Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A discontinued 2021 smart display built for video calling, with a 10.1-inch screen, a battery and a carry handle that let it move between rooms. Check the battery before you buy a used one: owners report units that enter a boot loop after the pack runs flat and will not power on away from the dock.

Strengths

  • Video calling is the strongest feature, with Messenger, WhatsApp, Zoom, Teams and more on one device.
  • The screen, handle and battery make it movable between rooms; no rival in this class ships with both.
  • Owners and reviewers praise the display, sound and microphone quality for calls.
  • It doubles as a digital photo frame and a portable speaker.
  • At around $50, owners report it is a good buy for calling and photo-frame use.

Weaknesses

  • Discontinued since 2022; Meta no longer sells it and software support is fading.
  • The battery can enter a boot loop after a full discharge and may not recover off the dock.
  • Spotify’s app was removed in 2025 and WhatsApp has unlinked itself on some units.
  • Alexa is a reduced implementation and sometimes fails entirely.
  • No Google Assistant, Google Meet, Netflix or Disney Plus; no casting or HDMI output.
  • Charging uses a proprietary dock only, with no cable fallback.

Video calling and apps

The calling lineup is the reason to own one. Messenger, WhatsApp, Zoom, BlueJeans, Workplace, GoToMeeting, Webex and, from December 2021, Microsoft Teams are supported, which PCMag considered the best-supported conferencing lineup of its time. Owners across r/FacebookPortal repeatedly single out call quality and Teams performance as the reason they kept the device. The 12MP camera with a 125-degree field of view and digital pan and zoom keeps the caller framed; PCMag rated it well in testing for sharpness and natural color, and BGR compared the tracking to Apple’s Center Stage. The browser is good enough for HBO Max, but Google Meet and Skype are not supported, and Netflix and Disney Plus are not reachable as native apps. The app library mixes native apps with pinned website shortcuts, and some services render with small text and no pinch-to-zoom.

Battery, charging and the dock

Facebook claimed up to five hours of video calls and 14 hours of audio playback, and PCMag reported that claim rather than testing it. BGR’s practical observation was that the unit lasts roughly two days of intermittent use and should live on its base. The bigger problem is what owners report when the battery empties: the device enters a boot and shutdown loop, and multiple users state it will not power on away from the dock after that, describing the unit as effectively bricked. Meta’s own guidance is to keep it docked and to use only the official charger. Replacement packs are available at roughly $40, but changing one means separating a glued screen, and one owner reports that Meta’s battery management may permanently flag a non-authorised pack. A workaround of removing the battery and running on the dock is reported, at the cost of portability. The pack is quoted at 44 Wh (2983 mAh, 14.8 V).

Audio and display

The camera is 12MP with a 125-degree field of view. Audio is the weak point: dual 5W drivers with a 20W woofer, but PCMag’s track-by-track testing found aggressive digital signal processing that pulls down bass rather than distorting it, giving a low-mids-forward, sometimes harsh balance that will not fill a room. Expert Reviews heard clear sound with decent separation and bass, with no measured figures. There is no IP rating, so keep it dry.

Platform life after Meta’s exit

Meta announced it would no longer sell Portal products in June 2022 and discontinued the line in November 2022. Its support page, as cited by Wikipedia, says owners can keep using a Portal until February 2032, but services have been disappearing well before that. Spotify’s app was removed from Portal Go units in 2025. WhatsApp has unlinked itself from some devices, with owners reporting QR codes that will not load. Alexa is a reduced implementation even in theory, limited to music, reminders, alarms and weather, with no Ring video, no general questions, no browsing and no drop-in, and some owners report it erroring on every request or never having worked. Owners have resorted to blocking firmware updates to preserve what remains. Setup failures and factory resets that fail after the countdown also recur. A 2025 buyer request for a “Portal Go 2” found no successor exists.

Is it worth it?

At around $50, which is where US owners report buying it, the hardware and the calling are worth the risk for someone whose main need is a movable WhatsApp or Zoom terminal, or a photo frame for a relative. At $100 to $150 the risk profile changes: the device is unsupported by Meta’s store, its apps are being removed, and the battery is a documented failure point. Above $199 there is no defensible case, since the same money buys a supported device with better software support. Before buying, check whether the seller’s unit has a healthy battery, whether the return window covers a battery failure, and whether the buyer needs Google Assistant, Google Meet, Netflix or Disney Plus, none of which the platform provides. Launch price was $199 (Meta, 2021); PCMag’s November 2021 review recorded $199 at Meta Portal and $199 at Target; Expert Reviews reviewed the UK model at £199 (January 2022). Replacement battery packs cost about $40 (third-party vendor, 2026). Owners report refunds of about $120 against a $147 purchase, and a UK buyer obtained a £49.99 refund under consumer-rights law.

Which model this is

This page covers the 2021 Meta Portal Go, the 10.1-inch battery-powered smart display with a carry handle and a puck charging dock. The combination of battery, handle, puck dock and 20W woofer is unique to this model; do not confuse it with the 2021 Portal+ (14-inch, no battery, no handle), the 2019 Portal TV (camera only, no display) or the 2023 Portal TV (10-inch, no battery, no handle, no 20W woofer).

The Amazon listing for this model is ASIN B09FYH2511.

Codename in published firmware dumps is “Terry”.
