Summary
A compact 12V impact driver kit for buyers who want small size and M12 battery sharing rather than maximum torque.
Strengths
- 5.1 inches long and 1.8 lb bare — one of the most compact impact drivers in the 12V class.
- The fourth drive mode is a self-tapping screw mode that reduces walking, overdriving, breaking and stripping.
- Two 2.0 Ah batteries, a charger, a case and a belt clip are in the box, so the kit is ready to work.
- Brushless motor and REDLINK PLUS electronics protect the tool and battery from overload and heat.
- The M12 platform means existing M12 battery owners face near-zero marginal cost.
Weaknesses
- Superseded by the 3453 Gen 3, which offers 1,500 in-lbs, 0-3,600 RPM and a three-LED collet ring — and Milwaukee still sells the 2553-22 alongside it.
- The single-LED lighting above the trigger draws owner complaints about shadows; the three-LED ring arrived only with Gen 3.
- The fuel gauge is on the tool, not on the battery, so loose batteries cannot be checked without inserting them into a tool.
- First-generation 2453 owners reported insert bits (short bits in magnetic holders) seating in the collet but not ejecting properly — a design question the 2553 does not answer publicly.
- No instrumented exact-model test from RTINGS, Wirecutter, Tom’s Guide, CNET or PCMag was found.

Generation status and pricing
The 2553-22 is the second generation of Milwaukee’s M12 FUEL 1/4 in. hex impact driver. Milwaukee’s own site still lists the 2553-22 as an active kit, so both statements can be true — the legacy SKU remains in distribution alongside its successor.
The pricing trap is real. Pro Tool Reviews listed the 2553 bare tool at $129 in 2024 and the Gen 3 3453 kit at $169 the same year. A new 2553-22 kit priced near or above current Gen-3 pricing is difficult to justify on specs alone. A “new” kit may be old stock or open-box; compare against the 3453’s price before paying a premium.
Drive control and practical use
The 2553’s standout feature is its fourth drive mode: a self-tapping screw mode designed to reduce walking and overdriving or breaking self-tapping screws. This is a functional differentiator versus basic 3-mode 12V impacts, and seller listings rarely highlight it. The other three modes step through 0-1,300, 0-2,400 and 0-3,300 RPM, giving you a wide speed range for different fastener sizes and materials.
At 5.1 inches long and 1.8 lb bare, the tool fits where larger impacts cannot — inside cabinets, tight corners and overhead work. That workload boundary applies here: the 2553 excels at quick, repetitive driving of smaller fasteners, not all-day structural work.
Owner signals and durability
Exact-model owner discussion was not accessible during this check — Reddit fetches were blocked and web search was rate-limited. Platform-level signals from the M12 FUEL impact line are anecdotal but consistent:
Complaints that may or may not persist in the 2553 include the single-LED lighting criticized for shadows, the tool-side (not battery-side) fuel gauge and insert bits that did not eject properly from the 2453 collet. Gen 3 addressed the lighting; the other two remain open questions.
Which model this is
This page covers the Milwaukee 2553-22 M12 FUEL 1/4 in. Hex Impact Driver Kit — the second generation of Milwaukee’s M12 FUEL hex impact driver, superseded by the 3453 Gen 3. The Amazon listing is ASIN B07G1C1PVK. Do not confuse it with the M12 FUEL Surge hydraulic driver 2551-22, the M18 FUEL 2853-22, or the first-generation 2453.
