Summary

The XDT20T is the kit form of Makita’s 18V LXT brushless 4-speed impact driver: 1,590 in-lbs of torque in a 4.5-inch head, with two 5.0Ah batteries, a rapid charger and a bag. Check the control layout before you buy — the rear-mounted speed selector is the real change over the identically specced XDT19.

Strengths

  • 1,590 in-lbs and 3,600 RPM in a 4.5-inch head — compact enough for tight cabinets and overhead work.
  • The rear-mounted speed selector changes modes one-handed, without shifting your grip.
  • Assist Mode, two Tightening Modes and reverse auto-stop cover self-drilling screws and stop over-loosening.
  • The 360-degree LED ring with diffuser keeps dark corners lit.
  • The kit ships with two 5.0Ah batteries, the DC18RC rapid charger and a bag — a full starter setup.

Weaknesses

  • One r/Makita user reported the rubber overmolding peeling after a month of use on the XDT20Z — a single report, not a confirmed defect.
  • No instrumented lab test exists, and the model is too new for long-term reliability data.
  • XPT dust and water resistance is a proprietary Makita claim, not an IEC-certified IP rating.
  • There is no third-party parts ecosystem to rival DeWalt or Milwaukee.

Power and four-speed control

Four modes span 0–1,100 to 0–3,600 RPM and 0–1,000 to 0–3,800 IPM. Quick-Shift Mode uses electronic controls to balance speed and torque. Assist Mode drives at low speed until tightening begins, cutting cam-out and cross-threading; two Tightening Modes handle self-drilling screws in thick or thin gauge metal; reverse auto-stop halts the tool once a fastener is adequately loose. Nobody has published measured torque curves or speed-under-load data, so treat these numbers as Makita’s, not lab-verified.

Size, lighting and small details

At 4.5 inches of head length and 3.3 lbs with the kitted battery, the XDT20T fits cabinets and framing cavities where bulkier Pro-grade drivers won’t. The 360-degree LED ring with diffuser lights the fastener instead of just the bit. The one-touch hex chuck rides on dual ball bearings to reduce wobble, and a two-position belt hook is standard. Makita’s XPT construction targets dust and water, but it is not an IEC IP rating.

Kit, warranty and service

The kit bundles the XDT20Z with two BL1850B 5.0Ah batteries, the DC18RC Rapid Optimum Charger and a tool bag. The US warranty runs three years on tool, battery and charger. Makita’s Direct Repair program covers free FedEx shipping to factory service centers, with 8,400+ authorized drop-off locations in the continental US; out-of-warranty repairs need your authorization and a cost estimate first. Makita says it services tools even when discontinued, and the parts breakdown is on the product page.

Is it worth it?

The kit lists at $399 from Makita’s own pricing; the bare tool lists at $234, and Tool Box Buzz listed the bare tool at $144 in December 2024. At $399, the kit competes with Pro-grade 18V kits from DeWalt and Milwaukee on features. Buyers already in the LXT ecosystem get the most value, since the batteries carry over. If you need more torque, the newer XDT21 reaches 1,860 in-lbs and the 40V XGT GDT01 reaches 1,950 in-lbs.

Which model this is

This page covers the XDT20T kit — the XDT20Z bare tool plus two 5.0Ah batteries, a DC18RC charger and a bag — released in November 2024 as the 20th iteration of Makita’s 18V LXT impact driver line. Do not confuse it with the XDT19 (same specs, front-mounted selector), the XDT21 (2026, 1,860 in-lbs) or the 40V XGT GDT01.
