Metabo HPT WH18DEX: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-08

Summary

The WH18DEX is an 18V brushless 1/4 in. hex impact driver sold as the WH18DEXM two-2Ah starter kit, rated at 1,549 in-lb and 0–3,100 rpm with a single variable-speed trigger. The main problems are not motor failures: kit pack-ins differ between editions, so the charger and bag in the box may not match the listing, and price swings from $74.92 to $179 for the same kit. Running cost is low — about $1.35 a year of electricity for one 2Ah pack a day, plus an unplanned $69 battery if a pack dies — and it is a good buy at $95 or less, weak above $149.

Parts and consumables

Yearly running cost

Electricity is the only predictable cost. Each 2Ah pack stores about 36Wh nominal, so the two included packs hold about 72Wh. On an illustrative schedule of one fully discharged 2Ah pack per working day for 150 days a year, at an assumed 80% charging efficiency and $0.20/kWh, the wall draw is about 6.75 kWh, or roughly $1.35 a year; using both packs daily would roughly double that to 13.5 kWh and about $2.70. Those are calculations, not metered results, and charger standby use varies. [1][15]

When it is a good buy

Offer snapshots for the two-2Ah kit span about $74.92 at Walmart and $104.89 at Premier Tool Supply, with Lowe’s at $179 and a historical $99 promotion in August 2026. The older Pro Tool Reviews figure was $179 at launch in 2023. [5][6][7][8][9][19]
