Summary

A corded 5-inch variable-speed random orbit sander for finish work, sold as a kit with a plastic case and a dust bag. Check dust collection before you buy: one direct comparison lists no vacuum port, and owner feedback says the rear bag may not attach reliably.

Strengths

  • Light and compact at 2.9 lbs, with a rubberized palm grip owners praise for one-handed work.
  • Low vibration for the class at 4.0 m/s².
  • The 4,000-12,000 OPM dial matches speed to the material.
  • Timber Frame HQ credits the three-ball-bearing construction as a plus for tool life.
  • Pad brake and a dust-sealed switch.
  • Ships with a dust bag and a plastic case, and carries a 1-year limited warranty.

Weaknesses

  • Dust collection is the weak point: Timber Frame HQ’s comparison lists no vacuum port, and owner feedback says the rear bag may not attach reliably.
  • The dust bag is small and fills quickly.
  • Abrasive discs are sold separately.
  • No independent instrumented test of the exact BO5031K exists.
  • Vacuum hookup is unconfirmed: Makita’s flyer claims it, the comparison table disagrees.

Dust collection

The BO5031K pulls dust through the pad into a rear fabric bag. In Timber Frame HQ’s direct comparison with the Bosch ROS20VSC, the Makita BO5041K and the DeWalt DWE6421K, the BO5031K is listed with no vacuum port, and its owner negatives “tend to point to the dust collection bag. It may not always attach in a reliable fashion.” The Best Home Tools comparison adds that the bag is small and fills quickly. Makita’s own flyer says the tool connects to Makita vacuum cleaners without an adapter, so the sources do not agree. If you sand indoors or want a shop-vac hookup, confirm this before buying.

Comfort and control

Owners consistently praise the compact size, the light weight and the rubberized palm grip, and the sander runs one-handed. Makita rates vibration at 4.0 m/s² and noise at 80 dB(A) sound pressure. The variable-speed dial covers 4,000-12,000 OPM, so you can drop the speed for finish work, and the pad brake stops the disc when you let go. The switch is dust-sealed, and Timber Frame HQ credits the three-ball-bearing construction as a plus for tool life and power.

Repairs, parts and running costs

Makita backs the tool with a 1-year limited warranty and publishes a parts breakdown for the BO5031K/BO5031, so parts-level service is possible. Replacement dust bags, paper filters, dust boxes, vacuum hoses and 5-inch 8-hole discs are sold as accessories. The running cost is abrasive: discs are sold separately and a shop user will go through them. Nobody has published a repair or failure rate for this model, so treat long-term reliability as unknown rather than proven.

Is it worth it?

Master Wholesale lists the kit at $139.00. At that money it is a light, low-vibration variable-speed sander with a ball-bearing drive, and the case and bag are in the box. What it is not is the class leader on dust extraction or two-handed control. Bob Vila’s hands-on test of 11 random orbit sanders did not name it among the winners, and Pro Tool Reviews gives its “best for the money” label to the BO5041K, not to this model. If vacuum extraction or a front handle matters, compare the BO5041K or the Bosch ROS20VSC first.

Which model this is

This page covers the BO5031K, the variable-speed kit with case and dust bag. The family around it differs: the BO5030/BO5030K is single-speed, the BO5041/BO5041K is larger with a front handle and a vacuum port, and the BO6030/BO6040 is a 6-inch machine. A third-party UK listing shows 4.5 m/s² vibration and a single 12,000 OPM figure, which conflicts with Makita’s 4.0 m/s² and 4,000-12,000 OPM; treat it as a listing error. The Amazon listing for this sander is ASIN B00G7U2DAM.
