dual subs and will calibrate manually. RTINGS still judges the Samsung HW-Q990D the better value, with more balanced default tuning, more flexible sound customization and better wireless connectivity, and What Hi-Fi? concluded that at $3,900 the Dragon was neither a good soundbar nor a good AVR-and-speaker replacement. Above about $2,800 the case weakens. This page covers the DRAGON Dual-8 package with two dual-opposing 8-inch subwoofers; it is not the 11.1.6 package with a single 12-inch sub, the Shockwafe line, or the 1982 cassette deck that lent the name its legacy.
