Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A professional 36V (two 18V LXT battery) top-handle sidewinder with a brushless motor, magnesium construction and a 3-year lithium-ion warranty. Check your battery situation before buying: it will not run on a single 18V pack, and the bare tool ships without batteries, charger or rafter hook.

Strengths

  • Brushless motor with Automatic Speed Change keeps cut speed up in dense or wet lumber.
  • Magnesium base, guard and cover hold the weight at about 10 lb with batteries.
  • Electric brake, LED lamp, cutline blower, tether notch and a dust-extraction attachment are all fitted.
  • Published parts breakdown and a 3-year lithium-ion warranty support long-term service.
  • The 4-battery kit was called strong value because two extra 5.0 Ah packs were effectively included at no premium over the 2-battery kit.

Weaknesses

  • Bare tool ships without batteries, charger or rafter hook, so budget for those if you are not already on Makita 18V LXT.
  • Needs two 18V batteries to run; if one pack dies mid-cut the saw stops until the dead battery is replaced.
  • Rafter hook is not included (optional accessory 199386-8).
  • Weight figures disagree between sources, so treat the number as roughly 10 lb with batteries rather than a single precise figure.
  • Runtime claims are manufacturer internal testing, not independently measured.
  • No instrumented lab test or long-term durability data was found.

Power and cutting performance

The brushless motor spins a 7-1/4 in blade at 6,000 RPM with 2-5/8 in of cut capacity at 90° and bevel capacity to 56° with positive stops at 22.5°, 45° and 56°. Tools in Action reported corded-like performance on 2x4, 2x12 and backing, with the saw staying controllable despite weighing about 10 lb with batteries. Automatic Speed Change adjusts torque under load, and the electric blade brake stops the blade after the trigger is released; the manual notes the brake is not a substitute for the blade guard.

Battery system and runtime

The saw needs two 18V LXT batteries for 36V operation and will not run on one. Makita claims up to 610 crosscuts in 2x4 SPF and 320 crosscuts in 2x10 SPF with two 5.0 Ah batteries, but those figures are manufacturer internal testing, not independent measurement. A dual-port Rapid Optimum Charger can fully charge two 5.0 Ah batteries in about 45 minutes. If one pack dies mid-job it must be replaced before cutting resumes. The AWS wireless auto-start feature belongs to the separate XSH07 variant, not the XSH06Z.

Ergonomics and build

Construction is die-cast magnesium for the base, blade guard and blade cover. The saw is 13-1/2 in long. Soft start, an LED lamp, a cutline blower and a dust-extraction attachment (included) round out the feature set. A tether notch is built in, but the rafter hook is an optional accessory (199386-8).

Repairs, parts and warranty

Makita lithium-ion tools carry a 3-year limited warranty against defects in workmanship or materials from the date of original purchase, plus a 30-day return/replacement guarantee, with exclusions for abuse or misuse, normal wear and non-genuine batteries. A published parts breakdown lists controller, stator, rotor assembly, bearings, gears, switches, LED circuit, motor housing, base, blade case and flanges, indicating a service-parts channel. Repairs should go to Makita authorized or factory service centers using genuine parts. The manual advises keeping sawdust cleared from the lower guard and hub and having the tool serviced if the blade does not stop quickly after trigger release, since the blade brake is not a substitute for the guard.

Which model this is

This page covers the bare-tool Makita XSH06Z, model XSH06, UPC 088381-869119. Sibling variants on the same manufacturer page are the XSH06PT kit (two 5.0 Ah batteries and a dual-port charger) and the XSH06PT1 kit (four 5.0 Ah batteries); the AWS-enabled sibling is the XSH07. Do not confuse it with the rear-handle XSR01, the older XSH01, the compact sub-compact saw, or the 40V max XGT GSH01. The product identifier on the Amazon catalog is ASIN B07GZFBKB5.

Is it worth it?

2019 review pricing put the bare tool at $199, the 2-battery kit at $339 and the 4-battery kit at $349 as of 2019-01-10, with one reviewer citing about $350 at Home Depot for the 4-battery kit. The 4-battery kit was singled out as strong value because two extra 5.0 Ah packs were effectively included at no premium over the 2-battery kit. Value is strongest for buyers already on Makita 18V LXT who can find the bare tool near those historical levels or a kit with multiple 5.0 Ah batteries; no verified 2026 retail price was found, so compare the same-class Milwaukee and DeWalt options and your existing battery ecosystem before buying.
