Summary
A 0.8-litre mini PC built around a 54W Ryzen 9 7940HS, Radeon 780M graphics, dual DDR5 and dual PCIe 4.0 NVMe, aimed at buyers who want desktop-class performance in a small box. Check three things before buying: the BIOS and firmware history, that the memory actually runs at the advertised speed, and the price, because direct pricing runs well above the sale and third-party prices.
Strengths
- A 54W Ryzen 9 7940HS and Radeon 780M squeeze desktop-class performance into 0.8 litres.
- The Cold Wave 2.0 cooling stays quiet, measuring 2–2.5 dB above background at full load.
- Idle draw is only 5–7W, so running costs are low.
- Two USB4 ports handle displays and give an eGPU path over USB4.
- The bottom panel opens with two screws for RAM and SSD upgrades.
- A VESA mount is in the box for behind-monitor placement.
Weaknesses
- The CPU is soldered, so there is no future processor upgrade.
- There is no 2.5 in SATA bay, only the two M.2 slots.
- Early BIOS versions had erratic fan behaviour and stability problems, fixed only through updates.
- At least one owner received a refurbished unit advertised as DDR5-5600 that shipped with DDR5-4800.
- Some owners report more fan noise after BIOS updates, and others hit sleep and wake problems.
- Support experiences are mixed, with some owners reporting slow service.

Performance
Independent tests put this near desktop territory. TechRadar measured Cinebench R23 single-core 1,834 and multi-core 15,874, 3DMark Wild Life 15,402, Fire Strike 7,351 and Time Spy 2,674, and CrystalDiskMark read 3,905 MB/s with write 1,970 MB/s. VideoCardz saw 1,782 single-core and 16,702 multi-core on a retail unit, and recorded 89.7 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p Lowest. The Radeon 780M handles 1080p gaming at medium settings in most titles, with esports titles past 150 fps.
Cooling, noise and power
MINISFORUM calls the cooling Cold Wave 2.0, with liquid metal on the CPU and active cooling for the memory and SSD. Idle power draw is 5–7W, rising to 80–85W at maximum. Some owners report more fan noise after BIOS updates, so cooling behaviour is not identical across firmware.
What owners report
Owner threads in r/MiniPCs are broadly positive, and one owner called it the best mini PC they had tested. The recurring complaints are firmware and configuration: early units had erratic fan behaviour and stability problems that MINISFORUM addressed through BIOS releases up to version 1.09 and beyond, some owners hit sleep and wake issues that need BIOS and driver updates, and one owner received a refurbished unit advertised as DDR5-5600 that shipped with DDR5-4800. The unit supports up to four displays, but the USB4 ports need DisplayPort or HDMI adapters. These are self-selected reports, not failure rates.
Upgrades and upkeep
The bottom panel opens with two screws for RAM and SSD access, and the two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 slots are the only internal storage, since there is no SATA bay. The CPU is soldered, so there is no processor upgrade. Upgrades use standard DDR5 SODIMM and M.2 2280 drives, and there is no subscription or proprietary storage. New units from MINISFORUM’s US store carry a 2-year seller warranty with a 30-day money-back guarantee; refurbished units carry 1 year. Support runs through MINISFORUM’s own center, and owner experiences with it are mixed.
Is it worth it?
MINISFORUM’s US store lists the barebone at $367 (down from $459), the 32GB/512GB build at $815 (down from $1,019), the 32GB/1TB at $879 (down from $1,099), and the 64GB/1TB at $1,223 (down from $1,529). At $815 the 32GB/512GB build is hard to justify against newer Ryzen 8040/8050 and Intel Core Ultra mini PCs. Sales and third-party listings are where it makes more sense: TechRadar saw the 32GB/512GB build at $359 at Newegg and $367 at Walmart in 2023, a third-party store lists the 32GB/1TB at $699, refurbished units start at $259, and one 2026 review references $299 pricing. Below about $600 it is strong value; above roughly $800 it is weak unless the dual USB4, dual HDMI 2.1 and 0.8-litre chassis are exactly what you need.
Which model this is
This page covers the MINISFORUM UM790 Pro, based on the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS with Radeon 780M graphics. MINISFORUM sells it barebone and in 16GB+512GB, 32GB+512GB, 32GB+1TB and 64GB+1TB builds, and all share the same processor, graphics and chassis.
The Amazon listing for this model is ASIN B0C7V29HBQ.
Don’t confuse it with the UM780 Pro (Ryzen 7 7840HS), the UM890 Pro (Ryzen 9 8945HS) or the UM790 XTX, which uses a different chassis and adds OCuLink. The UM790 Pro itself has no OCuLink; eGPUs connect over USB4.
