Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A 4G-only budget Android phone with a 5000 mAh battery, a single 50MP camera and 4GB of RAM, sold in the US at $149.99 when it launched in February 2024. Check that 4G-only and 4GB of RAM are enough, because there is no 5G modem and no NFC.

Strengths

  • Day-to-day performance is mostly smooth, with occasional small stutter and slower cold app launches.
  • The 50MP camera was judged better than all three sensors in the 2023 model combined.
  • Clean Android 13 with no heavy skin.
  • Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • The dedicated microSD slot takes cards up to 1TB.

Weaknesses

  • The 500-nit HD+ panel washes out in bright outdoor light.
  • The stereo speakers distort at higher volumes.
  • There is no 5G radio and no NFC, so no 5G networks and no contactless payments.
  • Charging is 15W, and the 5000 mAh battery needs a 20W-plus charger that is not in the box.
  • There is only 4GB of real RAM; RAM Boost is virtual memory, not extra physical memory.
  • The selfie camera has no autofocus.

Battery, charging and performance

The 5000 mAh battery is the reason to buy this phone. Charging is the trade-off: 15W wired, and reaching the full 15W needs a 20W-plus charger that Motorola does not include. GSMArena says no charger is in the box, while Phone Scoop says a 10W charger ships in some versions, so treat the charger as a likely extra cost. The Snapdragon 680 handles calls, messaging and light games, with occasional stutter and slower cold app launches; intensive games are out of scope. It runs Android 13 at launch, listed as upgradable to Android 14, and Motorola made no update commitment at launch.

Display and cameras

The single 50MP f/1.8 rear camera with Quad Pixel was judged better than all three sensors in the 2023 model combined, with night mode, spot color and Dual Capture, though zoom is capped at 8x digital. The 8MP selfie camera has no autofocus and is serviceable. Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos sound decent but distort at higher volumes, and a 3.5mm jack is included.

Running costs and protection

Expect to add a charger, a case and a screen protector, and an optional microSD card. Motorola sells protection as Moto Care: Accidental Damage Protection from $9.99 a month or $99.99 for a fixed cover period, and an Extended Service Plan from $29.99 a year. ADP subscriptions are only available at purchase, non-subscription plans within 60 days of activation, and ESP can be bought any time during the warranty period. The battery is non-removable, no replacement-parts channel was found for this model, and the standard warranty length could not be read from Motorola’s support pages.

Is it worth it?

Below $150 this is defensible for calls, messaging, streaming, and as a first phone or a kid’s phone. Between $150 and $200 it is still reasonable if 4G-only is acceptable. Above roughly $200 it is weak value, because no price cut adds 5G, NFC or more RAM; the same reviewer points to a Samsung Galaxy A14 at about $50 more and a OnePlus Nord N30 5G with 8GB/128GB, a 6.72-inch 120Hz display and 5G. The strongest cases are a backup handset, a hand-me-down, a prepaid-carrier line, or basic calling and messaging on 4G.
