Summary

A 2023 mid-range Android phone with a 6.55-inch 144Hz pOLED screen, a Dimensity 8020 chip and a 50MP f/1.4 main camera. The one thing to check before buying is software support: GSMArena says Motorola promised only 2 OS upgrades, with security updates to January 2028.

Strengths

  • A light, thin body at 7.6 mm and 167-171 g depending on finish.
  • The 6.55-inch 144Hz pOLED measured 1,043 nits in auto mode.
  • The 68W charger is in the box and reached a full charge in about 40 minutes.
  • Low-light photos from the f/1.4 main camera are a strong point.
  • Stereo speakers measured -24.2 LUFS and were rated “Very good”.
  • Close-to-stock Android with Ready For desktop mode.

Weaknesses

  • The Auto refresh mode never selects 144Hz and caps games at 60Hz.
  • There is no telephoto camera, and the 2x zoom is a digital crop.
  • Video stabilization shows focus hunting while walking.
  • The vegan-leather back collects dirt and is hard to clean.
  • Software support is short: 2 OS upgrades with security updates to January 2028.

Performance, screen and battery

The Edge 40 runs a MediaTek Dimensity 8020, which GSMArena describes as effectively a rebadged Dimensity 1100. It scores 799 single-core and 3320 multi-core in Geekbench 5 and 688,347 in AnTuTu 9, putting it behind the Pixel 7 and Edge 30 Fusion but ahead of the Galaxy A54, Nothing Phone (1) and Realme 10 Pro+. Everyday use is snappy; only Netflix picture-in-picture produced visible slow-down.

Thermals are the one inconsistent result. GSMArena’s one-hour CPU throttling test showed only a modest ramp-down and stable 3DMark stress results. Treat sustained 3D gaming as the thing that makes this phone hot.

The screen gives you selectable 60, 120 and 144Hz modes, or Auto. Auto holds 120Hz during touch, drops to 60Hz idle, uses 90Hz while scrolling in browsers and never selects 144Hz; games are capped at 60Hz in Auto.

Cameras and video

The main camera is a 50MP f/1.4 with OIS and outputs 12.5MP by default. Daylight shots are noise-free with plenty of detail, and dynamic range passed an overcast test. Low light is strong, but Auto Night Vision does not engage when zoomed, so 2x night shots are harsh until Night mode is selected. The 50MP Ultra-Res mode adds no real detail.

The 13MP ultrawide has autofocus and can double as a close-up camera, but its night shots push shadows to navy blue and it is soft. There is no telephoto, the 2x zoom is a digital crop of the main camera, and the macro mode is a cropped, upscaled view from the ultrawide.

Only the main rear camera records 60fps, and only at 1080p; the ultrawide and selfie cameras cannot. Stabilization shows focus hunting while walking, and the ultrawide drops slightly below 30fps on a tripod.

Software support and updates

The software commitment is the biggest risk for a 2023 phone bought in 2026. GSMArena states the Edge 40 is promised only 2 OS upgrades, with security updates to January 2028, and calls that policy too little. Trusted Reviews instead reports a promise of three years of OS upgrades and four years of security updates. The phone did receive Android 14.

Two concrete bugs were seen on a launch unit: app icons doubling inside folders, and incoming call audio being inaudible unless the call was ended and redialled. On the GSMArena spec page, owners ask whether security patches have stopped; one claims the last patch was 1 April 2026 while another reports a 1 June 2026 patch.

Is it worth it?

Motorola priced the Edge 40 at £529.99 in the UK at launch, with a UK RRP of £529 and the US price listed as TBC. GSMArena described the launch market price as €500-600 for the 8GB/256GB model and judged the Galaxy A54 the better deal at that band, with the Moto’s advantages being the chipset, wireless charging and battery life. TechRadar framed it against the Pixel 7 and rated the value highly, while noting a smaller accessory market and fewer updates than a Galaxy S23. Because no US street price for this exact model was verified, there is no defensible current-price threshold here.

Which model this is

This page covers the Motorola Edge 40 5G, model XT2303-2, released in 2023. It is not the Edge 40 Pro, the Edge 40 Neo or the Edge 30 Fusion. In the US the base model was expected to be sold as the Motorola Edge (2023), while the Edge 40 Pro was sold as edge+ (2023). The listing is ASIN B0D99ND84L.
