Summary

A compact 4V cordless screwdriver kit for repetitive light assembly, with a 21-position auto shut-off clutch and a two-speed gearbox. Check the price before you buy: retailer snapshots range from $145 to $236, and the clutch’s auto shut-off can fail to engage in high speed at high settings.

Strengths

  • 21-position clutch with auto shut-off gives repeatable low-torque fastening.
  • Slim inline body folds to a pistol grip for tight spaces and one-handed use.
  • Two batteries in the box let one charge while the other works.
  • 5-year tool warranty and 2-year battery warranty.
  • Still in the Milwaukee lineup since 2012; owners report several years of use.

Weaknesses

  • No variable-speed trigger; speed is set by the 2-speed gearbox.
  • Auto shut-off may not engage at high clutch settings in high speed.
  • Retailer prices sit between $145 and $236 against about $30 USB-C screwdrivers.
  • 44 in-lbs is peak motor torque, not a clutch-setting value.
  • Brushed motor, not brushless.
  • No included case or large bit set.

Clutch, speed and torque

The clutch is the tool’s defining feature. The manual tabulates approximate torque from about 3.7 to 23.4 in-lbs across settings 1–19, with settings 20–21 marked N/A; the 44 in-lbs figure is peak motor torque, not a clutch setting. The auto shut-off stops the motor at the preset torque, but the manual warns that in high speed the clutch should be set at 10 or below, because the shut-off may not engage at higher settings. There is no variable-speed trigger: a rocker selects forward or reverse at the chosen gear speed, and the motor is brushed.

One owner measured settings 1–21 with an inexpensive torque screwdriver and got 2.83 to 24.69 in-lbs; that is a single uncalibrated sample, not a factory specification.

Owners and trade use

Owners in r/MilwaukeeTool describe the M4 as a popular trade driver used one-handed for repetitive assembly, hung vertically within reach. Several owners report several years of reliable use, and one 2026 owner got a replacement kit at no cost after a no-start condition. Others want a variable-speed trigger, and some compare the price against about $30 USB-C rechargeable screwdrivers. No recurring mechanical failure mode was found in the sources checked, but long-term failure-rate data does not exist publicly.

Retailer snapshots on 2026-10-16 put the kit between $144.75 (Home Depot) and $235.95 (Global Industrial), with $199 the most common anchor. Northern Tool lists $199.00 and Toolup $199.00. A $129 Home Depot promotion was seen but is not a confirmed live offer.

The M4 battery is proprietary: replacement 2.0 packs list at about $45 each, and the charger is a separate 120 V unit with a 45-minute charge time. There is no subscription and no scheduled consumable. Electricity for a full year of typical charging is pennies. A $199 kit kept useful for five years works out to about $40 a year before bits, energy and repairs, which is not a reliability forecast.

Is it worth it?

At $150 or less it is a good buy for repetitive light assembly or for anyone already on M4 batteries. From $151 to $199 it is fair, and above $200 it is hard to justify for general home use against a $99 M12 kit or a $119 DeWalt gyroscopic driver. The value case rests on the clutch and auto shut-off, not on the 44 in-lbs figure alone.

Which model this is

This page covers the Milwaukee M4 1/4" Hex Screwdriver Kit, model 2101-22, containing the 2101-20 driver, two M4 REDLITHIUM 2.0 batteries (48-11-2001) and one M4 charger (48-59-2001). It is not the one-battery 2101-21 kit or the tool-only 2101-20, and it is not an M12 drill, impact driver or ratchet. The UPC is 045242298174. The tool launched in November 2012 as the first tool in the M4 line.
