Summary

Makita’s highest-torque 18V LXT hammer driver-drill, rated to 1,250 in-lbs in a 7-inch body that is 14% shorter than the drill it replaced.

Strengths

  • The most torque in Makita’s 18V LXT drill line, at 1,250 in-lbs.
  • A 7-inch body, 14% shorter than the XPH07 it replaced.
  • Two speeds and up to 31,500 BPM in hammer mode.
  • An all-metal self-ratcheting 1/2-inch chuck for grip and durability.
  • XPT dust-and-water sealing for jobsite use.
  • Runs on the large 18V LXT battery ecosystem.

Weaknesses

  • A bare tool: no battery or charger in the box.
  • Bulky in tight spots and top-heavy with 5.0Ah packs during overhead work.
  • Only two speeds and no anti-kickback electronics, unlike the 40V XGT models.
  • More vibration in hammer mode than standard drilling.
  • No instrumented independent torque test of this exact model was found.

Torque and speed

Makita rates the XPH14Z at 1,250 in-lbs, the top figure in the 18V LXT drill line-up, with 0-550 and 0-2,100 RPM and 0-8,250 or 0-31,500 blows a minute in hammer mode. It arrived in 2021 as the successor to the XPH07 in a body 14% shorter and centered on large hole saws, augers and heavy fastening. The 18V LXT flagship still trails the newer 40V XGT GPH03, which is rated at 1,590 in-lbs and adds a third speed; the XPH14Z has no anti-kickback electronics.

In the hand

The tradeoffs it found are bulk in tight spots, top-heaviness with full-size batteries overhead, and more vibration in hammer mode. Nobody has published an instrumented torque, RPM or BPM measurement for the XPH14Z, so the manufacturer figure is the only one on the table.

Bare tool and batteries

The XPH14Z ships with no battery or charger, which is the whole buying decision. If you already own Makita 18V LXT packs, it is the platform’s maximum-torque drill. If you do not, add the cost of a charger and batteries, or buy the XPH14T kit with two 5.0Ah batteries, a rapid charger, a side handle and a bag. The tool itself needs no other consumables beyond bits and the hole saws and augers its 3-inch wood and 5/8-inch masonry capacity allows.

Is it worth it?

RankMyTool lists the XPH14 near $175 and WeBuyItForLife lists the XPH14Z at $178.99; Review Streets puts the usual range at $129-$229 depending on retailer and configuration. At that price it makes sense for existing LXT owners who need the torque for remodeling, installs and light masonry. For occasional household work it is overkill, and the lighter XPH12 (530 in-lbs, 3.6 lbs) is easier in tight spaces and overhead. Buyers starting fresh should price the whole kit against the 20V MAX and M18 platforms.

Which model this is

This page covers the Makita XPH14Z, the bare-tool 18V LXT 1/2-inch hammer driver-drill. Do not merge it with the compact XPH12, the non-hammer XFD14, or the 40V XGT GPH03. The kit version is the XPH14T. The listing ASIN is B08VN5TKVR.
