Makita XDT13Z: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-18
Summary
The XDT13Z is a single-speed 18V LXT brushless impact driver sold as a bare tool, so the battery and charger are extra. Owners most often report an intermittent trigger after years of use and a sticky 1/4-inch hex collet, and out-of-warranty repairs can approach the tool’s price because the original controller is no longer available. Running costs are small — no subscription, no filter or brush changes, impact bits as needed, and roughly $1.35 a year in electricity for a light user — and at $159 from Home Depot, Acme Tools and Tool Nut in October 2026 it is fair only for someone who already owns LXT packs.
Common problems and fixes
- Intermittent or weak trigger response — an owner of a longtime Makita impact driver (model not confirmed as an XDT13Z) reported sometimes getting full power and sometimes very weak response; other Makita tools ran normally on the same batteries, pointing at the trigger switch. Confirm with a known-good charged battery, then replace the genuine switch 143975-1, $36.26 at eReplacementParts in October 2026; Makita’s three-year limited warranty runs from the original purchase date. [7][18]
- Sticky collet that traps or refuses to release bits — reported on LXT impact drivers (exact model not identified); keep the chuck clean and inspect the collet sleeve 326068-1, ring spring 231951-8 and compression spring 233005-7, all orderable from eReplacementParts. Disconnect the battery before inspection and do not pound a stuck bit; no model-specific failure rate is known. [8][18]
- Tool stops under load without failing — star-marked packs stop the tool on overload, overheating or excessive discharge; cool the tool and battery, reduce the load and recharge before assuming a failed motor. [2]
- Loud operation — measured 97 dBA while driving ledger screws, near the worst in TechGearLab’s 2022 test group; use hearing protection for sustained work. [6]
- Small screws overdrive or strip — with one trigger range and no electronic low-speed mode, delicate fasteners depend entirely on trigger control; practice on scrap or use an ordinary clutch drill for precision work. [1][6]
- Repairs can approach the tool’s price — the original controller 620556-3 is listed as no longer available, an alternate 620J74-1 is around $69.16 and out of stock at another seller, and a rotor ($34.05), stator ($17.55) and switch ($36.26) add up fast; expensive repairs may not beat a new kit. [18][19]
Parts and consumables
- Collet bit sleeve 326068-1 — $6.40 at PartSelect, $6.34 at eReplacementParts, $5.95 at Encompass, all October 2026 listings; replace when bent, badly worn or no longer securing bits; no replacement interval. [20][18][21]
- Collet springs 231951-8 and 233005-7 — ring spring $6.16 in stock; compression spring $6.32 as a special order with a minimum of 2, at eReplacementParts; they control sleeve and bit retention; replace on damage or loss, not on a schedule. [18]
- Switch complete 143975-1 — $36.26 in stock at eReplacementParts; PowerToolRepair lists it at $17.33 but out of stock; eliminate battery and selector problems first. [18][19]
- Rotor 619404-1 and stator 629224-5 — $34.05 and $17.55 in stock at eReplacementParts; repair parts, not periodic wear items. [18]
- Impact-drive anvil 326563-1 — $14.95 in stock at Encompass, $9.55 out of stock at PowerToolRepair; inspect if hex, hammer or impact operation looks worn. [21][19]
- Hammer case complete 143957-3 — $26.04 in stock at eReplacementParts; the factory-named internal hammer 326564-9 lists at $8.05 out of stock at PowerToolRepair. [18][19]
- Belt hook 346449-3 — $6.20 special order at eReplacementParts; Home Depot’s repair-parts search lists it as no longer available. [18][22]
- LED circuit 620557-1 and direction lever 455053-8 — $16.52 and $6.16 in stock at eReplacementParts; replacements for breakage. [18]
- BL1830B 3.0Ah battery — $129 at Home Depot in October 2026; not included with the bare tool; replace on genuine failure or declining capacity, with no fixed yearly renewal. [16]
- DC18RC rapid charger — $145.99 at Home Depot in October 2026; not included; the $179 XDT131 kit with battery, charger and bag undercuts buying them separately. [17][12]
- Impact-rated 1/4-inch hex bits, socket adapters and nut setters — the main routine wear item; replace when tips round, slip or crack; Acme Tools bundled a 60-piece Impact XPS bit set with qualifying XDT13Z purchases through October 31, 2026 as a promotion. [10]
Yearly running cost
There is no subscription, no proprietary cartridge or filter, and the brushless motor needs no brush purchases. Impact bits are the main consumable and there is no universal annual figure — the cost depends on screw material, quantity and technique. For electricity, one 18V x 3Ah pack stores about 54 Wh; 100 full charge cycles a year is 5.4 kWh, roughly $1.35 at $0.25/kWh before charger losses — an illustrative model, not a measured bill, and real wall energy is higher because of charger losses. Out-of-warranty repairs are conditional rather than annual: a switch runs $36.26 in parts before labor, a collet sleeve $6-7.
When it is a good buy
In October 2026 the bare XDT13Z listed at $159 at Home Depot, Acme Tools and Tool Nut. The XDT131 kit — same driver plus a 3.0Ah battery, charger and bag — listed at $179 at Home Depot; the three-speed Quick-Shift XDT14Z at $169; the brushed XDT11Z at $129; the four-speed XDT20Z at $249 in one Home Depot listing, with some snapshots at $202. As a rough guide, under $100 new from an authorized seller is an especially good buy, $100-129 is reasonable for an owner with LXT packs, and $130-149 is fair only if the single-speed setup is what you want. At $159, buy the $179 kit if you need a battery and charger, or the $169 XDT14Z if you already have them; above $170 for the bare tool the XDT14Z normally makes more sense.
