Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

Milwaukee’s brushless 5-inch palm orbital sander, sold as a bare tool for carpenters, remodelers and serious weekend woodworkers.

Strengths

  • Both independent testers singled out vibration damping as the standout trait.
  • Dust collection works in practice: little residue on the workpiece, and the bag holds its shape and empties easily.
  • It never bogged down under heavy pressure across all five speed modes.
  • The wider pommel is a clear ergonomic step up from the brushed 2648 it replaces.
  • VACLINK starts the extractor remotely, saving vac battery and cutting shop noise.
  • A 5-year warranty is long coverage for a bare tool.

Weaknesses

  • Price is the recurring complaint: owners call full retail hard to justify unless you sand often.
  • Battery and charger are not included, a major added cost if you don’t already run M18.
  • The 95% dust figure needs a PACKOUT VACLINK extractor; with the included bag it’s 88%.
  • Vibration is reduced, not eliminated — one tester still felt it on longer stints.
  • The dust and vibration numbers are manufacturer claims; no independent lab has measured them.
  • No runtime-per-charge figure has been published for this model.

Vibration and dust collection

Milwaukee’s headline claims are 12,000 max OPM and the lowest cordless vibration in its comparison chart — 3 m/s² at 12,000 OPM — plus up to 95% dust collection with a VACLINK extractor. Those are manufacturer numbers; no independent lab has instrumented them, so treat them as claims rather than measurements. The two hands-on reviews agree with the claims qualitatively. Pro Tool Reviews’ tester mapped all five speed modes, reported no bogging under heavy pressure, said the soft backing pad dampens vibration well even though it “doesn’t eliminate it altogether,” and saw very little residual dust on the workpiece. Popular Woodworking’s tester, writing in July 2025, called the vibration “definitely the best of all the sanders I’ve tested so far” while admitting it stays noticeable on longer stints, and found “virtually zero dust on surfaces” after indoor work — suggesting Milwaukee’s 95% claim “might be selling themselves short.”

What owners say

Owners on r/MilwaukeeTool echo the testers. The recurring praise is balance and dust capture — “well balanced, very low vibration and good dust collection” — and one owner called the 2837 “leaps and bounds better” than the 2648; even Milwaukee’s own account chimed in that “dust collection is really good.” The recurring complaint is value at full retail. One new owner was “considering returning” the sander and said “literally the only reason I want to keep it is the price”; another wrote “i don’t use it enough to justify over $200 on a sander” and recommended waiting for a sale. These are owner opinions, not defect reports — no bearing-failure or motor-failure complaints showed up in the readable threads.

The bare tool lists for $229 at Acme Tools, Home Depot, Ohio Power Tool and Northern Tool (2026). Milwaukee’s launch pre-sale in October 2024 was $199, and Popular Woodworking’s July 2025 review lists MSRP $229; Pro Tool Reviews’ own article quotes $199 in its text and $229 in its retailer checkboxes. Battery and charger are not included, so for non-Milwaukee owners the real cost runs well past the tag. The 95% dust figure also presumes the PACKOUT 9-gallon dual-battery extractor, itself a multi-hundred-dollar purchase; with a shop vac on the universal adapter you land closer to bag-level efficiency. Running costs are sandpaper, dust bags and filters. One owner picked one up for a little over $100 on sale, and owners report sale prices around $100–130 — at those prices the value math changes completely.

Dust bag safety and upkeep

The operator’s manual carries two warnings that matter for every owner. Sanding dust contains chemicals known to cause cancer, and dust collected from coatings such as polyurethanes or linseed oil can self-ignite inside the bag. The manual’s instruction is blunt: empty the dust bag every 10–15 minutes while sanding and never store the sander with a full bag. Day-to-day upkeep is otherwise light — the universal hose adapter fits 1-1/4", 1-7/8" and larger shop-vac hoses, and the dust path’s canister-and-filter design implies occasional filter cleaning. No service-parts catalog for this model has been published, and the 5-year warranty is the main reliability signal.

Which model this is

This page covers the Milwaukee M18 FUEL 5-inch Random Orbital Sander, model 2837-20, announced at Milwaukee’s 2024 Pipeline event and sold bare — no battery, no charger. It replaces the older brushed 2648-20, a 7,000–12,000 OPM dial sander without VACLINK; don’t merge the two when comparing specs. The Amazon listing for this sander is ASIN B0F1BM6PVT. That ASIN could not be tied to a model number on any readable non-Amazon page, so the identification rests on a unique spec set — 5-mode 6,000–12,000 OPM, VACLINK, the 95% dust claim, 3.1 lb bare weight.
