Makita BO5041K: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-19
Summary
The BO5041K is a corded 5-inch random orbit sander whose most repeated problem is the dust system: the cloth dust bag attachment eventually comes apart and the vacuum port fits 35 mm “Euro” hoses loosely. Its only routine consumable is standard 5-inch 8-hole hook-and-loop discs, so running costs stay low. It is a fair buy at the $129 tool-only and $149 kit prices seen in October 2026, and the best value has historically been below about $100 used or reconditioned.
Common problems and fixes
- Dust bag attachment fails — owners report the cloth dust bag’s fitting “finally came apart”, and a 2017 owner of a reconditioned BO5041 called the sander “rugged, aside from the dust bag bit”. Replacement bags come through Makita’s parts network, and a one-year warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. [1][5][15][16]
- Vacuum port fits 35 mm hoses loosely — the 2014 Journal of Light Construction multi-brand test rated vacuum capture only “Fair to Good” because a 35 mm “Euro” hose “fits loosely over the skinny dust port”; expect an adapter and some slop in the fit. [4]
- Front handle divides owners — the rotatable handle can be removed without tools; the 2014 test praised its reach in corners, but a LumberJocks owner said it “gets in the way for woodworking” and took it off. [4][6]
- The cord is a nuisance — one 2024 r/MilwaukeeTool owner who otherwise loved the sander named the cord as his only gripe. [7]
- One-year warranty is short for the class — Makita gives a 30-day guarantee and a one-year limited warranty, against three years plus a 90-day guarantee on the closest DeWalt DWE6423 class. [8][16]
- Long life, but not immortal — one owner reported his unit “finally gave up” after roughly seven years of heavy use, then re-bought despite a $50 price increase. [6][7]
Parts and consumables
- Abrasive discs, 5" (125 mm), 8-hole hook-and-loop — sold separately and widely compatible, the main consumable, replaced as the grit wears out. [1][2][3]
- Dust bag (166078-4) — the part owners report failing; Makita lists it as a separate part number and OEM retailers stock it. [1][15]
- Dust nozzle (416063-0) and the built-in vacuum port adapter — documented accessories, replaced if lost or damaged. [1][3]
- Carbon brushes — the manual sends inspection and replacement to Makita Authorized Service Centers using Makita parts, so this is not owner-serviceable. [3]
Parts are identified by model through Makita’s published parts breakdown, and OEM parts are stocked by retailers such as PartSelect; no model-specific part prices were found. [3][15]
Yearly running cost
Not enough data for a firm yearly figure. There are no mandatory consumables or subscriptions: standard 5-inch 8-hole discs are sold separately and widely compatible, and the only other recurring purchases are replacement dust bags and the occasional nozzle. Repairs and carbon-brush service go to Makita Authorized Service Centers, and no model-specific part prices were found to compute an annual amount. [1][3][15]
When it is a good buy
- $129 for the tool-only BO5041 (Home Depot, October 2026) and $149 for the BO5041K kit (Home Depot, Toolup and Burns Tools, October 2026) are fair-to-good: the kit competes with the DeWalt DWE6423 class on variable speed and handle adjustability but gives up two years of warranty. [8][9][10][11][12]
- Below about $100 used or reconditioned is the historical sweet spot: owners paid about $70 for a factory-reconditioned BO5041 in 2017 and $80 for a new one in 2019, both reporting years of problem-free use. [5][6]
- $150 and up is weak unless the 4,000 OPM low end and Makita’s service channel are specifically needed. [13][14]
- DeWalt DWE6423 is the better choice if you want a three-year warranty with a 90-day guarantee. [8]
- Makita BO5030K (single-speed) is the better choice if you never use the low end; Popular Mechanics’ 2026 guide picks it Best Overall. [13]
- Makita’s 18V cordless orbital sander is the better choice if you want to drop the cord; BobVila’s 2026 guide leads with it. [14]
