Summary
A 1 kg spool of tan MH Build Series ABS in 1.75 mm for an enclosed, heated, ventilated printer, with a retained list price of $22.99. Check before buying: the exact SKU is currently unavailable, and the manufacturer’s product page, technical data sheet and safety data sheet disagree on diameter tolerance and density.
Strengths
- Useful ABS performance class: heat tolerance, sanding and acetone welding, with a nominal 78°C heat deflection and 43 MPa tensile yield in the family TDS.
- Broad catalog: 1.75 and 2.85 mm diameters and many colors, though Tan 2.85 mm is a different feedstock diameter.
- Manufacturer troubleshooting guide with enclosure, PEI or glue, leveling at ABS temperature, fan-off starts and 5°C nozzle increments.
- Downloadable original TDS and SDS available from the product page, exposing the documented conflicts.
- Some forum owners report good experiences with MatterHackers as a US supplier, though these are sparse and not exact-Tan testing.
- ABS postprocessing options include sanding and solvent welding for compatible parts.
Weaknesses
- Exact SKU unavailable despite a retained $22.99 price, with no verified US checkout or stock date.
- Official documents conflict: ±0.03 vs ±0.05 mm diameter, 1.25 vs 1.04 vs 1.03 g/cm³ density, 220–240 vs 220–260°C nozzle, 80–100 vs 90–110°C bed, and flexural rows that appear transposed.
- ABS warping, lifting and splitting in cool or open printers; a general ABS demonstration bent a spring-steel build plate despite good adhesion.
- A 2019 owner reported poor raft adhesion on unspecified MatterHackers ABS with an uncalibrated diameter estimate; not Tan-specific.
- Emissions: EPA and NIOSH document VOCs and ultrafine particles from FDM printing; the SDS recommends local exhaust; no Tan-specific measurements exist.
- No verified exact-Tan defect frequencies, moisture on arrival, tangle rate or spool replacement rate.
Verified specifications
| Identity | tan ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene), 1.75 mm nominal, 1 kg net, MatterHackers MH Build Series, product number M-X68-49W3, older store URL ending /sk/MX6849W3. |
|---|---|

| Reel dimensions | approximately 200 mm outer diameter, 50 mm inner hub, 65 mm overall spool width. |
| Extruder temperature | product page 230 ±10°C (220–240°C); TDS 220–260°C; overlap 220–240°C. |
| Heated bed | product page 90 ±10°C (80–100°C); TDS 90–110°C; overlap 90–100°C; the maker’s ABS guide recommends 110°C for stubborn adhesion. |
| Print speed | guide about 50 mm/s; TDS 30–100 mm/s. |
| Build surfaces | TDS lists glass with glue, BuildTak, PEI and Garolite; the guide recommends PEI or prepared glass. |
| Mechanical data (TDS) | tensile strength at yield 43 MPa, break elongation 22%, notched Izod impact 19 kJ/m²; flexural modulus 66 MPa and flexural strength 2348 MPa appear possibly transposed. |
| SDS composition | more than 98% ABS copolymer, additives at most 2%; decomposition temperature 250°C. |
| Availability | product page says “Sorry, this product is currently unavailable” with a retained $22.99 list price and a Notify Me interface; no verified US reseller for M-X68-49W3 was found. |
| Price | retained list $22.99, with an “As low as $23.51” annotation that is higher than the list price; Tan 2.85 mm (M-A84-QSWT) at $27.99. |
| Alternatives | Black MH Build 1.75 mm 1 kg at $19.99 with a possible $14.99 bulk tier; ELEGOO ABS at $18.99; Polymaker PolyLite ABS at $18.99 but sold out/backordered; PRO Series ABS at $52.00. |

| Support | support@matterhackers.com, +1 (800) 613-4290. |
| Good-buy target (editorial) | $18 or less delivered for a new, correctly labeled spool with full return eligibility. |
Full research notes and sources
Which model this is
This page covers Tan MH Build Series ABS in 1.75 mm, 1 kg, product number M-X68-49W3, older URL /sk/MX6849W3. It is not the Tan 2.85 mm spool (M-A84-QSWT), not PRO Series ABS, and not a PLA, PETG or ASA product in tan. The page advertises durable high-temperature and chemically resistant parts but provides no quantified Tan chemical compatibility chart.
Documentation conflicts
The manufacturer’s own documents disagree on core values. The page says ±0.03 mm where the TDS says ±0.05 mm. The page says 1.25 g/cm³ where the TDS says 1.04 and the SDS 1.03. Nozzle and bed ranges overlap only at 220–240°C and 90–100°C respectively. The TDS flexural modulus and strength rows read 66 and 2348 MPa in seemingly reversed places. The SDS decomposition temperature of 250°C sits inside the TDS’s 260°C high-end print guidance. These are confirmed source disagreements, not measured deviations on a delivered roll, so do not use the claimed values for certification-grade design without written clarification.
Print setup and temperatures
ABS needs an enclosed, heated build environment. Use the overlapping ranges as starting points: 220–240°C nozzle and 90–100°C bed, with 110°C for stubborn adhesion if the plate is rated for it. Keep part cooling off for initial tests, level the bed at working temperature, use PEI or prepared glass with appropriate adhesive, and tune in 5°C increments. Verify the bed surface and any magnetic sheet can handle the temperature. Ventilate independently of maintaining chamber warmth.
Warping and emissions
ABS shrinkage causes edge lift, cracking and layer splitting, especially on large parts and in cool or drafty printers. A general April 2026 demonstration showed a large ABS print bending a flexible build plate despite good adhesion, underscoring that chamber conditions can matter more than added glue. That demonstration did not use a confirmed Tan MH Build spool. EPA and NIOSH document ultrafine particles and VOCs from molten filament including ABS, and the SDS recommends local exhaust ventilation. A GHS label not being required for the solid stored filament does not prove heated extrusion air is safe to breathe. Actual emissions for this Tan color at 230°C were not measured.
Cost and buying guidance
Retained list price of $22.99 for 1 kg, with an “As low as $23.51” annotation that is higher and not a verified discount. At $22.99/kg, 100 g of nominal raw filament costs $2.30 and 250 g costs $5.75, before scrap, supports, freight and tax. Three kg per year at that rate totals $68.97 and twelve kg totals $275.88, assuming continuous availability that is not presently met. Black MH Build at $19.99, ELEGOO at $18.99 and Polymaker at $18.99 (sold out) are different colors or formulas. PRO Series at $52.00 is a separate higher-tier product with a tighter claimed tolerance, not evidence of equal strength or color. A good-buy target is $18 or less delivered for a correctly labeled spool with full return eligibility; at $19–$24 delivered it is reasonable if Tan is needed; above $25–$30, compare alternatives or verify genuine stock and return terms.
Returns and support
The August 2025 policy allows 30 days from receipt for eligible goods, including faulty product exchanges, with a 15% restocking fee on non-defective filament and buyer-paid return shipping, an RMA, and 7–10 business days to process. Clearance items are final sale and excluded from the 30-day terms; some nearby MH Build colors show clearance metadata, so confirm in writing the status of M-X68-49W3 before relying on returns. The older 2012 warranty page offers one month for printed parts and motors and otherwise as-is, and does not document a material warranty for this spool. A March 2022 buyer reported stalled shipping and a poor PRO Flex spool, while a July 2026 respondent praised support; these are unverified single-person reports on different products.
