MSI PRO MP243L E14: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-11
Summary
This is a 23.8-inch 1080p IPS monitor with a 144 Hz refresh rate and FreeSync over HDMI, but its defining limitation is HDMI 2.0 and VGA only with no DisplayPort, confirmed by the official user guide. It is a strong value under $80 if your graphics card works over HDMI, and a weak one above $120 where monitors with DisplayPort and better stands appear.
Common problems and fixes
- No DisplayPort — the official manual’s input menu lists only HDMI and D-Sub, and several Reddit buyers bought it assuming Adaptive-Sync meant DisplayPort, then found the omission. HDMI 2.0 handles FreeSync at 1080p/144 Hz with modern GPUs, but older NVIDIA cards (pre-RTX 20-series) need DisplayPort for G-Sync; if your GPU only outputs DisplayPort, choose another monitor. [3][12][13]
- Tilt-only stand and desk overhang — tilt is -5° to +20° with no height, swivel or pivot, and the base may overhang smaller desks. A 100 x 100 mm VESA arm (M4 x 10 mm screws) is the only ergonomic upgrade. [2][3][9]
- Out-of-box color accuracy — owners report the panel needs calibration before colors look right. [9]
- IPS glow — typical of budget IPS panels and reported by owners. [9]
- HDR Ready is not HDR — there is no VESA DisplayHDR certification or local dimming, so expect standard SDR performance with tone mapping. [2][9]
- MPRT trade-offs — enabling 1 ms MPRT (only possible above 85 Hz) disables Response Time, Brightness, HDCR and Adaptive-Sync. [3]
Parts and consumables
No replaceable parts or consumables reported. The monitor ships with an external power adapter and an HDMI cable, and no parts catalog was found. [3]
Yearly running cost
ENERGY STAR documents 11.61 W on mode, 36.51 kWh per year, 0.16 W in sleep and 0.14 W off, so electricity cost is minimal. There are no parts or consumables to buy. [5]
When it is a good buy
- $80 and under — strong for a basic 1080p 144 Hz IPS display with a long warranty, provided HDMI-only connectivity works for your GPU. [7][9][13]
- $81-100 — competitive; compare against similarly priced 24-inch 144 Hz IPS monitors with DisplayPort. [7]
- $101-120 — fair; the missing DisplayPort and tilt-only stand get harder to justify. [6][8][12]
- Above $120 — weak; established alternatives with DisplayPort, height-adjustable stands and deeper test coverage appear. [7][10]
- B&H Photo lists it at $114.99, CDW at $119.99, Compsource at $127.33 and Walmart at $109.99; The Tech Showdown checked it at $79.99 on 2026-10-11 with a 90-day range of $74.00-89.99. [6][7][10][11][9]
- The non-L MSI PRO MP243 E14 adds DisplayPort and built-in speakers, and the sibling PRO MP243W E14 adds DisplayPort and speakers at around $120, so either is the better choice if you need those. [1][6][14]
