Summary
A thin, light 13.8-inch Windows laptop on Qualcomm’s Arm chip, built for all-day battery life and a bright 120Hz touchscreen. Check that the apps, printers and docks you depend on run natively on Arm before you buy.
Strengths
- Class-leading battery life: CNET measured 19h 50min of YouTube streaming, and Microsoft rates the X Plus at up to 20 hours of video.
- A bright, uniform 120Hz 3:2 touchscreen measured at 568–569 nits in testing.
- A rigid anodized aluminium chassis that owners and reviewers describe as tank-like.
- The SSD is user-removable, rare in this class, so storage can be added later.
- Quiet cooling and a haptic touchpad that draws consistent praise; the fans rarely spin up.
- Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 keep the wireless side current.
Weaknesses
- Most independent tests ran on the 12-core X Elite, not this 10-core X Plus, so real speed and endurance will be a little lower.
- The LCD covers 73.3% DCI-P3 and cannot match OLED; Laptop Mag saw severe ghosting on two units.
- Not a gaming laptop: Civilization VI ran at 21 fps and the Adreno GPU trails Intel Arc.
- Arm compatibility is the real constraint: some x86 apps, anti-cheat games and certain printers and docks need emulation or will not work.
- Keyboard travel is shallow; Laptop Mag typed 76 wpm against its 81 wpm average.
- No OLED, no discrete GPU and no Surface Pen support.

Battery life and the Snapdragon chip
Battery life is the reason to buy this laptop. Microsoft rates the 54 Wh battery at up to 20 hours of local video playback and up to 13 hours of active web use, though those figures come from April 2024 testing on pre-production X Plus units. CNET measured 19h 50min of YouTube streaming, the longest it had recorded in its 13-14 inch class at the time, while Tom’s Guide and Laptop Mag both measured 15h 44min of web surfing on X Elite configs. The 10-core X Plus here has fewer performance cores than the X Elite most reviewers tested, so expect a modest drop in both speed and endurance.
The chip is a 10-core Snapdragon X Plus with a 45 TOPS Hexagon NPU for Copilot+ features. Browsing, Office work and media playback feel quick, but the Adreno integrated GPU is not built for gaming: Civilization VI ran at 21 fps and 3DMark Time Spy scored 1,798, roughly half of an Intel Arc machine. The Copilot+ AI features drew lukewarm reviews; Recall shipped disabled by default after privacy concerns.
The screen and build
The 13.8-inch PixelSense Flow panel is bright and smooth: 568–569 nits measured, a 120Hz dynamic refresh rate, and a tall 3:2 shape that fits more vertical document. It is an IPS LCD, not OLED, covering 73.3% DCI-P3 with a 1400:1 contrast ratio, so blacks and colour depth trail OLED ultrabooks. Laptop Mag reported severe ghosting on two separate units, visible on testufo.com, and warned it could bother motion-sensitive users. Whether that is a batch issue or a panel trait is not settled.
The aluminium chassis is rigid and finished well. The keyboard has shallow travel but a firm response, and the haptic touchpad is widely praised. There is no HDMI and no SD card reader, so plan on a USB-C hub or dongle for a monitor or Ethernet. The hinge does not open a full 180 degrees.
Arm app compatibility
Arm is the catch. Chrome, Slack, Spotify, Zoom and Adobe’s photo apps run natively, but some older x86 software runs through Microsoft’s Prism emulation with a speed and battery penalty, and games with anti-cheat drivers, OpenGL apps above version 1.1, and some printers, scanners and non-Surface docks may not work at all. Microsoft Q&A threads describe intermittent Wi-Fi drops, random freezes and peripheral glitches, though some were fixed by driver updates. No failure rate has been published, so treat these as known annoyances rather than a defect.
Microsoft keeps a tested list of monitors and docks, and its App Assure programme helps resolve compatibility problems. If your work depends on one specific Windows app or a niche peripheral, test it before you commit.
Upkeep, ports and warranty
There is little to maintain beyond Windows Update and the Surface app, which handles battery, touchpad and warranty settings. The 512GB SSD is a PCIe Gen 4 part you can replace yourself, which is rare here, but the 16GB of memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded. The included charger is 39W; charging to 80% in about an hour needs a 65W or higher USB-C supply. Budget for a USB-C hub or dock if you need HDMI or Ethernet, and for a Microsoft 365 subscription if you want the full Office apps. The consumer model carries a one-year limited warranty.
Is it worth it?
At $900 or less the X Plus with 16GB and 512GB is strong value: class-leading battery, a bright 120Hz touchscreen, an aluminium body and a removable SSD. Between $901 and $1,100 it is still a good buy, especially on sale, and CNET singled out this configuration as the value option in the line-up. Above about $1,300 the missing OLED, limited gaming and Arm compatibility caveats are hard to justify unless the battery life and form factor matter most.
For reference, Laptop Mag saw the 512GB model at $974.99 at Walmart, $1,149 at Newegg and $1,159.99 at Best Buy in October 2024, and Microsoft lists it at $999.99. Launch pricing in June 2024 was $1,199 for this configuration and $999 for the 256GB base model.
Which model this is
This page covers the Surface Laptop 7 (7th Edition), 13.8-inch consumer model with the 10-core Snapdragon X Plus, 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD, sold in Black, Dune and Sapphire. The US listing carries ASIN B0G1S7C7J4. Do not confuse it with the 15-inch Surface Laptop 7, the newer 8th Edition with the Snapdragon X2, the cheaper 13-inch model with an 8-core X Plus and no Surface Connect, or the Intel versions of the business line.
